Coco's Kimono

I was thinking on titling this post "Coco's new dress and the failed bokeh" or "How pretty a dress turned out is directly proportional to how ugly the pictures turn up", but I finally decided on something less pessimistic xD

The thing is that I tried like five backgrounds types, and all of the looked ugly. The lights net was too small to make bigger bokeh for Coco's sizes, considering that I'm using a kit lens. I was getting really angry and frustrated with myself, then hubby came, made a few silly things, and there I was again on a happy mood, while we figured out a background for the pictures xD

If you follow me on Instagram you have probably seen a few pics of the dress. I must say that so far I love this dress, even if I dislike a couple things (like how the obi's ribbon attaches in the back, that dang thing keep falling!). Anyways, here is a pic, and there will be more (and more anecdotes) under the cut!

First of all, I wanted to make similar outfits for all my dolls, hence why the tinies got Yukatas, and Coco got a fancy silk kimono xD I mainly wanted red and golden as they are xmas colors. I must confess that I did cheat on the outfit: it is not the classical square shape, but a more fitted one (I hate wrinkles), the obi snaps on the back and then the ribbon is hooked on it, and finally, the inner white dress does not have sleeves (Instagram pic here)! Shame on me!

One of the first anecdotes, is that after doing the white inner dress, I decided that I did not want to make any visible seam, and most of all on the sleeves (see that they are open in the back, with two contrasting colors). I brainstormed hours how could I make this, and then sewing turned out to be a fold-sew-fold-back feat, that took me a lot of time to finish. Then, I applied this new technique to the obi too, and I think it looks really nice!

I did my research for this! I changed the original design several times. I knew I wanted it to be short (I can't fight Coco's style), but attempted to do the neckline showing the nape of the neck, taking advantage on the gorgeous sculpting details of the Withdoll body. I also attempted a pre-tied obi; if I understood correctly, the one I did is inspired on the "Fukura Suzume Musubi".

Then, I researched the obi-age and obi-jime. I found this forum with ideas, but I ended up what the fabric wanted to be made, hahaha! And the obi-jime (the white cord) is fake, because it is also tied (in a easy-to-untie way) in the back, but it is covered by the obi ribbon. Shame on me! I told you that I did cheat on this dress.

Then it came the "I need to make the headpiece" haste, when I had just finished the obi-jime... yesterday, at like 7pm. Add that like an hour attempting to do something with Coco's hair. Then I do the headpiece with a nice hook, and there was no way I could attach that and keep it on her hair. So I "re-purposed" a tiny buckle I once got from ForMyDoll, removed the original decoration, glued the one I did... and waited until today. I do think it looks very nice! :D That flower looks so pretty on Coco <3

So, this is it! Oh, and before I forget! The net of light I got for this pic is of such bad quality, that the color on the spotlights started to wear off xD Nevermind why it costed around $13, hahaha!!!

Anyways, hope you are all doing great!!! Are you doing anything xmas-related with your dolls?

Las fotos me gustaron mucho, el juego de los brillos de la red de luces hacen un fondo muy bonito. Tus fotos son geniales. Has hecho un gran trabajo, te felicito.

Also, thank you for that comment about the sleeves and the obi, you made me blush!! I tried my best to not do my normal visible stitch. Now that I learned how, I will always try to hide the stitches!

  5. That is so gorgeous!!! If only Aileen wore something like that I'd love to commission a similar kimono-outfit from you ;__; (The only doll I have that I could justify giving a kimono is my incoming SD girl ;w; ) The pictures turned out great too though! And I love how it is more modern, but still clearly a kimono :D
