Happy 3rd Bday Coco!

And I can't believe it, to be honest. Monday May the 9th marked already three years since she arrived, and she is my queen! However, I have come to realize that Coco doesn't like her B-days, because she makes my life impossible regarding this! I have the "B-day dress curse" that implies that all B-day dresses I sew (including my tinies') will look horrid to me at some point, and then when I start to warm up to then, Coco will look ugly with all the backdrops.

For this time I had a very precise idea that, of course, turned terrible. I had to re-do the background for times, and even broke one of my backdrops in the process (the checkered black and white).

Anyways. The thing is that after I did the steampunk dresses I felt capable of doing something nice, and found a specific outfit from a Turkish drama named Intikam that was so Coco I couldn't resist. It is worn by the actress Beren Saat she is so beautiful I can't even, and the dress in question was this tuxedo dress.

I'll leave you with a photo here, and more rambles under the cut, as always!

Well, the tuxedo dress was going nice until I tested it almost before the snaps, and I didn't like it at all! I don't know it felt so plain! So when I dressed her fully, I added some shiny leggings, and the pathetic fake pearl necklace I have made last year, and I think the outfit turned nicely. Surprisingly, the flap was a fight to do it, but it turned out decent.

After my fight with the backdrops, all the poses were so pathetic! I must confess, I forgot three times to make the slits on the skirt (three!!), and therefore it is really tight and Coco has a very small range of motion on her legs. I was completely blocked, so decided to google the original images of the tuxedo dress, and had an idea: let's do Beren Saat's poses! I attempted to duplicate some of them, and I think I got some nice shots.

And then, when the photos were done, I didn't actually liked them so much, so I said "screw it!" and attempted heavy editing and black-and-white photos. You know, I never do B&W. Last time was for DoA's 2015 Triathlon, and because it was requested. However, I need to thank Tsumo and the people from the Discord BJD chat, because they gave me some nice tips on editing this set!!

However, my original idea was making a banner of glittering letters that said "happy B-day" (I even asked permission to Fantasywoods to do it), but I couldn't make it work. The only picture that I managed with the banner is the following, and it isn't as pretty as the others.

The good thing is that I got two sheets of the glittering foamy -one golden one silver- and I think I got a perfect idea to use the silver one with my tinies. I just hope I don't blew it up like I did with this one. Anyways, hope you are doing great, and have a nice weekend!! :D

  1. Congratulations, Musume! You have captured the essence of the original tuxedo dress beautifully. If you are having trouble making the white lapel lie flat, try taking a few invisible stitches from underneath to anchor the lapel lining to the dress. Then steam iron it until it behaves. Did you use the paper towel and tape method to draft your pattern? I haven't tried that myself but I really want to. So sorry you broke your checkered backdrop. This one works well and the BW photography is very much in keeping with the BW dress.

Oh, and Happy Birthday Coco! My poor dolls don't get birthday celebrations (or special dresses) because I can't remember when any of them arrived.

    1. Thank you!! I think it looks quite similar too :D

Thank you for the advice, but since the dress is made in satin it irons really well. The flat got a little up due to me manipulating Coco's hair and head during the photos.

Yes, I used that method, and then modified the pattern manually. I made the flap pattern by hand.

Maybe you should make Google notifications when you get them, so they will ring a couple days before and you'll remember?

  4. Yay happy birthday to the queen!! I did have dessert and loved it too :D!!! but it was so much sugar that then I was very hyped XD

I think you are putting yourself down too much, you are incredibly talented and the shots came out really nice. I like the way you arranged the bday letters, very unique!! And you can use that idea in the future since you barely used it this time.

    Love all the poses :D

    1. Hahahaha, thank you, but that happened because you didn't share the dessert!! xD

Thank you again, you are too kind. Sad that I broke one of my backdrops, this letters can only be stuck against fabric, but I did learn now =S

  5. Hi Musume,
I love the way you keep challenging yourself. It's one thing to be able to sew, and another thing entirely to create something from concept to fruition, well done! Knowing you and your passion, I'm sure you have also learned something along the way.

    Happy birthday Coco!
    Hugs,
