Interview with FabuulaRasa

Hello everybody! Another month has arrived, and therefore we have a new interview! This time the spotlight is on propertyoftheuchiha, the faceup artist of FabuulaRasa. She is from Philipinas and is also a proud member of the Manika Manila community.

As always, the interview is in both English and Spanish, and all images were used with permission! Hope you will like it!

Hello! Thanks a lot for doing the interview!
Hello, and thanks for giving me the opportunity to do this interview! I'm propertyoftheuchiha, the Faceup artist of FabuulaRasa Aesthetics. You can call me POTU or Anj for short.
I live in sunny tropical Philippines. I love coffee, muesli, Rock music and writing! I'm a dog lover. And I'm allergic to cats. >_< In my spare time, I jog, watch documentaries, read about cryptozoology, mess around with Photoshop and play with art and dolls. I love dinosaurs, gore and horror.
¡Hola!

Anj (propertyoftheuchiha) and Doki, her BJD.

I always start with a classic question. How did you find out about BJDs?
I used to be very active on DeviantArt. That's where I first encountered a BJD photo on the Popular page. I was so confused about what it was that I had to research more. I remember thinking it was the most beautiful human-looking thing I'd ever seen and I couldn't get enough of it.
I became obsessed over the next few weeks and discovered more and more about them. I got into collecting after I realized there was a small local community for it here! That gave me the push to finally buy something I thought (at the time) was ridiculously expensive. I'm not kidding when I say my first BJD changed my life. Both I and my collection has grown a lot since then.

And how did you start with the face-ups? How do you currently work with commissions slots?
HOW:
For me, it was a very typical story. I got a doll second-hand, and decided to risk doing my own faceup. It turned out horrific, of course - haha! I wanted to improve and decided to do free slots. After a few months, I started charging very small, while offering free slots. Gradually, I listened to people around me, and increased my price. I sacrificed a lot in the beginning, losing more than earning. 7 years later, brings us to today! But I'm still finding ways to improve. This was my first and second faceup, which I seldom share.

EXTRA SERVICE:
I've applied an option called "FabuulaRasa Lower Lash Extensions" - which are real eyelashes attached to the bottom lashes to reinforce the look. The profiles of dolls become more realistic with this application!
I've also tried modding - Beware: Gore warning! Check it here and here.
SERVICIO EXTRA:
También he intentado modificaciones – Les aviso ¡Hay gore! Miren aquí y aquí.

BIDDING:
I have done what I started calling "blind bidding" - where I showcase a head for people who might want it. I set a starting bid. They can then PM me with an offer. The highest bid will NEVER be disclosed publicly. At the end of the deadline, the head will go the winner, and the highest bid amount remains anonymous.
I'm thinking of doing more of these in the future. It's a great way to get a sense of how much your work is actually worth. I firmly believe the market determines your price, and I will respect what the market has to say about me.
APUESTAS:

SHOP OPENING SYSTEM:
I open my faceup shop whenever I feel like I have time and the commitment. It's first-come, first-serve at a specific time zone and date. It usually takes an hour to fill 20 slots. My day job demands a lot from me, and I don't have limitless energy. I know when I open shop, I have to commit lots of energy. I'm there to satisfy the customer. If they aren't happy, I'm not happy either. Fabuularasa is still here because I want to make owners love their dolls and never part with them if possible! My dolls are important to me, and I want to pass that feeling of inseparable relationships to other doll owners. That's what I believe!
Mi trabajo me demanda demasiado y no tengo energía ilimitada. Si no estan felices, yo tampoco estoy feliz.

Do you have a workspace to share with us? Do you work in batches or commission by commission?
WORKSPACE:
My workspace is very simple. I primarily work with 3 kinds of paints: One for the faceups, one for tattoos, one for airbrush work.
My faceup paints require thinner, while tattoo paints more require water and airbrush paints require airbrush solution. Tamiya, Reeves, Liquitex and Vallejo are my go-to paints.
Mungyo are my go-to for pastels for great pigmentation and blending.
I work with a variety of brushes, about 10-12 in total. And if requested, I have 5 different kinds of pearl powders and a palette of Tamiya Weathering (for metallic effects).

WORKFLOW:
I start with 2 stages of pastels. First stage is contouring (basic face shape and highlights), and the second stage is detailed contouring (eyebrow shape, lip shape, eyelid lines and eyeliner).
I call this 45%, and have the customer approve this stage before I move on to painting.
During painting, if there are freckles, I start with those. Unlike methods I've seen other people do, I dot them one by one with a special frayed brush, in varying sizes and paint thickness, and do 2 layers. Then I paint in the eyeliner, eyebrows, liplines, lipdots and eyelashes. I seal this layer before adding in extra painting details like wrinkles, extra eyelid lines, or client additions.
I call this 85% and have the customer approve the colors and overall look at this stage again.
I seal this and add in changes to the color, the gloss, glitters, pearl powder, etc. and if need be, have it approved again before final sealing. Overall, I seal my work about 5-6 times.
With tattoos, I sketch what I want to draw first, and then paint over it in layers, depending on what kind of tattoo it is.

Anj's workspace.

You also do tattoos! How did you started on them? Do you have a personal favorite among your works?
The first tattoos I did were just with black paints and mostly solid and traced. It was the simplest kind. But later on I started using pastels as color. And then when I couldn't get the results I felt were needed, I moved on to acrylic paints. I think when you do a tattoo, you also have to believe in the concept and what you want to happen. And when you make a mistake - you're able to make it work to your advantage somehow. All part of improvising! Haha!
My personal favorite will be tattoos I designed on my own dolls because I really tried to experiment and focus on little details just as much as the bigger picture. In my mind, I was thinking: "If I'm gonna take photos of my doll from any angle and from however closely, I won't have anything to hide!"

And about your store name, FabuulaRasa, how did you pick it? Does it have a special meaning or story behind?
I always liked the idea of starting fresh and new. That's what my first doll meant to me, and when he got his first faceup, it became a feeling I wanted to share with everyone.
FabuulaRasa comes from the latin phrase "Tabula rasa" - which means "clean slate." It's the idea that the doll comes to us blank, and it is up to us to dream and re-design and create something from that blank doll. I decided to merge the word "fabulous" with the phrase just so it could associate more with "beauty" which is the ultimate goal! :)

You also have a personal BJD collection. How many dolls do you have? Do you have preference for a size? Do you have a favorite among your dolls?
I currently have 9 SDs, 1 Lati Yellow and 1 Tiny, 2 Yosds, and 4 floating heads. That makes a total of 13 full dolls and 4 floating heads! (I also co-own a doll with a friend, so 13-1/2!) My preference is really obvious, haha!
My first doll is my favorite doll, a Migidoll Ryu named Dice. He's been my support system since the day I got him, and we've been through tons of things together. He and I will never part. ;)
También tienes una colección personal. ¿Cuántas muñecas tienes? ¿Tienes preferencias por un tamaño? ¿Algún favorito entre tus muñecos?
Actualmente tengo 9 SDs, 1 Lati Yellow y un Tiny. 2 YoSD, y cuatro cabezas flotantes.

And you are also part of ManikaManila! What can you tell us about this?
I’m very happy that you know about our community, and I'd be happy to. :D
ManikaManila, which was started in 2005, is a BJD community based in the Philippines and with Filipino members from all around the world. Currently, we are on Facebook, have a website, our own forum and an Instagram account!
I think the best thing about our community is that we're very sociable and active! We always want to meet new people. We have meets for newbies, and themed parties throughout the year. We have our own doll event to sell and display, and even hold small meets for people who just want to meet certain dolls or people, or people who live farther away and come to visit. Our moderators are doing a great job running our social media arm, volunteering aid, brainstorming, and hosting events.
Apart from the common knowledge about BJDs, our members have also become good friends. Some of us meet up occasionally just to hang out with or without BJDs. We have held meets to welcome BJD owners from other countries too!
Some of our dolls are tied into each other's stories, and we encourage each other to pursue new things. We lend each other doll props, clothes, accessories and wigs, even the dolls themselves to help with member projects. We make gifts and sew each other things to practice. We are a growing, thriving, creative community. And the best thing about us is we have made each other better or happier - as artists, storytellers, photographers, crafters and sewers. We help each other -sometimes by doing fundraisers. We helped the country - by doing charity work, and we are constantly learning from each other. All of that makes a great community, and I am proud to be part of one!

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
If this hobby is what you love, if your dolls are important to you... keep saving, keep imagining, keep creating. Always find things about your specialty to improve, whether it's faceups, sewing, crafting props, writing, animating, photography. You might not be the best - I know I'm not - And that's okay!!! But using others as inspiration and making your own work better at your own pace is what is important in the end. It will give you results. People will see your effort, you will feel better about what you have achieved. The most important part is that you're having fun whether you're alone, on social media or with your doll friends.
And finally, don't let the negativity and hate get you down.
Be optimistic, and don't waste your energy on the bad. Love yourself. And if your dolls or your characters bring out the best in you, use them to become a better person. If you think they are alive, then bring them to life. They will always live through you!

  2. I think anyone who has ever attempted to do a face-up can agree with her 100%. (For the record, my first face-up was much worse than hers.) But I kept trying and I got better. I'm still not as good as she is, but it's very inspiring to see what can be achieved. I love interviews and articles like this! Thanks for doing this!
