Interview with ShadowedForce Aesthetics

Hello!! Here we have a new interview for a new month, and I'm really happy to bring a spotlight on Sam, the face-up artist behind ShadowedForce Aesthetics! It was a pleasure to do this interview and, as always, you can read it both in English and Spanish. Also, all images are used with permission.

Hello! It is a pleasure to interview the artist of Shadowed-Force Aesthetics!
Hello! Thank you for inviting me to do this interview. I’m very excited. ^^
¡Hola!
¡Hola! Gracias por invitarme a hacer la entrevista. Estoy muy entusiasmada ^^

Let’s start as always: How did you found about BJDs?
I was first introduced to the hobby when I was 14 or 15 while browsing DeviantART. I saw these doll photos that looked so magical and wanted to be part of that world too… but then I saw the price tag. That alone made me walk away until my senior year of high school, where I was able to convince my parents to allow me to buy a Volks Dollfie fashion doll and Hujoo Baby to start out with. They were worried about me getting into another hobby, since I was already involved with a lot of things, but agreed that if I liked it I could start saving for a resin BJD of my choice. Well, it stuck all right! My graduation gift to myself was Athena, a Dollzone Annie girl.

And how did you decide to start doing face-ups and taking commissions?
I never liked the idea of sending my own dolls out for faceups, so I used doll customization as my primary creative joy in the hobby. I practiced a bit on my own dolls and offered free faceups to people on Facebook to help get the ball rolling. I found so much joy in helping others make their BJDs into their dream dolls, so I kept up with it and began my own little faceup shop. Something that helped a lot was offering digital mockups with every commission, because it helps cut down on the physical changes to the actual head after the work’s done. I’ve had a lot of customers tell me they enjoy having the option because they can show me exactly what they want without the headache!
¿Cómo decidiste comenzar a hacer maquillajes y tomar comisiones?

Do you have a workspace to share with us? How do you organize your faceup work?
In my college apartment I had a spare bedroom, so I turned it into my doll room! It’s perfect for keeping my dolls safe, doing commissions away from my dining room table, and organizing all of my accessories and diorama pieces. One part of the room is dedicated to doll customization, so I have my own desk and dresser full of supplies for faceups, modifications, wig making, etc. Having a space specifically for this makes everything about commissions and doll work easy and convenient.

Your nickname and shop-name is very interesting! How did you select it?
The name “Shadowed Force” has a very long story. Years ago I had started a graphic design website that offered website layouts for fanfiction sites, along with other stuff that helped others make their own graphics. I needed a name for the website, so my mom and I brainstormed together and came up with Shadowed Force, and it’s just stuck with me ever since. I’ve used it for my usernames all over the place, so if you see it around… it’s probably me.

You have done many face-ups, but do you have a personal favorite? And a most-popular face-up?
My personal favorite faceup would definitely have to be on my Migidoll Cho/Cynical Cho. I find it a little difficult to get faces to match, so I was pretty happy when I finished my boy’s two heads. My pet peeve of faceups are the eyelashes, which is why I’m always looking to improve them. I think this set does pretty well in that area.
Has hecho muchos maquillajes, pero ¿tienes algún favorito personal?

When it comes to the most popular faceup, though, I think it would be a faceup I just did very recently. It was done on a Resinsoul Song for DollAKon and seemed to get a pretty great reaction when I displayed it on my blog. He’s definitely a close second for my favorite, since he was the first doll I ever did modifications on.

You also have a stunning personal BJD collection! Want to share them with us?
Thank you! I have 17 BJDs now (with that number increasing all the time) all of which I’ve done faceups on. I tend to split up my collection into groups based on the characters that go together. I have my “Big 7”, which was my first set of characters ever shelled as BJDs, and “The Neighbors” who are my cul de sac, childhood friends.
I think one of my most developed groups, though, is “Team Prodigy” – but only one out of the three on the team has been started as a BJD so far. My boyfriend and I have developed this group together, so we’re trying to make everything perfect when it comes to their resin selves! Last, but not least, I have my “Independents”, who are just dolls with names and mini-stories that I don’t develop much.

Do you have a favorite brand of BJDs?
My collection spans 10-15 different companies, and I love every company I’ve dealt for different reasons, but I’d definitely have to say that Souldoll is the one I have a soft spot for so far. I really love their sculpts and styling – plus, their customer service is pretty great as well! There have been so many dolls from them that I have a longing for, even if I don’t know what I’d do with them.

Finally, anything else you want to share with us?
I really want to thank everyone who has supported me in the BJD hobby throughout the last few years. I’ve met so many great people, whether it’s been at a meet in person, chatting online about characters, or even the people who have graciously allowed me to paint their dolls. This wonderful community has welcomed me with open arms, and I couldn’t be more grateful for it.
I also just wanted to say that taking a chance and trying new things can definitely change your outlook on the hobby. I wouldn’t be where I am if I didn’t experiment with hybrids, modifications, and other “scary” things of the hobby, so don’t be afraid to get out there and try it! Who knows, you may even find that same spark!
Other than that, I hope to make it to more doll conventions (and conventions in general) soon, so if you ever see me around, please say hello! I will be at DollAKon in Texas this June as a guest, so I’m very excited for that.
