Interview with SproutyDoll

Hello everybody! New month calls for a new interview, and this time it is Amanda from SproutyDoll! She makes some amazing and very unique urethane eyes for BJDs, so I hope you will enjoy this interview.

As always, all the photos on the interview are used with permission. Regarding this, I will also have to thank Athena Roseanna Tse (aka draglian23) for allowing me to use some of her photos featuring her stunning dolls that wear SproutyDoll eyes. All photos will be linked to either Sprouty's website, or to Athena's Flickr.

Anyways, English and Spanish, as always! And without further ado, to the interview!

Hi there! Thanks so much for doing the interview!
Thank you for interviewing me! It always feels strange to talk about myself, but I will do my best! Just a little introduction about me... My name is Amanda, and I am a 26 year old woman. I work at a school, and in my spare time I enjoy playing video games, binge-watching shows, sewing for my dolls and writing. My hobbies are kind of all over the place, but most of the time they are related to engineering and creative problem solving... Particularly when it comes to my shop, I am always trying new things and finding ways to improve.
¡Hola!

How did you first found about BJD? Did it take you too much time to own your first doll?
When I was twelve, I saw a Volks BJD during a Google search for a school project. I fell in love with it, though I didn't know it was a limited release at the time. I can't remember the sculpt anymore, but it was a small doll, maybe an MSD or a Yo-SD. I spent years idolizing BJDs and Dollfie Dreams and ended up getting my first doll when I was 21.

And then, how and why did you decided to start making eyes?
In 2013 I opened up a small Etsy store selling doll clothes to make more money to buy dolls. I have an obsession with finding new patterns. I eventually ended up closing that shop down, and reopening it under a new brand for MSD/Minifee clothes. I loved to sew, but I found that it was getting difficult to keep up with orders and I had started to think about making resin eyes, since I had a little experience with resin jewelry. I have to say, some of the first eyes I made I was so proud of, but looking back? They look really bad! Even now, though, I struggle a lot with thinking they look good. I am always trying to find ways to improve and sometimes that gets the better of me.
Y luego ¿cómo y cuándo decidiste empezar a hacer ojos?

You currently offer several “collections” of eyes, and each of them has unique characteristics. What inspired you for each of them? Do you have a favorite collection?
It's really hard to decide a favorite. Usually, my favorite is the newest collection that I make... I tend to love them all at first, then the interest in them slowly diminishes with time. That's why I tend to rotate a lot. Any favorite sellers, or items that sell a lot, get to stay though! I would have to say my all-time personal favorite has got to be the Gemstone line, though! I love how they look like sparkly, faceted gems. There are so many gemstone colors I'd like to add.

Regarding the eye-making process, do you have a workspace? How do you organize the process?
My workspace is a messy computer desk... As bad as that is! I wish I had enough room, and perhaps when I buy my own house I will be able to give my eyes, sewing and dolls their own room together so I can have it all organized and nice! For now, I am struggling to get through the mess... Sometimes it can cause delays because a pair of eyes will end up on a shelf somewhere instead of shipped properly!
I am lucky to find a supplier for my eye boxes and the foam inserts inside of them. I had spent so long in the past cutting and making the boxes by hand, and I was never entirely satisfied. The new boxes are so sturdy that a person can stand on them and they don't break! Because of that, I have more time to devote to the eyes themselves. The basic process isn't so hard, but it's fine-tuning it that takes up most of the time and effort in the process. I make my own eye molds, so in order to do that you must have an original piece to mold from. I recently went with a company in China that helped produce my eye bases through 3D printing and refining, and because of that, I no longer have to use a clear resin coating on the outsides of them to make them glossy. I was never able to get a perfect high-gloss finish by doing it at home. I use those originals to make my molds. After making the molds, I let them cure for a week to make sure the silicone lasts a very long time. If you use them too soon, they can cause bubbles and imperfections in the casting. I try to cast carefully in small batches so I don't have to sand the eye bottoms anymore, which saves time and energy, and isn't as bad for my carpal tunnel syndrome.
I usually cast a bunch of the white bases at once, then I have them ready for when customers order. I can just pick out the size I need, then the best part comes. Decorating! I don't use paints, but pure pigments mixed with clear resin. When coming up with new designs, I will make about 25 pairs in a single color and decorate them all in different ways, and pick out my favorites from those sets. Then I will package the rest up and put them as free extras when customers place an order. I usually let them sit for a week to let the first clear resin and pigment cure, then I use UV resin over the top to add details like gemstones, seashells, metal flakes or whatever else the design calls for. I let the UV sit for a few days in order to make sure everything is fully cured. If they need it, I clean up the eyes and package them inside the foam and into the boxes. I don't tend to label them for individual eyes, but if I am doing a big order I will make special labels for each box.

Regarding eye sizing, how do you measure your eyes and do you offer “special” sizes? Do you work on stock or commissions?
I do offer commissions, though now that I have a full-time job and go to University full-time, I struggle to find the time for commissions. If it's something I think is not too difficult, or something that seems very interesting to me, I will give it a shot! I will try anything once... or twice. Right now, I don't really offer special sizing or custom sizes, because it's so time and material-expensive to produce molds for a single set of eyes.
Most of my eyes are standard sizes, comparable to Mako or ED eyes, although the 14mm mold is a little wide on the iris, 8mm instead of 7mm. I have contacted the company that produced the originals for me and I'm trying to get them to produce a new one for me, because the "doe-eyed' look is good for the decorative/fantasy eyes, but looks a little strange for the rest of them.

Have you made collaborations with artists or companies?
I am pretty close friends Kai from Darjeeling Aesthetics, and Athena Tse, who provides most of my photos for my website. They are all wonderful people and I like to send them eyes to try out for their dolls and for their portfolio photos. Other than that, I have sent a small package to Andreja, who was kind enough to do a video on the eyes that I sent her! They look so lovely in her dolls, I hope to have a doll painted by her one day. I am working on building a network of artists to collaborate with, although time is an issue for me, as it is with most artists, I think!

What about your own dolls? Do you want to share a little about them with us?
My dolls are kind of... neglected. I feel bad about it! I don't really have very many BJDs anymore, since I fell in love with Dollfie Dreams a while back. I do have Momi, a Doll Family H hybrid, Athena, a Dearmine Angela, and Winter, a Fairyland Juri '13 Minifee as far as resin girls. I have 3 Dollfie Dreams and 1 Mini Dollfie Dream as well as countless Barbies from the 1980s and 1990s, and a moderate collection of Monster High dolls. I have 2 Pullips, and 3 Azone Pureneemos as well, and hope to get some Blythe dolls soon!

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
I am just glad that I get to offer my services and products to people. As cheesy as it sounds, I realy do appreciate my customers! Without a doubt, I would still be making eyes even if no one bought them, but at least now I don't have boxes full of eyes sitting around, never being used... I am really glad that everyone loves the eyes I make, since their kind words and reviews make me see that I am doing something good and helping people complete their dolls.

Thank you so much for doing the interview! :D
I really enjoyed this interview! I've never done anything like this before, so I was surprised how nice it was to be able to answer some questions about myself and my shop. I want to thank everyone for reading, since my writing can be a little lengthy at times. I hope that I can keep expanding my shop and learning each and everyday, and as long as I have customers, I can continue to do so! Thank you all so much.

  1. Lovely eyes! I wish she made smaller sizes, because I find myself getting into dolls that wear 6mm or 8mm eyes. It's so hard to find anything interesting and individual for them. I'm amazed that she can work next to her computer keyboard and not get anything on it. If it were me, I'd be shopping for a new keyboard several times a year!

  4. Wonderful eyes! It was interesting to read and I am amazed of the differences how we find our way to this hobby! :) And carpal tunnel syndrome, not fun at all. I have had that for many years, so I can imagine that one does try to find something to make it easier to work. Thanks for sharing!
