Interview with Cuarto's Doll

Hello everybody! New month is here, and we have a new interview! This month the spotlight is on Cuarto, the owner and artist behind Cuarto's Doll; you probably know her by her famous dragon Darkhorn and her resin creatures.

Cuarto was also very kind and is hosting a giveaway, and you can find info about it in the last questions of this interview.

As always, the interview is both in English and Spanish, and all the images are used with permission. There is also an owner photo which I'm also posting with written permission. With that said, let's go to the interview!

Hello! Thanks for agreeing to do the interview!
Hello! My name is Tatiana Jasova, but on the Internet I prefer to be called by my pseudonym - Cuarto. This interview is quite a surprise for me, and I hope it will be interesting for you too!

How did you meet BJDs? Do you have artistic background?
I met BJDs on the internet, where you can find plenty of photos of the figures created by Dream of Doll company. It was surprising for me to find that their dolls weren’t just static pieces of art and had articulation points on their bodies. Before that art wasn’t a serious business for me, and I guess I was lucky enough to change my life in the right moment – I studied in the technical university to become a programmer.
But, actually, my life was connected with art ever since my childhood – I always enjoyed modelling and dreamed of becoming designer. I also tried to study painting, so these dolls kind of pushed me in the right direction. I began sculpting my first doll without even thinking about what it will result in, or even if I will be able to finish it and bring my idea to life. I spent all of my free time on it and I literally had a crush on my new hobby. Of course, my first attempts looked ridiculous. I sometimes list photos of my old works just to smile and make sure that I’ve made an improvement comparing to what I had in the begging of my way.
The first is photo of my very first creations, hope you find them funny too. Then there are my first serious projects.

And from there, how did you decided to start Cuarto’s Dolls? Do you have a workspace to share with us?
To tell you the truth, the necessity of starting the brand was as sudden for me as this interview. “Cuarto’s Dolls” was started because I simply had to give name to what I was doing. I prefer to be simply called Cuarto (I work on my dolls alone).
When I introduced my first dragon to the public, I was astonished by the feedback. I was literally buried under hundreds of letters and emails, and I was greatly shocked. In a pleasant way, though, but still shocked. Because of that I had to create at least something very urgently – a website, where English-speaking people could find interesting information. I also needed a new workshop, bigger one to create dragons. During that period I was a bit out of touch, and actually only now the process begins to go well. I was doing lots of mistakes, and there’s plenty I would like to change, but it all was a valuable experience! For instance, it turned out that I can’t cope with everything by myself – for the most part, up to the last year “Cuarto’s Dolls” consisted of me and my friend, who helped me with mail from my customers. Now my father got interested in the technology of casting of polyurethane and joined us. He helps me a lot – you can imagine how much time it took when I was doing this all by myself. And now, due to their help, I can spend more time on my new projects, creating patterns for my dolls and developing myself as an artist.
As for the workshop – it is still not complete. I dream of moving to the suburbs, where I can have my Big Enough Workshop. Every artist knows how important it is ☺ But unless I build at least something satisfying on my plot of land in the suburbs, I’ll have to remain in the city, so this is why I can show only the workshop which is there. I have never shown my workplace to anyone, so I am a bit nervous, but I decided to show everything as it really is. So, are you ready to see the mess?
I think this is more interesting to see than just a table. Of course, I have plenty of shelves and boxes, no workshop can do without them, and enormous number of equipment, from Dremel to the heat gun.

Your dragons are awesome, and you made them even more awesome with the new resin colors. What drove you to this decision? Do you cast them yourself?
Thanks! As I have already told, when it was just a hobby, I had a crush on such things – not just modeling, but on everything connected with casting and resin. I began working with epoxy resin, as it doesn’t require pressure tanks to work with it. Epoxy resin is transparent, so it allows you to use your imagination fully, so I tried out lots of different tint, painting it in all the colors I could imagine. So the first thing I did as soon as I began to work with the polyurethane was finding one I could color myself in any tint I wished. Not using this method in creating dragons would be strange – who but the dragons must shine and sparkle?
Up to this winter I had been making my dolls all by myself, but now I am assisted by my father, and I am very grateful for that. Formerly I could do anything else because casting took 99% of my time, and now I returned to some of my previous projects and finally have something except dragons to show!

Do you have a personal BJD collection?
Yes, I have my own little collection consisting of 4 dolls and 2 MiniMe doll heads. Unfortunately, after starting creating my own dolls I don’t have neither time nor money to be interested in other ones =D
As for the dolls I have, the first one is the MiniMe representation of my favorite character on the DollZone body. After him I got the figure of centaur from Soom and then I got my hands on two more MiniMe heads, but I haven’t found suitable bodies for them yet. Not long ago one woman offered me to change two of my dragons on her dolls, and that is how I got awesome Chrome and Galena. To tell you the truth, I really like Soom dolls ^___^

Which is the process of designing a new doll? How much time do you pour into each project?
I am always interested in everything new, that’s why I don’t have any kind of settled process of designing. I try something new in every doll, and this slows the process of making gradually. It is very difficult to describe it even approximately, because I use various techniques. For instance, I sculpt some dolls using Darwi Rock or La Doll, some are sculpted from plasticine, as for the latter one – it was printed out on 3D-printer after being modeled on computer. I’d like to say that processes of priming and polishing are common for every doll, but now even this is not true – I learnt new technique using Möbius and Ketar and moved away from usual smoothness of surfaces to textures.
I feel some kind of a level-up, as I learnt some new techniques of modeling and shaping, and now I fly on the wings of new possibilities. To be more precise – I learnt how to make fine double part moulds finally! Of course, you have to work harder on such moulds, but the result is worth it. To tell you the truth, I feel like a student who finally found new aspects of his favorite subject.
The time I spend on each doll also varies. The fastest to create was little giraffe, it took me a week to create him in a wave of inspiration. As for the longest one, it is Ketar, I’ve been working on him for 1,5 year and it is still not finished. I am happy I finally began to cast first parts of Ketar!

And regarding sculpting and projects… Are you working in any new project? Can you share a little of them with us?
Oh yeah! I’ve got lots of unfinished projects, so sometimes it may be hard to remember all of them! I’ve got incomplete hell hound standing on my shelf, and in the drawer I have wolf, fox, tiny fairy, owl, some eyes preform, hippocampus, deer, wings all ready to turn Möbius into Leviathan, and, of course, Ketar… I am probably forgetting something. I feel shy to take photos of my unfinished works, but there is some of them.
Now I try hard to finish at least any of them. I am very glad I have more time on that!

Sadly, the hobby suffers with recasts, and you have been affected by it. What is your statement on the matter?
Oh, it is very depressing topic. It upset me a lot when I hear about it, and I am still afraid I will have to give up making dolls because of that, but, thanks God, these are only fears.
Actually, my position on that problem is not as aggressive as it is expected to be. Of course, it is theft, but I cannot do anything with that, that’s why I think it is unwise to say unnecessary words. My clients support me a lot with their trust, participation, and patience.

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
I would like to tell you that I want to make a new tradition – one exemplar of every new basic doll will be given out via lottery drawing. I’ve already held such lottery, but it wasn’t covered well enough. I want the next lottery to coincide with the publishing of this interview and it will be available for everyone who read this, so feel free to join in, I’ll be very pleased! Participation requires only registration; I will pay all the shipping fees. You can register on my website via this link by simply giving your email and home address.
I need home address to get rid of people registering several times to increase their chances of victory, as I will send the doll to the address given in the registration list.

Thank you so much for doing the interview! It was a pleasure!
Thank you a lot! I think, as a farewell I wish all my colleagues inspiration and interesting breath taking dolls! ;)
¡Muchas gracias por hacer la entrevista! ¡Fue un placer!

I really liked to see that you can work with a small place and that's the real thing, people should be aware that these artists work hard for what they have. WOnderful that she has her father helping her now! ^__^ That's nice! I love that little giraffe <3 How adorable! I've seen many of her dragons since my friends have them, how fantastic!

  6. Blackdragon 4/9-2016 Thank you very much for the interview with Cuarto. I have ordered in the past from her and a new order is on its way to me. I hate the theft of her unique designs and am very supportive towards artist doll makers. I hope that many others will follow my example and boycot the recast market. :)

Any recast of any artist or company is theft. There are a lot of pro-artist/anti-recast people out there (including me) and that is a good thing. I do hope we can stop recasts some day because they hurt the hobby a lot.
