Interview with Millimina's Faceup Service

Hello everybody! New month means new interview, and I'm very happy to welcome Johanna from Millimina's Faceup Service! She is a Swedish face-up artist, and will also be attending the upcoming convention Jointed Hearts.

As always, the interview is both in English and Spanish, and all images are used with permission. You can click any of the images to go directly to Johanna's Flickr. So, without further ado... let's go to the interview!

Hi there! Thank you so much for doing the interview!
I really love your interviews! So thank you for asking me! Musume’s “My dolly adventures” is like a Idol magazine at the early 90’th for me. I can read about all my favourite artists and idols here. I’m very thankful you put all this effort doing and publishing all this interviews.
My name is Johanna, but I use to call myself “Millimina” when I’m posting anything bjd related on Internet. I live at the east coast, in a small town called Oskarshamn in Sweden. I use to paint faceups on my spare time and I feel really passionate about it!
¡Hola!

Art vs Artist: Johanna and her dolls.

Let’s start with the basics. How did you meet BJDs? Do you have artistic background?
My first meeting with a BJD was in 2012. I was at home with our newborn baby, nursing and googled on the internet. I had just started to collect Monster High dolls, and looked for new releases. Suddenly I saw pictures of other interesting dolls as Pullip and Blythe. But it was when I came across a really sweet picture of a Littlefee Ante I was completely stuck. Even my husband noticed that something unusual had happened to me, I was completely in love with BJDs.
I work as an art teacher at a secondary school. I love it, but in one week I meet about three hundred students, so I’m glad I found this relaxing but yet creative hobby. The best part is, I can use as many of my other interests, such as photography, painting and sewing in the same hobby, It is really lovely.

And from there, how did you started offering face-ups commissions? Do you work with commission slots?
My First BJD was a second hand Dollmore Model Doll Bonnie Hopez. She had a really nice factory faceup with perfect painted eyelashes, purple eyeshadow and soft, glossy lips. I had read quite a lot about bjds before I bought my first BJD, and knew that you can paint faceups yourself, if you have the right equipment and materials at home. Of course, I was eager to try to paint my own faceup, but I was not ready to wash her factory faceup. A year later, when I ordered my second BJD (my first grail, Doll Zone Annie) directly from Doll Zone, of course, I ordered her unpainted. I had also bought a dummy head that I dared to paint on a bit.

I painted my first faceup commission to a girl who contacted me via the Swedish BJD community. She paid for the shipping and I painted. We continued to stay in touch and I got a few more "orders" from the same girl. I got the chance to practice and it meant so very much to be believed in. Thanks Camilla! <3 br=""> Because I like to sew, and gladly sews clothes to my BJDs, I opened an Etsy shop selling BJD clothes and accessories. My shop is called Sueded Girl, and is now more the only place I sell faceup slots from. I have a basic faceup order, and you can add if you want freckles, tattoos and/or beards. It is also possible to order removal of old faceup.

Do you have a workplace to share with us? How do you organize to do face-ups?
My workspace has changed several times over the years. In the beginning I had a hobby and crafts room, totally for myself. I could have both faceup materials, heads and my BJD collection in a closet that was in the room. Since we live in a fairly small apartment (me, my husband and our three children), I change the working space as the children grew older. Now I have a really nice place in the middle of the apartment. I have bought a giant IKEA table, and shelves for storage. Best of all is that I can have my girls on display.
These days, we, my husband and I, just sign a contract for a big yellow house at the countryside. So I think I can expand my work space a little bit more in the future. I’m so excited over this new possibility.
When I paint faceups I use a large tile that I can set up all the material on. Then I have a good handle on where my brushes, paints, water and other materials are available. I usually use dry pastels and water colors when I paint. I'm really excited to try to paint a faceup with airbrush, but will probably need to do some more research before I buy one.

You Flickr is called “A place for Millimina”. Why did you choose this name? Does it have a particular meaning?
My Flickr page is called A place for Millimina, and my faceup service is called Millimina's faceup service, because Millimina was the name I gave my first BJD.
My First BJD, which was supposed to be my only BJD, needed a name. I wanted a real doll's name, so my husband and I thought together, and Laban the Little Ghost’s younger sister Labolina has a doll named Millimina (we are parents of young children) XD
My Millimina always has blue hair and blue eyes. A year ago I bought a new Millimina, a Iplehouse EID Asa on a SID body. Asa is one of my grail dolls since forever, so it feels great to have her home.

Your face-ups are really gorgeous and varied, from fantasy to natural. Do you have a personal favorite? And a most popular face-up?
I like to paint different faceups. I get happy every time I get the chance to work with an unknown face. I like to paint everything from tinies to SD heads. Grey resin is very difficult to paint on, I think, but it is so delicious and the colors just lights up. Many clients, especially those who send more realistic heads, usually order "light makeup, yet natural, with soft lips" faceup.
Me gusta pintar diferentes mquillajes.

And you recently received some new dollies, congrats! Would you share with us about your personal collection?
From the very beginning, I thought I would be pleased, if I only could get one bjd. But it did not take long before I had many more dolls on my wish list. I have always stuck to different types of girls, in different sizes and from different companies. Sometimes I have fallen in love with a head from one company, but decided to buy a body from another company. I have about 5-6 hybrids, though all is not finished, and they are unpacked at the moment. I love Hybrids!
When I have decided which girl I should buy (I do not bond with the guys so easily), I start planning for her style. In most cases, I choose her style, of what I am eager to sew for her. Then, all the other girls have to try the clothes, and you can no longer guess what style they have. So typical me :P
In my dreams, I wish I can show you all my girls finished ... a Mori girl, a skater, a punk rocker, a rockabilly girl, a fairy, a steampunk girl, a mini-me, a fairy kei girl and a bat / vampire girl ... and I have so many other ideas. I think I would need an extra day a week, every now and then.
Currently it's only my shoe collection that match my styling plans! But I promise that I will have my Steampunk girl ready for the convention “Jointed Hearts” in September. Right now I am working on her top hat.

Let’s go back to face-ups. Are there any materials that are your favorites? Have you changed your supplies over time?
I really love my big box of Rembrandt soft pastel colors. It contains so many fine shades and colors. It was given to me by my father a long time ago, so clearly it was the box I picked up when I started painting faceups three years ago. A big personal breakthrough for me was when I started using a brush and watercolors, instead of watercolor pencils. There is a big difference in the type of line you can paint with a brush, and you can also decide how translucent the color should be. I do not use acrylic paint so gladly, because I would like to erase and redo, for example, eyelashes. I want the ability to erase as many times as necessary, for me to be happy with the result. Oh, god, it can eat up time!
I build up a faceup with many different layers of paint. I spray with MSC between all layers of paint, so the color will remain. The spray also gives a slightly rough surface to paint on, so that the paint does not slip around and look patchy.
Right now, I am considering to completely stop working with MSC and replace it with any other sealant spray, because my body reacts with a bad cough, even if I use a gas mask with brand new filters. After three years, It still takes me forever to finish one faceup. The next goal I have given myself is that I have to work up my speed… and I really have to buy an airbrush(!?) XD
Volvamos a los maquillajes. ¿Hay materiales que sean tus favoritos? ¿Has cambiado tus recursos con el tiempo?

You have also participated in exhibitions! What can you tell us about that?
I was asked if I wanted to showcase my dolls and photographs on a small Advent exhibition. Of course I wanted to. It was an art association that held the exhibition. I was told that they wanted to be able to buy a doll of me, to give away in the association's art lottery. I did not want to sell any of my girls I had at home, but I had just bought a MNF Mirwen in secondhand, so I did prepared her from head to toe. It felt great to pass on a BJD, with my homemade clothes, styling and faceup on, as a true art work.
On 3-4 September 2016, I showcase my girls, again. I'll be at Jointed Hearts, a BJD convention in Gothenburg. I hope I will get to meet you all there!

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
This is how I think about creativity:
When I'm in a development phase, and it feels like I'm never going to get better at what I do, I usually try to think of this adage by Stephen McCranie "The master has failed more times than the beginner has even tried." (I often feel like a beginner!)
I believe that this hobby can bring many happy meetings between new and old friends. If we are encouraging and helpful as possible to the new members in the hobby, and support those who want to be creative, then more people want to practice their creative dreams.
