Interview with Raquel Clemente

Another month means another interview! This time I had the honor of interviewing Raquel Clemente, a very talented faceup artist from Spain, who also works on Monster High and Pullip dolls. The interview is both in English and Spanish, and all the photos were used with permission. I hope you will love this interview as much as I enjoyed working with her!

And without further ado, let's start!

Hello! It is an honor to have this interview with you!
Hi! First of all, I want to thank you, Musume, for inviting me to the interview. It is a pleasure to be able to collaborate in such a pretty and complete blog.
My name is Raquel, I was born in 1989, and I’m from Seville, a gorgeous city in southern Spain. Since I was a child I’ve had a strong attraction to everything art-related. I love painting and drawing, and that is why I majored in Art, and got a specialization degree on engraving and graphic design. My favorite things are illustrations, music, photography, reading, dolls, make up. I’m also an animal lover, specially cats. In fact, I have three :-)
¡Hola! ¡Es un honor hacer esta entrevista contigo!
¡Hola!

Let’s start with a classic: how did you find out about BJDs?
I got interested in BJDs when I was 14. I’ve always loved to search photos on internet and save those that inspired me. I remember I was browsing anime screenshots and found some photos of these dolls. I was completely smitten, they were nothing like I’ve seen before. But back in that time, the information I had access to was very limited, the website languages (usually Korean or English) was an obstacle, and we didn’t had most of the facilities we have today to buy online.
Not counting, of course, that the price tag of these dolls was impossible for a child of that age. So back in the time, it had to be enough with wonderful photos that those lucky owners made of their dolls. And seeing that the dream was going away, my interest for them started to fade, although I still leved them. In 2010 I started collecting the famous Monster High. I lost the count of how many of them I have. I stopped buying them because I had no more storage space. Thanks to these dolls I started customizing and, with time, to work of that. It wasn’t until 2015 when I bought my first BJD, a Minifee Chloe that I still have.

And how did you started with faceups? And to take on commissions?
It all started as a hobby in 2012, when I started to repaint my first Monster Highs. I remember I felt frustrated because I couldn’t get the results I wanted, such as more detail and clarity on lines. Seraching the right materials was a whole dilemma. It cost me a lot of time and money to find the appropriate ones. When I thought I had achieved a good level, I published photos on Flickr and put my first dolls to sell on eBay. In the meantime, I kept practicing and customizing them completely, because I not only repainted them but also did their wigs, clothing and accessories. If you go to my Flickr gallery, you can see the evolution until now.
Entonces, ¿Cómo comenzaste a hacer maquillajes? ¿Y a tomar comisiones?

After that, people started asking about commissions, and I decided to work by requests. My first BJD faceups where on 2013. A girl contacted me through Flickr to ask me if I could faceup her BJD. Since I never had worked on one, I saw a good chance to have access to other dolls, and not focus only on Monster Highs. So I offered these first faceups by free, until month later I started to charge for them.
After these five years, I’m very happy with the level I have achieved, but I feel that I can give more of me, so I keep looking ways to improve.

You work on Monster Highs and Pullips, besides BJDs. Which is your favorite to work on, and why?
I find it hard to choose, because all of them have their pros and cons. But regarding the type of doll that makes me feel more comfortable to work with, not only because of the time it requires but because of the materials I use, I said I prefer BJDs. Starting with the base that each faceup requires many days of working, sadly I’m not an artist that can finish a faceup on 3~5 hours. Working on Monster Highs demands a lot more time than on BJDs.
The process and technique I follow for MH is completely different, mostly because I need to draw the eyes, add lashes and gloss on the eyes. Because of that, I’m not accepting MH commissions. I prefer to have creative freedom on them, and work in them without pressure to occasionally sell them on my Etsy store. I have so many ideas for them, and I hoping to get started.
Regarding Pullips, I love working in them. I haven’t had the chance to repaint many of them, but I have deeply enjoyed the ones I made. Because these dolls are bigger and have movable eyelids, draws me to make fantasy faceups and be more creative than in the others.

From all the works you have done… do you have a personal favorite? And a most popular among your followers?
Among my own favorites, I can count those that are reference to real makeup photography. Since I was a teenager I have loved the makeup world. I always watched Youtube videos and tutorials of girls teaching how to makeup, match colors, and so on… and I practiced on myself. When painting BJDs, I use the makeup knowledge I have acquired in all those years, using colors in the same way when I makeup myself. Blending shadows to get a more realistic effect. It is like if I did the makeup on tiny people. This is one of the reasons of why I love BJDs so much!

Among my followers, the most popular work I’ve done probably is one in which the reference was Rose Shock. She has a very unique and personal style, and doing it in one of my dolls was very fun. I love that type of jobs!

Do you have any workspace? Which are your favorite materials to work with?
I have a room in my apartment that I use as a workspace, and where we also have our computers. I hope to change it with time, in order to work in different sectors of the room according to my needs. Although the table is pretty big and I can work comfortable, I still need to do everything on the same place: painting, sealing, photographing… I’d like to separate those spaces and to have everything organized in drawers.
Regarding my favorite materials, I love to use the airbrush and pastel bars. Applying color is my favorite step and the most fun.

Regarding BJDs, do you have a personal collection? Which one is your favorite store?
Yes, I do have a small collection, and I plan to increase its size with time. My first BJD, a tan MNF Chlow from 2015, and the second one is a fullset Minifee Ria. I also have three Nympheas dolls deers, and some floating MNF heads. As you can see, I love the mini size and Fairyland. The body design and poseability of these dolls is amazing. Without doubt, they are my favorite store. You may think it is unbelievable, but I still have my dolls without faceups. I have a general idea of their characters, faceups and colors… but it is so hard to pick only one… why is it so hard to make a choice when they are my own dolls?

Finally, is there something else that you want to share with us?
I wouldn’t leave without thanking to all the people that have supported me on these years, for trusting in me to give life to your precious dolls, and take a little of your time to send me pretty cards or sending comments. ¡You don’t know what it means to me! There is wonderful people in this hobby, sharing their talent, their love for dolls and photography, among other things. So I couldn’t be more happy to be part of it. To all those people that want to get started on the hobby and in faceups, I urge you to try, to not be afraid of making mistakes because you can learn so much from them. That is the most important thing in order to improve and see results in your work.

  1. I have been following Raquel Clemente’s work from a distance and I think that she is very talented. I visited her site and looked at the work she has done, having real people and their make up as inspiration and that makes the doll’s face up so much more real.
And as usually, I really like to read about the way the artists and collectors find their way to the hobby. There are so many different ways and when they hit a obstacle, they always find a way to go around, jump over it or even crawl under it. The love for the artistry is so strong.
I really love the work she has done on the Pullip, with the windy eye lids and dandelion seeds. Her workspace is the cutest thing ever.
Thank you for doing this interview! Have a great weekend and a wonderful new month!
