Interview with Mikiyochii

Hello everybody! It is time for a new interview! This month I had the pleasure of interviewing Mikiyochii, a faceup artist based in Germany who has a very particular style and also works on Pullips and Blythes.

As always, the interview is both in English and Spanish, and all photos are used with permission. So, without further ado, let's start!

Hello and thank you for doing the interview! Would you introduce yourself to our readers? Hello and thank you so much for inviting me to the interview. It's the first time for me being interviewed and I'm happy to get the opportunity. My name is Desirée, but I'm mostly known as Mikiyochii (or short Mikiyo). I live in a small city in the southern middle of Germany, near Frankfurt. Besides my work as a graphic designer, I also paint dolls, read, draw and play online games. I love cute, pinkish and pastel-colored stuff which you can easily see in my doll collection :D

Es la primera vez que soy entrevistada, y estoy muy contenta por la oportunidad. Mi nombre es Desirée, pero me conocen más como Mikiyochii, o Mikiyo como corto. Vivo en una pequeña ciudad en el centro-sur de Alemania, cerca de Frankfurt. Además de mi trabajo como diseñadora gráfica, también pinto muñecas, leo, dibujo y juego juegos online. Me gusta lo lindo, rosadito y cosas color pastel, que pueden ver en mi colección de muñecas.

Let’s start with the basics. How did you got in the doll hobby? How did you find out about BJDs? I got into the doll hobby with Pullip dolls around 2013, which I discovered through Deviantart. I was fascinated by the pictures of doll owners and I loved the way you could customize those dolls, giving them a new wig or just cute clothes. And it was impressive to see what other people created. Some months later, after already collecting a couple of Pullips, I also found out about BJDs in a discussion forum. I loved their more realistic appearance (proportions) and at the same time, they had that cute dollish look which I really adore. I bought my first doll secondhand in a German discussion forum: a Luts KDF with an event head (which I later sold again). And that was the beginning ^_^

Comencemos con lo básico. ¿Cómo entraste en el hobby de muñecas? ¿Cómo conociste a las BJDs? Entré con las muñecas Pullip cerca de 2013, las cuales descubrí a través de DeviantArt. Estaba fascinada por las fotos de dueños y adoraba la forma en que se podía personalizar las muñecas, con nuevas pelucas o simplemente ropa. Y era increíble ver lo que otros creaban. Unos meses más tarde, ya coleccionando algunas Pullip, encontré las BJDs en un foro de discusión. Adoré su forma más realista (las proporciones) y al mismo tiempo tenían la apariencia adorable que me encanta. Compré mi primera muñeca de segunda mano en un foro alemán: una Luts KDF con cabecita de evento (que luego vendí). Y ese fue el inicio ^_ ^

And from there, how did you started offering face-ups commissions? Do you work with slots? I always wanted to create own face-ups. Especially when I got my first BJD (which was faceless). My first face up's were on Monster Highs and tiny Obitsu heads. They didn't look pretty at all but anyway it was very helpful. I got a feeling to paint on a 3D-model and got used to all materials. It's so much more different than painting on paper. After a few face-ups for myself, I got some requests for commissions for Pullip dolls. It was overwhelming to know that there are people who liked your stuff. So I just thought “Why not?”. It was an opportunity to practice more on different dolls and on the same side people were happy for the face-up. What could I wish more for? Now, I'm offering 5-10 face-up slots almost every month on my website within the EU. I created a little shop where you can buy face up's after my announcements and doll stuff. I want to make the ordering process as easy as possible for my customers and myself.

Y desde ahí ¿cómo comenzaste a ofrecer comisiones de maquillaje? ¿Trabajas con espacios limitados? Siempre quise crear mis maquillajes propios. Especialmente cuando conseguí mi primera BJD (que no tenía rostro), mis primeros maquillajes fueron en Monster Highs y pequeñas cabecitas Obitsu. No se venía bonitas, pero fueron muy útiles. Tenía la idea de pintar en modelos 3D, y usar los materiales. Pero es muy diferente a pintar en papel. Luego de un par de maquillajes para mí, me pidieron que pintara muñecas Pullip. Fue sorprendente saber que había gente a la que le gustara mi estilo. Así que pensé “¿Por qué no?” Era una oportunidad para practicar más en otras muñecas, y al mismo tiempo, la gente estaba feliz con sus maquillajes. ¿Qué más podría desear? Ahora ofrezco entre 5~10 maquillajes, casi todos los meses en mi sitio web, dentro de la EU. Creé un shop donde se puede comprar uno de mis maquillajes luego de los anuncios y cosas de muñecas. Quiero hacer el proceso de compra tan sencillo para mis clientes como para mi misma.

Your faceups are so detailed and you also work on a variety of dolls! Which type of doll is your favorite to work on? And the most challenging one? That's so sweet, thank you very much! Yes, I love working on different kind of dolls. My favorites are still Pullips because I got into the hobby with them and they are too cute! But to be honest, there is no real ranking. I love small dolls as well as bigger sized dolls. My face up style is more soft and dollish, that's why I love dolls who don't look too realistic and more like a “doll” - if that makes sense in any way. It doesn't mean that I don't like realistic dolls. But I think my style wouldn't do justice to them – I really don't want to ruin them, haha! And there are so many talented people who can do better realistic face ups than I ever can.

Tus maquillajes son muy detallados ¡y trabajas en una variedad de muñecas! ¿Qué tipo es tu favorito para trabajar? ¿Y el más desafiante? ¡Eso es muy amable, muchas gracias! Sí, me encanta trabajar en distintos tipos de muñecas. Mis favoritos siguen siendo las Pullip ¡porque entré en el hobby con ellas y son muy tiernas! Pero para ser honesta, no hay una escala real. Me gustan las muñecas pequeñas como grandes. Mi estilo es más bien suave y muñequil, y por eso me gustan las muñecas que no se ven demasiado realistas sino más como muñecas… si eso tiene sentido. Esto no significa que no me gusten las realistas. Pero creo que mi estilo no los hace justicia. ¡La verdad es que no quiero arruinarlas, jajaja! Y hay tantas personas talentosas que pueden hacer cosas realistas mejor de lo que yo puedo.

Do you have a workplace to share with us? How do you organize yourself to do face-ups? Yes, I have a little workplace. My bigger dolls are sitting next to my face up materials because I love some cheerleaders at work. And it gives me positive energy and a little smile on my face when I see them. Anyway, I'm a very chaotic girl and it doesn't look very tidy when I work on a face-up. My pencils and brushes are laying all over the table and most of the time I'm searching the right stuff in my mess – the bitter truth. When I start with my commissions I'm not working on only one face up at one time and finish it until I start with the next one. I try to work simultaneously in different steps. There are also moments where I don't work on certain commissions because I don't have the motivation for the head. Sometimes I need several days/weeks to start with the next face up progress, and sometimes I can finish a complete face up in a few days. It really depends on my mood and my time. And for me, creativity is something spontaneous which you can't force or organize. So I just let it go :D

¿Tienes un lugar de trabajo para compartir con nosotros? ¿Cómo te organizas para hacer los maquillajes? Sí, tengo un lugar. Mis muñecas más grandes se sientan cerca de mis materiales porque me gusta tenerlas de apoyo moral en el trabajo. Me dan energías positivas y una sonrisa en el rostro cuando las veo. De todas formas, soy una chica caótica, y no se ve muy bien cuando trabajo en un maquillaje. Mis lápices y pinceles están en toda la mesa, y la mayor parte del tiempo estoy buscando cosas en el lío –la cruda realidad. Cuando comienzo con las comisiones, no trabajo en un maquillaje por vez y busco terminarlo. Yo intento trabajar en varios simultáneamente en distintos pasos. También hay momentos en donde no trabajo en ciertas comisiones porque no tengo la motivación. A veces necesito varios días/semanas para hacer un maquillaje, y puedo completarlo en un par de días. Realmente depende de mi humor. Y para mí, la creatividad es algo espontáneo en donde no puedes forzarte a organizarlo. Así que simplemente lo dejo fluir :D

Are there any materials that are your favorites? Have you changed your supplies over time? My current materials are watercolor pencils from Faber Castell, pastels and some acrylics. Sadly I don't have an airbrush yet but I really want to try it in the future! My favorite part is blushing with pastels, that's why I have plenty of pastels in my box. I tried out different brands, like Schmincke, Rembrandt, and Sennelier. And I recommend Sennelier the most. Their pigments are so vibrant and beautiful. My other materials are still the same since I started with face-ups. But I hope I can improve more with my brushes. I'm still feeling a bit wonky when it comes to drawing fine lines with brushes.

¿Hay algún material que sea tu favorito? ¿Los has cambiado con el tiempo? Mis materiales actuales son lápices Faber Castell acuarelables, pasteles y acrílicos. Lamentablemente aún no tengo un aerógrafo, pero ¡realmente quiero uno en el futuro! Mi parte favorita es trabajar con pasteles, y por eso tengo muchos en mi caja. He probado muchas marcas, como Schmincke, Rembrandt y Sennelier. Y recomiendo Sennelier. Sus pigmentos son muy vibrantes y fuertes. Mis otros materiales siguen siendo los mismos desde que comencé. Pero espero mejorar más con los pinceles. Me siento un poco insegura en lo que respecta a realizar líneas finas con ellos.

On your website, you also offer a variety of accessories, clothes, eye-chips and even shoes for dolls! Do you make them yourself, or is this a partnership? It depends a bit on the items. Some of these, like necklaces and various eye chips, are made by myself, and other items are from European artists, with whom I have a partnership or Chinese artists. I wanted to create a little place where you can buy cute doll stuff in the EU. When the time allows it and I get positive feedback I want to expand my products in the near future. So stay tuned!

En tu sitio web también ofreces accesorios, ropa, eye-chips e incluso zapatos. ¿Los haces tú misma, o es un una colaboración? Depende de los ítems. Algunos de ellos, como los collares y varios chips, son hechos por mí misma. Otros ítems son de artistas Europeos, con quienes colaboro, o artistas Chinos. Quería crear un pequeño lugar donde se pudiera comprar cosas bonitas en la EU. Cuando el tiempo lo permita, y tenga feedback positivo, me gustaría expandir mis productos. Así que estén al tanto!

And what about your own personal doll collection? Do you have a favorite size or brand? I have 7 MSDs, 2 SD and many different tiny dolls which are my favorite size from all. I own 2 bigger dolls but I'm really not into the SD size... it's hard for me to take pictures of them and they are mostly models (really expensive models XD). As I own many Fairyland dolls I would say it's my favorite brand so far. I love their MNF Bodies, their cute look and their fantasy style (I really adore their “last-unicorn-style”-centaur body). But there are many other doll companies which have my attention too, such as Luts, Peakswoods and Little Monica (and obviously many artist dolls *sigh*). Sadly, I'm not following any stories with my dolls. They are … just dolls for me. I really admire people who are telling stories with their dolls. That's something I really admire about the hobby, the creativity, and imagination. But due to my limited time – and maybe my limited imagination xD – I have only my dolls, dressed in their pretty clothes. I just love to see them around me and take pictures of them.

¿Y qué hay al respecto de tu propia colección? ¿Tienes algún tamaño marca favoritos? Tengo 7 MSDs, 2 SD y muchas pequeñas que son mi tamaño favorito de todos. Tengo dos grandes, pero la verdad no me gusta mucho el tamaño SD… es difícil sacarle fotos, y son más que nada modelos (modelos realmente caras). Dado que tengo muchas muñecas Fairyland, diría que es mi marca favorita. Me gustan los cuerpos MNF, su apariencia tierna, y su estilo de fantasía (me encanta su estilo del último unicornio en el cuerpo de centauro). Pero hay muchas otras tiendas que tienen mi atención, como Luts, Peakswood y Little Monica (y obviamente, muchas de artistas *suspira*). Lamentablemente, no sigo ninguna historia con mis muñecas. Para mí… son sólo muñecas. Realmente admiro la gente que cuenta historias con sus muñecos. Es algo que realmente admiro, la creatividad e imaginación. Pero debido a mi tiempo limitado, y quizás imaginación limitada, sólo tengo mis muñecas, vestidas en ropa bonita. Me gusta verlas cerca de mí y sacarles fotos.

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us? If you are trying to work on something creative for your doll, no matter if it's clothing, a face-up or a doll itself: don't worry about failing. Nobody is perfect in the beginning and we all start small. Don't be afraid to fall, but be brave enough to stand up again and to improve your skills. With each mistake, we learn how to do better. If you really like what you do, then don't stop it ^_^ And the most important thing: Have fun with your dolls and don't give drama too much attention. We all have one passion: our dolls and we should share our passion with each other in a friendly way. No hate, no jealousy. Just be happy! And last but not least: I want to thank all my dear followers for their support over the years. I already met a lot of lovely people and without them, I wouldn't enjoy the hobby as much as I do right now. From the bottom of my heart: thank you so much!

Finalmente, ¿hay algo más que te gustaría compartir con nosotros? Si están intentando trabajar con algo creativo con sus muñecas, no importa si es ropa, maquillaje o una muñeca en sí misma, no se preocupen por fallar. Nadie es perfecto al principio, y todos comenzamos desde pequeño. No tengan miedo de fallar, pero tengan coraje para erguirse de nuevo y mejorar sus habilidades. Con cada error, aprendemos a hacerlo mejor. Si realmente les gusta lo que hacen, entonces no se detengan ^_^ Y lo más importante: diviértanse con sus muñecas, y no presten atención al drama. Todos tenemos una pasión: nuestras muñecas, y deberíamos compartirla con todos en una forma amistosa. Sin odio, sin envidia, ¡sólo sean felices! Y al final: quiero agradecer a todos mis seguidores por su apoyo por tantos años. Ya he conocido a muchas personas encantadoras y sin ellos, no disfrutaría tanto del hobby como lo hago ahora.
