Interview With Lumedoll

Hello! I'm sorry for being so late in the day posting the interview, but I had a lot to get done before taking my time on the computer. So, this month interview is with a non-asian BJD artist, and she is Eva Wilson, from USA, creator of the gorgeous Lumedoll! Here is the interview, in english and spanish. Some pics are owner-photos, used with permission.

Hello! Thanks so much for doing this interview :3
It's a pleasure, thank you.
¡Hola! Muchas gracias por hacer esta entrevista :3
Es un placer, gracias.

I know Lumedoll is an artist-run studio. Where are you from, and how do you started making BJDs?
I live in Florida with my husband and three boys. I've always made dolls in some form since I was a child and never really gave up my love for them even through high school or college. When my children were very small, I started whittling dollhouse sized dolls out of wood in my spare time, and as the kids got older, I began carving larger and larger wooden dolls, some even had ball and socket joints. While researching on the internet for different doll joint designs, I came across resin BJD's from Japan and Korea and I was awestruck. I found that dolls could be more beautiful than I ever imagined. I decided that I wanted to try sculpting instead of woodcarving and reproduce the dolls I made in resin. So through a lot of trial and error, I made my first BJD in 2007, Ain. From there, I kept making one after another, trying to improve my skills, both in sculpting and mold making.

The concept of your dolls is really unique and ethnic. What make you decide to give the dolls this features and characteristics?
Simply put, I love people. I love how special each person is and I wanted to see that in my dolls. I don’t really plan a doll out or have a specific idea before I start sculpting. I usually start with a head shape and just work with the clay until a face emerges. Sometimes this happens very quickly and other times I work with the head for months, a little at a time.

Would you like to introduce us your workspace? How many members Lumedoll has working?
I do all of the work here by myself; everything from the design all the way to taking the packages to the post office. In a way, I feel that each doll, although its a reproduction, still somehow is an original work of art straight from the artists hands. It's a ton of work but over the years I've developed a process to make things go as smoothly as possible. I do the messy work like casting and molding in a section of my garage. Living in Florida, that makes working in the summer my least favorite part of my job, but I try to start before the sun comes up to make it more bearable. Upstairs is my studio room, where I sculpt, paint, and finish dolls. One day I hope to have a separate studio from the house where all of my work can be in one place.

Which is the most popular Lumedoll’s sculpt? And a personal favorite?
I think the 1/3 scale Saiph and Tania dolls were the most popular over the years, but Tyl and Rana (1/4 scale dolls) are gaining on them! I find that unique as Tyl and Rana have similar facial characteristics as Saiph and Tania. I don't know if I have a personal favorite, I love each one of them so much, but right now it might be Rischa. I really like the ¼ scale size. They’re big enough to play with, but small enough to keep in a limited amount of space.

Lumedoll recently released some new resin colours. Want to tell us a little about that?
I developed the Bronze and Ebony formulas some time ago, but since those colors don't fare well with seam sanding, I had to wait until my molding techniques could create very neat seam lines so they could be left intact. The zombie resin was made by accident and one day the idea struck me that this color would make a great skin tone for zombies (or goblins, or witches!), so I perfected the formula and released it. I now have nine resin color options available which I think is fun as that just makes so many more possibilities.

Finally, anything else you want to tell us?
One of the things I enjoy about making BJD's is the sense of sharing creativity with others, sometimes just being the canvas to make something wonderful. I'm always being amazed again and again at the talent I see from the collectors! Other times it's me making that perfect doll for someone and just knowing I've made someone very happy. I'm very grateful to be able to do this.
