Interview with J. Baek (Dollits)

Hello everybody! December is here, and so there is a new interview! This time, the spotlight is on J. Baek, the artist and creator of Dollits; in case you don't know, he worked for a lot of time on Iplehouse, and also on DiM.

As always, the interview is both in English and Spanish, and all images were used with permission. So, without further ado, here is the interview! Update February 2017: Now you can also read this interview in Russian! Thanks to Mifrotvorci for the translation. You can read it here.

Hi there! Thanks for doing the interview!
Hello everyone! I am J Baek from Dollits. My Korean name is JoongHyun Baek. ‘Dollits’ is a Korean Ball Jointed Doll company, mainly offering BJDs that I sculpted.
The name of my company ‘Dollits’ is the shorthand of the expression for ‘doll it is’. I would like to hear people’s own opinions about dolls from Dollits saying “Dollits doll, it's (your opinion)”. Inside the brackets people will put their own adjectives to describe my dolls. For example, “Dollits doll is (great! love! cute! and others).” The adjectives I gave you are an example of the ones I would like to hear. So I’ve always tried my best.
¡Hola!

How did you meet BJDs? How long have you been sculpting dolls?
I started art in my high school and graduated from the Department of Sculpture at the College of Art. I completed a Master's course in order to become an artist because I liked sculpting the human body. However, I found out that, in South Korea, artists who sculpt human body are not happy and are economically poor.
I met BJD for the first time while attending a doll class of Pandora Box (http://www.pandora-box.co.kr) in Korea, 2005. At that time, I didn’t know there were BJD companies in Korea, as I was working in other area. I worked for modelling companies making miniatures, human bodies, working with Styrofoam and clay. And I made mannequins in a mannequin company.
After I worked for many different companies, in 2008 I saw an Iplehouse advertisement to find a new work on the Internet. Since I joined Iplehouse, I had made a lot of characters as a manager of the doll sculpting team. This is a sculpt list that I made for Iplehouse:
  • EID- Luo, Kamau, Bichun, Arvid, Dexter Taregan, Elchanan, Luna, Aurora, Carina.
  • SID- Theo, Felix, Denzel, Barahan, Claude, Audrey, Soo.
  • nYID- Body (Man, Woman), Justin, Emilia, Erica.
  • JID- nJID Boy Body, Joshua, Isar, Benny.
  • BID- Erzulie, Bordy, Aki, Elin
I also helped on the development of other heads and bodies, and I left Iplehouse in Jan 2013. Also I worked as a doll artist in DIM in 2013-4, for 2 years. I did SooHee, Miso, Julia, Youra
And I started Dollits in 2014, and the Dollits website was opened in December 2014. In addition, I have offered doll making classes.

  • EID- Luo, Kamau, Bichun, Arvid, Dexter Taregan, Elchanan, Luna, Aurora, Carina.
  • SID- Theo, Felix, Denzel, Barahan, Claude, Audrey, Soo.
  • nYID- Body (Man, Woman), Justin, Emilia, Erica.
  • JID- nJID Boy Body, Joshua, Isar, Benny.
  • BID- Erzulie, Bordy, Aki, Elin
Hice a SooHee, Miso, Julia y Youra.
Además, he ofrecido clases para aprender a modelar muñecas.

And how did you decide to start your own brand? Do you have any workspace to share with us?
The reason for the establishment of Dollits was to be able to make my own dolls as I desire. And I wanted to have my own brand as well. And then, it started.

Dollits workspace.

Dollits is a young brand, but how many people work with you? Will you walk us through the process to create a new doll?
Dollits is a company that I operate alone. However, the makeup and costume production are left for outsourcing. At the moment, the doll making has been done by one person: myself. But in the future, I think I will be able to have employees if everything goes well.
Doll-making process is like the following: In general, firstly I set the concept, and sculpt the doll, watching pictures I find for the right look. Sometimes I create dolls with my own imagination of course, but making it by imagination only has a limit which the outcomes are likely to have similar faces to each other. That is the reason why I try to obtain an idea by simply looking at photos. To obtain diverse faces like real human beings.
Doll sculpting is done by both 3D work-print and by hand. D.A.D (70cm) body and Rey were produced by 3D design and print. But 3D works need a lot of modifications. Check this please:

Dollits DAD "Rey" Work-In-Progress Gallery

Dollits DAD "Rey", work in progress.

D.K.D (43cm) body and head were completed by hands.

It takes a long time to complete one work. This is because when sculpting by hand, many modifications are needed, and it is a great effort to get a clean and detailed surface that will show enough facial expression and body details. Because of this, I cannot release too many dolls. Now, I have a plan to release more dolls through 3D making process.

Have you planned on adding new bodies, optional parts or genres (male dolls at 1/4 size, and female dolls at 1/3)?
I want to make all sizes.Following is the current size categories of Dollits’ website.
  • D.A.D(Dollits adult doll) 70, 65cm
  • D.Y.D(Dollits Young doll) 65, 60cm
  • D.K.D(Dollits Kid doll) 45, 43ccm
  • D.B.D(Dollits Baby doll) 26cm
  • D.P.D(Dollits Pocket doll) 19, 16cm
I also want to make the other size dolls as well. I started the creation of D.Y.D woman (60cm) and man (65cm). I will be very grateful if you look forward to it.

  • DAD (Dollits Adult Doll): 70 y 65cm
  • DYD (Dollits Young Doll) 65 y 60cm
  • DKD (Dollits Kid Doll) 45 y 43cm
  • DBD (Dollits Baby Doll) 26cm
  • DPD (Dollits Pocket Doll) 19 y 16cm

Among your own sculpts, is there a personal favorite? Why?
They are 'Miso' from Dollits and 'Luo' from Iplehouse. 'Luo' was my first ball jointed doll. Although he had the face of a tough man, customers liked him very much.
And when it comes to Dollits 'Miso', she was a sculpt that received the biggest love from customers since I started to work as a freelancer. While making 'Miso', I worked laughing and smiling all day.

Sadly, the hobby is suffering due to recasts. What is your statement on the matter?
Recasts can bring down the creativity of the sculptor, and also it leads to bankrupt the company. Products of recasts have very bad quality. The reason is because it shrinks in the course of production of the silicon mold and the resin, so its size decreases - In the case of 70 cm doll, 1 cm can be reduced by this recast. Because it uses one mold for a long time, so it often becomes defective. Movement of dolls is also bad because deformation occurs in the joints of BJD. Most of my customers would not buy those recasts. I'm so grateful to them.

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
I hope many people will be glad by my dolls. So, I want to know what kind of dolls you wish to have. Let's meet and talk about it at my Facebook page! I have used this as the main.

Thank you so much for doing the interview! It was a pleasure!
This is the first time I introduce Dollits through an interview. As my English is poor, it took a long time to answer the interview questions. My statements might have been written with wrong words or awkward sentences but I hope your kind understanding. Thank you for reading my interview. I also appreciate Musume for giving me this chance. Thank you all.
