Interview with GaroDoll

Lua and GaroDoll Nautina
Hello everybody! It is time for a new monthly interview, and this month I have invited a very skilled artist: Lua Garo from GaroDoll.

Her previous nickname was Lunita, and she is a Spanish face up artist, who also has a brand of handmade urethane eyes, and she has sculpted her own dolls too, in order to start her own brand (pre-order coming soon!). Her main sales place is Etsy, and she also has presence on several social sites.

As always, they interview is both in English and Spanish (this time it is translated to English), and all images were used with permission. Hope you will love the interview :D

Hello! It is a pleasure to do this interview :D
Hello! The pleasure is mine :D This opportunity makes me really happy. My name is Lua, although I’m sure somebody will remember my old nickname Lunita, and I’m currently active under the nickname Lua Garo. I’m from Madrid (Spain). I focus on professionally customizing BJDs, but I also wok on traditional and 3D sculpting, and in my free time I’m a mercenary illustrator.
¡Hola! Un gusto poder entrevistarte Lua :D
¡Hola!

How did you found about BJDs? Do you have a personal collection?
How did I find BJDs… such memories, I was only a child! It is nice to look how everything started, hahaha. The first time I saw one was on a Expocomic, here in Madrid, when I was 13-14 years old. A girl (her nickname was Grim) was carrying a Dollzone Yuu that immediately caught my attention. I needed to know everything about that doll! I was really ashamed of asking her anything, but when I got home a had a name: ball jointed dolls.
Although I knew almost nothing about BJDs, two or three years later I got my first: a FL MNF Seorin a la carte. To my luck, it came home with an event head Dark Elf Soo, which ended up being my main doll… And she has suffered so many experiments! I still have her, since she is very special to me, because she is the beginning of everything. Now I am were I never imagined to be if I would have been asked when I started at 16 years old.
I do have a personal collection, and I always end up joking with “there is a legend that says that I do also collect BJDs…” hahaha.Truthfully, I cannot say that my collection is small, but I do not have time to finish them and take photos… so nobody sees them, not even me. I have 11 complete BJDs, and several heads. They are almost all taken apart, and at the most they have a faceup. I’m such a terrible owner! Most of them are SD size, I love that, it allows a great range of detail.

You are an artist with many facets, and your portfolio includes face-ups, urethane eyes, and artisanal dolls. What did came first?
Without a doubt the first thing were face ups and mods. I started testing the MiniFee DES head I wrote about before. As everybody I was an amateur and did not had a clue about what I was doing, and of course, I did not started with the level I have now. But after hours and hours of work, of testing new things, and repeating works in my own dolls, I decided to take commissions… and well, the rest is history, with the years, the support of very good friends and clients that have blindly trusted in me, here I am. I’m restless and pushing, so doing face ups became something small… I needed more! And then, my first BJD appeared, and I started experimenting with urethane eyes, more or less.
Only fear a day I decide that I also need to do alpaca wigs… Just kidding, hahaha. Or maybe not…
Estoy bromeando jajaja. O no...

Your faceups are so pretty. Do you have a favorite style? Any face ups that is your fave? Do you take commissions?
Thank you so much! Let’s see… I cannot say that I work with a very specific style. Since natural and simple faceups, without much difficulty, going through fantasies up until realists with a lot of detail and textures, even with mods of any type. There is not a commission that seemed crazy that I refused to work with. What I can do say about my working motto is that I attempt to enhance the best of each sculpt and each requested expression. I love that each doll would have a unique personality.
Tus maquillajes son muy bonitos. ¿Tienes un estilo favorito/específico? ¿Algún maquillaje que sea tu favorito? ¿Haces comisiones?
¡Muchas gracias! Veamos...

Top: Natural-style commission. Bottom: Fantasy-style commission.

Although I’m very open, there is a style that is the most fun and comfortable to me: the realist, full of textures, pores, spots, tattoos, etc. Although it is the type with fewer commissions, it is the one with more feedback and likes, and with the most comments. I think people realize that I enjoy the work a lot more when I do that kind of face ups, and sometimes I wish I could center everything around that style, but I understand that not everybody likes it. I’m happy each time a client gives me freedom to improvise to add textures in a natural faceup.
I take advantage of my own dolls to test this or improvise things that I do not allow myself to do on commissions, out of respect to what it is asked of me by my clients. I give the 200% on each work to be able to improve in quality.

Realistic style commission.

It is hard to decide on a favorite face up, I’m very critic and I see an issue in everything… I always doubt between some of the last I’ve done: my own FL Angel, a modded Soom Deneb, and a Twingling Ingenuese.
I do take commissions to anybody that writes me by private message, as I do not usually work with monthly slots, although I sould! Hahaha. I’m currently not able to take any new works because I want to focus in releasing my own dolls, and I do not have free time to do so, but I hope to be able to open some slots in a couple of months. I will probably make it through Etsy, along with the new in-stock eyes, and previously announcing it on Flickr, Instagram and Facebook.

You have recently started offering handmade urethane eyes. How did you decided to start? Have you focused on a particular special characteristic for your eyes? Do you take commissions or work with stock?
You’ll see, as a lot of people in this hobby, I love urethane eyes. They have a beautiful shine and depth, that crystal/acrylics lack of, and although on a side I was willing to buy some, in the other hand I was like “why pay hundreds of dollars for some eyes that would take a year or more in arriving! I don’t even know if I would like them!”. We all have lived that wonderful moment of buying an accessory and what arrives it is not what we expected, completely different to the picture, not good for the doll, the color different to the site… sometimes it is terrible considering how expensive this hobby is.
I started toying with the idea of making them myself only my own BJDs. I wouldn’t expend that much money, and I would make sure that what I would make would be what I liked. Since I already knew some of the materials/processes do to my other work as a sculptor, It wasn’t going to be that hard. I handmade some bases for the scleras in different sizes, to be able to reproduce them in white urethane resin.

Then, I decided to focus in the characteristics that I see most people search for in this hobby: custom eyes at each other likes, different pupil sizes, types and colors, different style and size of irises, UV-coat on each layer, and a low dome so they would fit on most dolls, especially those with small or sleepy eyes. Although they were handmade, the overall result was amazing, even better that I could imagine, so I wanted to give the change to get eyes at an interesting price, with the extra that they are completely customize by each client.

GaroDoll's stock urethane eyes.

I do not only work with stock with immediate shipping through my Etsy, but as with the faceups, I offer pre-orders. You may ask for any possibility that you would thought of, and I even take private orders with reference photos.
My catalog is growing little by little, and I still have a lot of ideas regarding urethane eyes. New iris sizes, and fatansy-style variations. I will soon upload some stock eyes with dragon/cat pupils, and a galaxy.

And you have also been working on your own doll! What drew you to work with this? Which are your plans for your BJDs?
I never planned to make my own BJD nor create my own brand, GaroDoll, until I met the own who put me on the road to my true passion, my sculpting teacher Julio Pardo, creator of the brand Replicant Models, for which I also work for. It is thanks to him that I got enough courage to give it a try, and I have achieved it step by step. Its been two long and hard years, but now that I see the final light, I’m more motivated than ever.
I’m actually working on everything for my first pre-order, which will be accompanied with a giveaway through my social sites.
The first of all is a small YoSD sized doll of 25cm named Tina, along with her other face Nautina. I have a very characteristic style when sculpting, and I wanted to be able to reflect it on the BJDs I do. That is how Tina was born, a slightly thinner YoSD that what we are used to. Since she was human I thought of her a little plain, so I modded one of her homemade casts, and there it was Nautina, a more naughty version with elf ears. The body is double jointed in almost every joint, since I wanted a huge movement range. I have had a lot of fun attempting to pose her.
Me he divertido mucho haciéndola posar.

In the next place is my great Leas, a SD sized head for 60cm bodies. She is based on an original character that I invented years ago. It gives so much room when face-upping, that I tried to give her a lot of expressions on her face, to look innocent but that each angle would transmit a different feeling. The first pre-order will be head-only, but I’m already working on her head, and a SD sized bust.
At the moment, this is all! I have a lot of ideas stored in my notebook, since a cartoon-style tiny with an animal-soething that I’m dying to start, to bigger realistic sizes, and another type of unique ArtDolls, OOAK, among other project that I, from the bottom of my heart, hope you will like.

Do you have any workspace? How do you manage everything you do?
Yes, of course! My workspace is split in two parts: my creative zone, where I paint and do face-ups, do the BJDs designs, illustrations, models and sculptures, and the atelier that is the production zone (away from the study) that it is where I sand parts, work with silicone molds, resin production, and another slightly toxic materials.

Lua Garo's workspace: studio (top) and atelier (bottom).

This is such a great questions! I cannot explain how I exactly organize myself. Sometimes it is very hard being myself all alone against all the production, and this is something not everybody sees. Some PMs always go through me because I do not have physical time to answer everything, and it gives me a lot of sadness. What has worked the best until now is working in series, producing big amounts, and optimizing everything I can.
I prefer to work in 5 faceups at a time, and give base colors on each of them with the airbrush, I save some times and material, but makes slower the overall process, since there is a moment when I need to work on each of them independently. The same happens when making mods or eyes. I give the same time working in one pair of eyes, that in four, without lowering the high quality I want to give to my clients.
It will come a day when I have to retire to only the creative part and search for people that could carry the production under my brand name. Although this means that I, as enterprise, will be growing, and that is always positive.
Little by little, I’m finding people that supports me in delegating part of my work. I really want to be able to expand this and create a team, not being able to say that GaroDoll is only me, and with some good friends, a talented photographer as Victor Derde, an amazing designer as Guiomar, I want to collaborate with other artists that I have admired since a lot of time, such as Medusa Dollmaker, Tania Castrillón and Lydia Tausi, amazing faceup artists such as Softpoison, FabuulaRasa, x.Rumpelstiltskin.x and specially who I may mention as a partner, a seamstress that has golden hands, as Neki-chan and her brand Golden Strand.
It is important to me to mention them, since they are a huge support, and thanks to them I have a lot of hope on this going on ahead, and that it won’t be left in only one doll. I have a lot of plans that I want to be able to bring to reality and, without them, it won’t be possible.

This is a free space, is there something else that you would like to share with us?
I would only like to say to look at my social sites, specially Facebook and Instagram, since several giveaways are coming, such as my pre-orders in several skin types and a lot of news. My portfolio can be found in Flickr, on Instagram I upload photos of all type as a BJD artist, and as a sculptor/illustrator, and in Facebook there is info I update from time to time.
At least, but not less important, I want to thank to all the people that have supported me from the beginning, those who follow me, and are there every day. I fell flattered, all those details, each message, each comment, each person that decides to follow me because they like what I do; I know that without you I haven’t been where I am, although I believe I’m nothing in the BJD world, all this support helps me to keep growing and learning. So, THANK YOU!
