Interview with Popovy Sisters

Hello everybody! It is incredible that the last month passed by so fast, but anyways, today I have a new interview to share with us: Popovy Sisters! I must say personal thanks to Igor, Sisters' manager, for all the help he gave me with the interview.

As always, the text is both in English and Spanish, and all the images are used with permission! Hope you will like this :3

I always start with a classic question: how did you found about BJDs?
It's hard to remember. We think it happen the time when we were students of Ural Academy of Architecture and Art in Ekatyrenburg. We visited one doll exhibition and saw some Japanese BJD. Unfortunately we don’t remember it’s author.

How did you decided to start the BJD brand Popovy Sisters? Also, do you have a workspace to share with us?
This was a logical conclusion for us. At the beginning we were making static dolls, but their body was more and more look like BJD ones, and our last MOD collection had fake ball joints so after that we thought why not to make real BJDs.
Once when we were discussing and sketching our BJD line joints, we’ve heard song of Scissor Sisters and we thought, Why not to call our brand SISTERS?! It’s perfect for us, we’re twins and our dolls are like our sisters, this name has a strong meaning for us and it’s perfect!
We have more freedom with BJD then with static models. Now we can fully concentrate on creating more fashion, more makeup’s. Before it could took us up to around 2 or 3 month just to create static doll body, and then we started to make outfits, that was really time consuming.
Now we feel more like fashion designers who has real models and try different stuff with them :)

How many people work (or does collaborations with) Popovy Sisters?
We do everything concerning doll, outfit’s makeup, prototypes. We cast our molds at Moscow factory Star Dolls, we’re pretty happy with their quality. Dolls have nice weight, very good tension and highest possible resin quality. Also we have person who is responsible for all emails PR and some organizing moments and creating unique music for each collection. It’s Igor, Lena’s husband (here). And one more person who make boxes for our dolls – Misha, Katya’s husband :).

The style offered by Popovy Sisters is really unique and has features that distinguish your dolls from the others. Do you have any motto/meta in mind? Any particular aesthetic idea you wanted to sculpt?
We always making something completely new. Trying to express our vision of beauty. Our protagonist is a child-woman with her imperfections (such as tooth gap and many other small details) and childish character, she doesn’t try to hide or fake her emotions.
Some people ask why our dolls looks so sad? They’re not sad, if you look at many childrens photos you may notice that children there are always serious and kinda sulky. They’re not hiding their emotions. It’s not like those pretty family portraits that you may see on toothpaste or milk commercials :). And that’s how our dolls look like, they’re real. We are trying to convey thoughts and ideas to our audience through our dolls. For us the doll and the costume (outfit or whatever you call it) is something holistic. We’re not thinking about costume as about some different part of the image or doll, for us it’s like the second skin for the doll they’re inextricably linked together. We are looking for sophisticated means of expression. Often we bring animals beauty or some surrounding objects onto female image. We always ask ourselves “is this idea impress us?” if not then we throw this idea away. Our main criterion in image creation – it’s have to be something strange, something weird at the first sight, something that will make one think and something that need to be examined to understand. Doll have to be strange, and make people think.
Siempre hacemos algo completamente nuevo.

The wigs, clothing and styling are not only unique, but gorgeous. I was stunned when I saw the White Rider. How do you come up with these ideas? Is there anything that inspires you?
We found inspiration in everything. Many different things that are not even connected to each other, something that other people just passing by. Also we look for inspiration in history history of art and fashion. Movies, music, photo even computer games! For example, as you know, our last collection ROYALS was inspired by the game of chess.

So far, your releases had only been female dolls. Are you planning on any male doll?
We used to make male dolls in static. At the moment we have no plans to make male BJD, but maybe in future it’ll be interesting for us.

You have won several prizes, and have participated in several Salons. Do you want to share a little of your experience with us?
We enjoy each exhibition and like to travel, it’s also a big inspiration to see new places and different cultures. We like to go out of our closed world :)
For example when we were on the exhibition in Japan, we got so inspired by this country and it’s culture, how it’s connected to it’s history and averall feeling and we desided to make the whole collection out of it, and that’s how our legendary Mod. Collection was born.

Sadly, the BJD hobby is suffering a lot from recasted/bootlegged dolls. What is your statement on this regard?
It will always be obvious and noticeable where is the original and where is fake. And people will always be able to define those who is just copying other peoples ideas. But we believe that true collectors people who respect themselves and know the value of original art will always go for original and unique artists. Talent is something that you can’t fake.
We think that the value of our dolls is not only in molds itself, it’s the whole image, outfits, wigs and ideas. Our outfits are impossible to falsify. We’ve spend many years to develop our own unique technigues and our fashion skills was professionally trained in the best university.
