Penny Dreadful in Miniature

Another sewing post! I hope I'm not annoying with these, I've been sewing non-stop since a couple months already, and I want to share my results.

This time, I was commission by the amazing meganandherdolls (that is her Instagram name, she is on DoA too!). This commission was originally for another outfit, but then she asked me if I could do an Edwardian-inspired dress for a Withdoll girl. The gown is actually a replica of one of Penny Dreadful's (it is a TV show, actually).

The outfit in question was from Season 2 Episode 2. You can see a sitting photo here, and a closeup of the neck here. It was quite a challenge finding photos of this outfit, so we made a Pinterest board to keep track of the images I found, some patterns, and also other Edwardian clothing that could gives us hints on the skirt, mostly.

Anyways, here are some photos! As always, I have anecdotes and I will share them between photos :D

When we started talking about the dress, I did my research and asked about velvet on a fabric store. That store is huge and has a lot of variety of laces, silks and that sort of fabric. It is true that things in my country are ridiculously expensive, but the saleswoman asked me USD100 for 1 meter of velvet, and the smaller amount I could purchase was 1 meter!!! Picture me with a polite smile saying that I was just asking, while my shadow was exactly like The Scream painting!!

That was too much fabric and too expensive, to be honest. After talking with Megan and getting some options for the skirt and the bodice, I went to another store. I finally found a local alternative to the velvet (the texture is mostly the same), and it was so thin! It was also more mindfully priced, and it didn't had a purchase minimum. I still frown over the velvet being at USD100. It is no surprise, as some laces on that store are priced directly in Euros =S

This would be all for today! I had a lot of fun with this dress, and it was lovely to work with Megan! I definitely need to research more on Edwardian. You know? I see a light similarity with Natural Form Era from the Victorian time. Lovely!

Anyways, hope you are doing great!! I would like to share photos of my belated bday presents, but those two packages have been stuck at customs for three weeks already... in a custom office that is not in my city, BTW. I'm getting scared about them, but calling in is simply useless =S I wish they would move and get here already!

  1. Me encanta!!!

  3. A gorgeous and very stately dress
o_O I can't imagine any one paying over a hundred dollars for a piece of fabric unless it's laced with gold or something! O_O!

Well, in that store I saw some bridal fabrics at 250EUR per meter! In EUROS! My country is no in EU and doesn't use Euros either! I was like OMGWTF xD

  4. I love this dress! What is the fabric that you used? In the photos it looks like fleece. I also love the black buttons in back. Are they buttons or beads? The scale is perfect. I would never pay $100 for any fabric! I buy many of my doll fabrics from the remnants bin, especially when I know I only need a small piece. They never cost more than a few dollars.

    1. Happy you like it! The skirt is actually a sort of reversible satin used on the matte side. The top is from a local velvet alternative (that was not as ridiculously expensive). And the buttons are beads, actually, but they look good in scale :D
Remnants bins are the best! I have bought from those too!

  6. Lovely job Musume, velvet is not the easiest fabric to work with. I love Victorian inspired costumes. :)
