Interview With Andreja

Andreja & Jess
I still can't believe this happened! I asked Andreja from Nicolle's Dream Faceups via a PM over Ipernity and she said yes to the interview! *happy dance* She even gave me a lot of pics to post, so each pic you will see on this post, are copyrighted Andreja.

As always, english and spanish (in italic).

Hello! Thank you for accepting the interview.
Hi there! You are very welcome, it is my pleasure :)

¡Hola! Gracias por aceptar la entrevista.
¡Hola ahí! Muchas gracias, es un placer para mí :)

Let’s start with a classic. How did you first found about the BJDs?
I came across BJDs by pure coincidence when I was still living in Europe with my parents. I was browsing the internet, when I stumbled across a photo of Dream of Doll’s Tender Too & Tender Bee-a and it was love at first sight. But since I had no job and was still very young, I could not afford to buy one and quickly forgot about them. Years later after moving to Australia, one of my schoolmates introduced me to the hobby once again and pretty much convinced me to save up money for one :) The rest is history hehe.

Why did you decide to start doing face-ups?
I’ve always been interested in makeup in general, but because my own skin is extremely sensitive I can’t experiment or wear much of it myself. That is why I decided to have some fun by giving dolls a makeover instead :)

Andreja's workshop.

The name of your shop is really cute. Does it has a special meaning? Why did you choose it?
Oh thank you and yes indeed! I named my shop after the very first doll that I painted, my Unoa Lusis called Nicolle. Only people that have been following me from the beginning know about her, she was my main model and a bit of a guinea pig that I used to practice faceups on. She went through countless repaints while I was desperately trying to get more experience by offering free faceups on DoA - with no interest from anyone whatsoever for many months. But I was stubborn and honestly even though my faceups were so amateur, I just loved painting them plus the fact that each one was one of a kind, made it all even more exciting.

Regarding all the face-ups you have done. Do you have any personal favorites? And do you have a most-popular face-up?
I have many favorites for many different reasons XD A recent commission that I am particularly fond of, is the one I did on Luts Bory:

The client put a lot of thought and consideration while developing the concept for the faceup. So in this case it is all thanks to her that the end result ended up looking so good and unique :)
Another favorite of mine is the Monster High Draculaura that I painted a few weeks ago.

MH commissions are special to me because they require me to use my illustration skills to draw the eyes. I find it fascinating how drastically different the same doll looks with different size, shape and style of eyes.
In terms of the most “popular” faceup of mine (the one who received the most views, favorites and comments) it is the one I did for my Minifee Chloe (Jess) in 2010. It is a bit of a funny story if you don’t mind me sharing it. I ordered a Minifee Chloe from Fairyland because I was planning on using the body for a Juri08 head and then selling the Chloe head on the marketplace after painting it. But as soon as I unboxed her, I fell in love and she totally inspired me. It is difficult to explain the feeling because it only happened once, but I immediately started painting her and finished her faceup in just a few hours O_o It was crazy I could not take my eyes of her hehe In the end the one who was put on the marketplace was the Juri08 head. Just a couple of days ago I’ve removed Jess’ faceup. It was a hard decision I won’t lie, but she was becoming difficult to photograph with her chipped eyebrow, cheeks and lips that were caused by my clumsiness. Also my skills and style have changed since 2010 which give me hope to be able to do an even better job than before. As of now I still haven’t repainted her but I hope I can bring her back with a refreshed look and the same personality as before.

Your skills on doing wigs are awesome! Why did you started on it? Do you plan to offer custom wigs in the future?
Thank you very much! Learning how to make wigs has been on my “To do” list for a very long time. The main motivation was born from the frustration of being unable to find wigs in the style, colour and fiber quality that I wanted. Now I can pretty much create anything that I can think of. And on top of that, because I am mostly using alpaca fiber, I can use my straightening iron or curling rod to style the wigs ( I was so happy when I said goodbye to the messy and time consuming technique with boiling water).

At the current stage I do not plan to offer wig commissions. I mean I would love to, it is a fun process and moreover it doesn’t require me to use any nasty chemicals that could seriously harm my health as opposed to painting faceups. But as it is now, the costs of the materials and the time it takes me to create one are too high, so if I was to price it fairly based on the amount of time required to make one, it would be way too expensive. Maybe once I learn of a way to make the whole process faster so that the wigs become more affordable, I’ll be able to consider offering them for sale.

And finally, anything else you want to share with us?
Before I go, I wanted to say thank you to everyone who has supported me and helped me to improve my skills by either commissioning me or commenting under photos of my work or simply subscribing to my social sites. I get an overwhelming amount of support every day and I really wish I could personally say thanks to each and every one of my followers and get to know them better. At the end of the year I am going back to Europe for 3 weeks and I am super excited to the opportunity of meeting people from the doll community in Paris, London and some other cities that I plan on visiting. It will be amazing and I am super excited!!!!!

Thanks again!
