Interview with YouplaDolls

Hello everybody!! As always, new month means new interview, and this time I had the pleasure of working with YouplaDolls! She is a French artists who makes amazing dolls, so I hope you'll love this interview as much as I did.

As always, it is in both English and Spanish, and all photos were used with permission. So, without further introduction, let's start!!

Hello, and thank you for doing this interview! Hello! Thank you very much, I am happy to share my passion! I'm French, 28 years old, and it is now 2 years since I launched YouplaDolls. I'm the only person behind YouplaDolls ^-^

Do you have any artistic background? How did you find out about BJDs? Yes I have an artistic background : I did graphic design studies (2D only) at Paris and on leaving school I was hired in a video game company. It's in this company that I learned 3D modeling. I immediately loved it, more than the "2D" works ^-^ I found about BJD while searching about collectible dolls. I have some Limited Disney Dolls and I wanted to know more about OOAK dolls. I found some pictures with really realistic make-up on BJD, I immediately wanted to try it !

¿Tienes formación artistica? ¿Cómo conociste a las BJDs? Sí, tengo formación artística: hice estudios de diseño gráfico (sólo 2D) en Paris, y cuando terminé los estudios fui contratada por una compañía de video juegos. Ahí aprendí de modelado en 3D. Me enamoré inmediatamente, más que en los trabajos en 2D ^-^   Encontré las BJDs cuando buscaba muñecas coleccionables. Tengo algunas Limitadas Disney, y quería saber sobre algo más OOAK. Encontré fotos de maquillaje muy realista en BJDs, ¡e inmediatamente quise intentarlo!

How did you start sculpting? And from there, how did you decided to start YouplaDolls? It was a chance coincidence ! Unfortunately the game company has closed after 2 years, and I resumed more standard graphic design. Two years ago, with the arrival of the home 3D printer, I wanted to try to make a doll completely. I already started taking make-up commissions. I missed so much to model in 3D, it was really perfect for me! My first try was a head and after this, Zopa (my first entire doll). Zopa was really well received! A little later I resigned my job to devote myself to YouplaDolls.

¿Cómo comenzaste a modelar? ¿Y desde ahí, cómo decidiste comenzar YouplaDolls? ¡Fue por pura casualidad! Desafortunadamente, la compañía de videojuegos cerró luego de dos años, y continué trabajando en diseño gráfico más estándar. Dos años atrás, con el arribo de una impresora 3D, quise intentar hacer una muñeca entera. Ya había comenzado a tomar comisiones de maquillaje. Extrañaba mucho modelar en 3D ¡y era realmente perfecto para mi! Mi primer intento fue una cabeza, y luego Zopa, mi primera muñeca completa. ¡Zopa fue muy bien recibido! Luego de eso, renuncié a mi trabajo para dedicarme por completo a YouplaDolls.

Your dolls have a very unique aesthetic! What are your goals and inspirations for them? I am glad to know that my dolls are special and recognizable. What I was looking for was creating something that didn't necessarily exist or that I couldn't find. Zopa, who is a 35cm boy, was made in this idea. I wanted a realistic little boy, not baby, a little mischievous and typed. I started from a photo of a little Tibetan monk to create it. Ziya is a bit like the big sister of Zopa, she was made in the same spirit: a special face, smiling, with a little nose a little crushed and eyes more realistic (she wears 8mm)

¡Tus muñecas tienen una estética única! ¿Cuáles son tus metas e inspiraciones para ellas? Estoy contenta de saber que mis muñecas son especiales y reconocibles. Estaba buscando crear algo que no existiera necesariamente, o que yo no pudiera encontrar. Zopa, que es un chico de 35cm surgió de esta idea. Quería un chico realista, no un bebé estereotipado. Comencé con una foto de un pequeño monje Tibetano para crearlo. Ziya es como la hermana mayor de Zopa, y fue hecha en el mismo espíritu: un rostro especial, sontiente, con una nariz un poco apretada y ojos más realistas (ella usa 8mm).

What is your process to make a new doll? Do you have a workplace? I often work on photos of existing people. I look for the characteristics that make that I stopped on this face and I add them on my model. My doll will be very far from the photo because I don't copy all the face, I add the characteristics that I like on several different faces. I never draw before. I'm bad in drawing, and I'm much MUCH more comfortable in 3D :) Once my 3D model pleases me, I print on my home printer the prototype to check that everything works (which is never the case!), I correct, I reprint, until I am satisfied. Once the prototype has been validated, I have it printed by a specialized company to have a nice impression. I sand and surface this 3Dprint until it's ready to be sent to my factory. I have a workplace but it's really too messy to be shown!

¿Cuál es tu proceso para crear una nueva muñeca? ¿Tienes un espacio de trabajo? A menudo trabajo con fotos de personas existentes. Busco las características que hicieron que me detuviera en sus rostros, y las agrego a mi modelo. Mis muñecas son muy distintas de las fotos porque no copio toda la cara, sino que agrego las características que me gustan de cada rostro. Nunca dibujé antes, soy mala para eso, y estoy mucho, mucho más cómoda en 3D :) Una vez que el modelo 3D me conforma, lo imprimo en la impresora de mi casa para asegurarme que todo funciona (¡lo cual nunca es el caso!). Entonces corrijo y reimprimo hasta que estoy satisfecha. Cuando el prototipo fue validado, lo hago imprimir por una tienda especializada que tiene una buena impresión. Lo lijo y aplico el cobertor, hasta que está listo para ser enviado a my fábrica. Tengo un espacio de trabajo, ¡pero realmente está todo muy desarreglado para mostrarlo!

You went to several conventions, as well. Will you share a little of that experience with us? I love the stage of preparing conventions. I choose a theme based on the dolls I present, and I start imagining what I want. In general it is followed by very ugly designs that I never show! I contact people to make clothes (I don't sew at all), I look for accessories, for decoration .. For each convention, I make the make-up on all my dolls. This is the only time you can have a doll with a make-up by me as I completely stopped taking commissions. I also do wigs sometimes. The day of the convention is always stressful, I'm afraid to forget things, not to be understandable for non-French speakers, but it always goes very well and it's always a pleasure.

También has ido a varias convenciones. ¿Compartirías un poco de esa experiencia con nosotros? Me encanta la preparación para las convenciones. Elijo un tema basado en las muñecas que presento, y comienzo a imaginarme lo que quiero. ¡En general, esto es seguido por diseños feos que nunca muestro! Contacto personas que hacen ropa (yo no coso para nada), busco accesorios, decoraciones, etc. Para cada convención, preparo el maquillaje de todas mis muñecas. Esta es la única forma de tener un maquillaje hecho por mi, dado que dejé de tomar comisiones. A veces, también hago pelucas. El día antes de la convención es muy estresante, y estoy preocupada de olvidar cosas, de que los que no hablan francés me entiendan… pero siempre sale todo muy bien, y es un placer.

Have you thought of making other sizes and lines? What are your future plans for your dolls? Yes, you'll see at the next convention a MSD of 45cm that works very well with my MSD Ziya and Vàna. But also a 57cm SD that is currently in the factory! I'm really looking forward to seeing them in resin! I also plan a little girl of 35cm but this one has only one face at the moment.

¿Has pensado hacer otros tamaños y líneas? ¿Cuáles son tus planes a futuro para tus muñecas? Sí, en la próxima convención se verá un chico de 45cm que queda muy bien con Ziya, y a Vàna. Pero ¡también un SD de 57 que está en la fábrica! ¡Realmente espero verlos en resina! También planeo una niña pequeña de 35cm, pero por ahora sólo tiene un rostro.

About your own face-ups: what do you like the most about this? Do you have a favorite style? Yes I like to do make-up for myself or for conventions. On the other hand I stopped the commissions because I don't really have time with YouplaDolls and I prefer to do what I want without following instructions! I work a lot in watercolor, very practical to give a texture to the skin and to make fine lashes. It is also useful because you can remove it with water x) Even if I do make-up a little different from time to time, I think I have a style quite recognizable because I like natural make-ups in warm tones. This is what you find most in my photo album!

Sobre tus maquillajes: ¿qué es lo que más te gusta? ¿Tienes un estilo favorito? Sí, hago maquillajes para mi o para las convenciones. Dejé de tomar comisiones porque realmente no tengo tiempo con YouplaDolls, ¡y prefiero hacer lo que quiera sin seguir instrucciones! Trabajo mucho con acuarelas, porque son prácticas para dar textura a la piel y hacer pestañas finas. También es útil porque se remueve con agua x) Incluso si mis maquillajes varían con el tiempo, creo que tengo un estilo bastante reconocible porque me gustan los maquillajes naturales en tonos cálidos. ¡Es lo que más se encuentra en mi album de fotos!

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us? I would really like to thank all the people who are interested in my work. It's something very personal, time consuming but that brings me enormously joy. And there is nothing more pleasant than to receive satisfied messages from customers. My next convention will be in Paris for the Dolls Rendez-vous in Decemeber where I will present my new creations! There will of course be preorders next year;)
