DoA Triathlon 2015 ~ Challenge 1: Wig

At the beginning of August I was stalking DoA, as usual, and realized that the Events sub-forum was up. I have completely forgotten about DoA's anniversary when I found the first challenge of the Triathlon. I was reading and commented if I should participate or not on Twitter and to my hubby, and since I got too many enabler answers... well, I ended up participating!

I'm going to do a series of three posts, each of them showcasing one challenge. Since this year it wasn't necessary to keep a "topic" on each entry, all of mine are really different, and I wanted to share them individually... plus, I took lots of pics, and even made a video for each entry! So please be kind to me, and here we go to the post!

Challenge 1: Big Hair

The idea for this challenge was to make a wig using non-conventional materials. There was no limit on the cost of the materials, and we had only one week to prepare the wig. You can read the full challenge description through this screenshot. Because I didn't got the idea of taking screenshots, I have nothing regarding the voting categories for this challenge, sadly.

Anyways, I used Coco for this, and here is my entry:

I used the following materials to make the wig: wool fleece (the purple and lilac), golden lurex thread, boucle wool, satin laces to make the roses (they are not purchased, but handmade), nylon fabric for the head-cap and silver wire. My tools were scissors, fabric glue and brushes. Plastic bags to cover Coco while I did the wig, too.

I had to re-do the wigcap once, and the buns twice because my ideas weren't working. I originally thought on making a wig with braids, but after the topic of "Up to Eleven", and push creativity, I decided to change it. That was the first time re-doing the buns.

I was trying to make two buns, one on top of the other, but I wasn't being able to make them hold together while holding the wires, so I rip them apart to recover the wires, and did only one bun, that is how the wig finally ended up looking.

Despise how they look, those are actually three braids, but one of them is 1 meter long, and is crossed around the bun to help it stay in place. The "strips" that she has at the sides of her head were actually locks! I fixed them with... that thing used to iron clothing (after all is only wool), but they barely made it in lock shape for the original pics I took for the Triathlon, least of all for when I took better pictures =S

I don't know if it can be seen from the above pic, but the braids are not attached on the wires, only hold in there, so they can be removed and let loose.

Anyways, I also prepared a video about the wig. It is not much, it is very short and has four photos and some short footage of the wig. Please be kind because this is my very first video and I was mostly discovering what the camera and the software I used could do. I promise better videos for the next entries.

After watching the wig from the distance, the hubby told me that the wires sort of resemble a butterfly wings. I like the idea of it, to be honest! I wanted to use that for my shoes, but I wasn't able... but that is the story for the next post!

In the meantime, thank you to all of those who told me that they recognized my dolls! It was nice to hear :D Did anyone of you participated this year or a past year on DoA's Anniversary Events?

  3. I'm too lazy to participant in such events, though I wish I gave a try to the wig at least Dx
Your entry was fabulous and reminded me of big and complex chinese designs :) which I like a lot!
I love the last picture of Coco, it's an angle I don't see you do much and it accentuates her pretty face a lot :)

    1. Thank you! But the challenges already ended. During DoA's Anniversary events one is not allowed to share the entries while the contest is in march. This is to prevent people asking for votes and other things.

I finished #16 on the Triathlon, but I'm happy with what I did! I hope I can do better on future years! :D

  7. Wow! How great idea is to put in the wires to support the wig, I really like that the braids are not attatched to the wires. She looks great, like some mystery fairy priestess.

    1. Thank you!!! Yes, I love the fact that the braids are movable!
The bad thing is that I don't know how to store the wig xD
