Interview with Freakstyle

Hello everybody! Today I have the pleasure to present you the new interview for December. This time, the spotlight is on Frederieke from FreakstyleBJD. As always, all the images are posted with permission, and the interview is both in English and in Spanish.

I always start with a classic question: how did you found about BJDs?
Haha. Well, it’s also a good question: I always like hearing from other people how they got into the hobby.
In my case, it’s Raouken’s fault (from Raouken’s Corsetry). We were classmates and one day she came to school with a type of doll that I had never seen before, but had such an ethereal look. It was her first doll: CP Chiwoo. I asked her a lot of questions about it and of course was taken aback by the price tag (as seems to be common for newbies) and vowed that I would never own one of them, despite Raouken’s hints that I would really love them. Six months later, I got my own first doll.
Seis meses después, me compré mi primera muñeca.

How did you decided to start sculpting? Do you have an artistic background/education?
The desire to sculpt my own doll started that day when I first saw Raouken’s Vasily. It wasn’t so much the wish to own one of these dolls, but the drive to want to make one that surprised me. I didn’t have any sculpting experience. Although we were both studying to become game designers – and so we were in a creative trade – I was really bad at drawing. The only thing I thought I was good at was writing. A completely different trade from sculpting.
Still, that dream of wanting to sculpt a doll got stuck in my brain and I started to look for books about anatomy, tutorials on how to sculpt and spend countless hours picking apart famous sculptures to see how they were made. And when the info started to make sense, I took up the sculpting tools to try for myself.
Puck is the first doll I created. I did make two other heads before him, but they turned out to be too big. His body, though, is the first thing I sculpted. Through creating him, I’ve learned everything I know now, from what the properties of the different clays are, to how to mold and cast. It did take me a few years to complete him though ^^”.
¿Cómo decidiste comenzar a modelar?
Yo no tenía ninguna experiencia modelando.

Also, do you have a workspace to share with us?
Sure! My workplace is just the spare bedroom that I changed into a studio. I live in a two-bedroom apartment, and my studio is situated in the largest of the two bedrooms. What you can’t see in this picture is the residence cat. The chair in the front is his throne, but he was eating his meal at that time.
The black table in the back I’ve only got for a week and I’m SO happy with it. I used to only have the desk and when you’re working on several projects at the same time, there just isn’t enough space. It does get a bit cramped now – when I’m using the modeling stand, I have to move it aside to be able to leave the room – but the increase in workspace absolutely makes up for it.

Your style is really unique, and received many different opinions from the crowd in the hobby. I personally love them because your dolls are so unique! What drove you to this style? Do you have a meta/moto for your BJDs?
Oh, yes, there have been quite a few opinions in this hobby, and not all of them were good. Some people even seem to be quite persistent in telling me that my work ‘sucks’ as if they’re hoping that their effort is going to change something. Fact is that my dolls are not everyone’s cup of tea. And they are different enough to invoke a reaction. I might be a good enough sculptor to be able to make sweet looking girls etc., but I don’t really want to. I’d like my dolls to have character. Character in the face, character in the body. I’m not interested in ‘perfect beauty’; not as a sculptor anyway. It’s those facial characteristics that you don’t see often that inspires me. It is my desire to make beautiful things from what isn’t automatically regarded as beautiful. Like the body that shows skin folds. Or the hooked nose of Eve.
I guess that is why I started making Scylla: my new mermaid WIP. I really love looking at special effects make-up. As a child I watched Star Trek, mainly because I loved to see what the creators came up with next; to see people be transformed into really alien looking beings. I think many of those designs are absolutely gorgeous. And I also believe they might work really well as BJD’s.

Freakstyle Eve, Persephone and Scylla (head only).

I’m curious about your sculpt’s names. How do you choose them?
For my boys, I’m looking at characters from books, tv-shows and movies that fit the persona of the doll. Puck, for instance, is named after Midsummer Night’s Dream.
My 45cm girls are named after famous femme fatales. Salomé was the daughter of Herodias who danced before Herod and asked for John’s head on a plate when he promised her Salomé could have anything she wanted. Eve is also often considered a femme fatale, because through her mankind fell.
Some of the projects I’m working on now, will have names like Mata Hari, Medea, Pandora etc. For my tinies, I’m again looking into legends and mythology. Scylla, the mermaid, is named after the sea monster. Persephone after the Greek goddess.

Do you have a personal collection of dolls?
I do! I’ve been collecting dolls for eight years now, although most have been bought when I was still a student. Most of my dolls are hybrids. I also tend to fall for dolls are difficult to find. This isn’t because I think that they are better or anything; personally I think that there isn’t such a thing as a ‘better’ doll. But I’ve come to realize that when I get a doll that’s readily available, I’m unable to bond with them. The challenge is what makes me want them more, I guess. And if I have to save up for over a year to be able to afford just a head, I know I really want that doll. The dolls I own are:
- Elfdoll K-SS (domuya body)
- Volks Madoka (Dollstown 15y girl body)
- Gomidoll Iru-HS (Dollstown 7y body)
- Volks SwD Lucas
- Volks Williams (Soom Supergem body 2007)
- Esthy Peroth
- IH Kamau
I don’t take a lot of pictures of them, so unfortunately, I only have a few.
- Elfdoll K-SS (domuya body)
- Volks Madoka (Dollstown 15y girl body)
- Gomidoll Iru-HS (Dollstown 7y body)
- Volks SwD Lucas
- Volks Williams (Soom Supergem body 2007)
- Esthy Peroth
- IH Kamau

Sadly, the BJD hobby is suffering a lot from recasted/bootlegged dolls. What is your statement on this regard?
If you’ve been reading my blog on Tumblr, you know that I’m pretty vocal about this topic :). I’ll be frank: I hate recasts. I hate what they do to the community and I hate what they do to the artist. It isn’t even about the money we would lose when one of our dolls gets copied. And let’s be honest, the financial setback is a big problem for any doll company out there. Even the ‘big’ names are really just small and you can see it when you see the pictures of – for instance – Spirit Doll’s ‘shop’ (it is just a redecorated living room).
But money is just money. What really hurts is the contempt that hides in the act of bootlegging, or buying a recast. Some people even justify getting a recast, because they believe artists don’t deserve to make the (whatever little) money they make. That condescension… that disdain for the artist as a person, is a slap in the face.
The good news though, is that apparently it IS possible for artists to fight bootlegs. I don’t know if you’ve read Lillycat’s post, but her attorney was able to pull the sales page of her recasted doll off of aliexpress! That’s a great thing! It proves that selling recasts is illegal, no matter what excuse you have for it. And it also gives us artists hope that there might be a way to fight this theft.

Finally, anything else you want to share with us?
Despite the tension we experience in the community today and despite many of these difficult topics, I do believe that we have a fantastic hobby. Collecting BJD’s and sharing them with fellow enthusiasts is just lovely. That moment when you open the box of your new doll: priceless. There’s nothing like it. I really hope that we can come to terms with the issues that we face, so that we can be a community again. I’d really want our hobby to stay a safe place for all of us who love dolls. But in order to keep it safe, I do think we have to make an effort. All of us. Not just the artists, not just the hobbyists. Higher end collectors, lower end collectors. Sock dress enthusiasts and frilly outfit fans. We all have to put our minds to it. No-one excluded. Because that’s what a community is.

  4. Great interview! Personally none of her dolls have been must-haves for me, but I do respect her as an artist. And I do like how she's so upfront about the recasting debate. It is always good to hear how the artists themselves feel about it.

I personally love how versatile Salomé is, more after seeing the reinascense custom of her (I don't remember the name of her owner).
