DoA Triathlon 2015 - Challenge 2: Shoes

Hello everyone! I'm continuing with my DoA's Triathlon series, and this time I want to present the second challenge! This one was a bit of a disappointment to me, but oh well. Here are some links to previous and next entry, which I will update later:

Challenge 2: Cool Kicks

This was the second challenge, and basically consisted on making shoes for the doll. We had one week only to make the shoes, and they had to be done using only paper products, with a budget of $11 total. There was no need to relate the shoes to the wig, nor to use the same doll. You can read the challenge description on this screenshot.

This time I was smarter, and took a screenshot of the voting categories. This is exactly what dissapointed me. The challenge description said that "practicality was not important", that the doll didn't require to be able to stand on the shoes, and on answers to questions it was stated that we should "innovate" and "think out of the box"... and then one of voting categories was the most realistic shoes? It felt like the voting categories didn't match the original description of the challenge, but oh well.

Anyways, my idea was to make shoes that resemble a fern or climbing plant, decorated with butterflies. The shoes must cling to Coco's legs, and she would be watering her own shoes :3 I really liked my idea, to be honest! I made the watering can myself out of cardboard and paper, and since this was a busy working week, I ended up working mostly at night.

I used several origami tutorials for this, mostly on videos, which you can check on the following YouTube playlist. Take in mind one tutorial is in Spanish (it was the best I could find, and has HQ mode) and another one has French labels, but I think that by following the steps they can be easily achieved.

Also, for the small butterflies I didn't cut the tips of the wings, as the video does! I did the big cyan butterflies with a 3x3cm paper, and the smaller were 2x2cm paper. The sakura flowers have each petal made from a 3x3cm paper. The leaves were also 3x3cm papers. I marked and cut them from the A4 sheets I got.

The materials I used for this were thick paper (green, purple and pink) in A4 sheets, thin paper for the origami (pink, orange, red, cyan, green and yellow) that also came in A4 sheets and I cut down, and recycled cardboard for the soles. My tools were a pencil, white glue, scissors and brushes. From the total allowed budget I only used $5,2 to make this.

I had taken some WIP pics to share on this post, but I took them with my phone, and after some issues I had, I lost my photos T_T

I also prepared a small video about the shoes, so you can try to see how big they were! I apologize for the slight hand-shaking of the camera because I tried to film this while holding the camera on my hands instead of leaving it on the tripod... testing things, you see...

So this was all for this second challenge! Thank you so much for reading me and bearing with my post... the last one will be up soon! :D

Also thank you for all the support I got with the wig! Next entry will be the outfit, which is also the last one. Hope you are all doing great!

  2. I like your idea and the shoes you did with it. I think the only problem I see is that when Coco is wearing the shoes there's so much going on that you can't see the actual shoe, but all the decorations (I'm talking about the first picture). Other than that I think it's super original, you did think out of the box and the result is quite vibrant and pretty.

    1. Yup, it was really hard to get to see her feet! I agree with you on that, and this is why I had to take a pic "moving off" the ferns so the inner part with the flowers and butterflies will show.

  4. Debo confesar que admiro tu creatividad. Jamás se me hubiera imaginado hacer zapatos de papel con esas minúsculas maripositas. Han quedado muy bellos. Te felicito.

    1. Thank you!! I liked my crazy idea, although it was as you say: hard to start. I had to discard and start from scratch with this idea, because the previous one didn't work out =S
