Hello! Thanks doing this interview! Would you introduce yourself to the readers?
Hello! Thank a lot for the opportunity to participate in such a wonderful project! My name is Katerina, I'm from Moscow the capital of Russia. For a long time I have been fond of BJD and now I make shoes for dolls, which are called Pupashoes. Shoes in which pupae (butterflies) turn into butterflies!
¡Hola! ¡Muchas gracias por la entrevista! ¿Te presentarías para los lectores?
¡Hola!

Starting with the basics: how did you find out about BJDs and the doll hobby?
In 2006, I was walking around a big toy store in the center of Moscow and saw in the shop window absolutely amazing dolls! They were not like ordinary dolls of the mass market, they had articulated legs and arms, unusual appearance of teenagers with a complex character, and they wore very bright, modern, designer clothes. They were Mooqla, author's dolls of designer Polina Voloshina.
Since then I could not sleep or eat and Mooqla completely occupied my mind. They are not BJD but nevertheless all started with them. On the Internet I found later a forum for the people crazy about dolls. They are adults who talk seriously about dolls, share photos of their favorites, travel with them, sew clothes for them, make wigs, shoes, furniture and so on and so forth! It was awesome! It turned out that I share a lot with many of them! There I learned that there are many different kinds of dolls including some wonderful Asian dolls BJD. Soon I’ve bought my first BJD, Mai from Resinsoul and I started to sew clothes, make shoes, glue wigs for her and then take photos!

You make amazing shoes! Why did you decide to start making them? Did you learned to make shoes by yourself?
Thank you so much! I like to buy BJDs in a "semi-finished" state, unpainted, without clothes, wigs, shoes, eyes. I like to create their makeup, design clothes for them, invent image. In this case a BJD becomes ‘’completely mine''. The first shoes I made according to my taste. Step by step I created my own technology by the method of sampling and errors. The other collectors who saw the photos of my shoes, began to ask whether I could make the same ones for their dolls! It was very pleasant!
¡Haces increíbles zapatos! ¿Cómo decidiste empezar? ¿Aprendiste a hacerlos por tu cuenta?
¡Muchas gracias!

What is your process for making a shoe? Do you have any workspace to share with us?
The fabrics are my main inspiration! I see a piece of cloth and at once I can imagine a design for dresses. I select the color of the lining, ribbons, beads, accessories according to the kind of basic fabric. I construct a pattern on the special pads exactly suitable for a doll foot. I sew up the details of the shoes by this pattern, then pull on the shoe on the pad and impregnate it with the hardening solution. After that the shoes should dry out, and you can proceed to the final touches such as soles and decorative trim. Unfortunately it takes me a pretty long time to create one pair of shoes because everything is made by hand.
I work in the glassed balcony area of our apartment which is very cozy. The large windows overlook the forest and cottages. My cat always helps me in all my affairs he usually monitors the process of working from the chest next to my desk. So, аll my creations pass strict quality inspection.

What BJD sizes do you work for? Is it possible to give you measurements or send you a foot?
Basically I make shoes for the feet of the Minifee Active Line from Fairyland. This is my favorite size. I have ready pads for the feet of the Doll Chateau Kid Doll and ChicLine from Fairyland. Sometimes, when there is enough time I take orders for making other dolls shoes. I need doll’s feet to be sent for me and for an additional fee I make suitable pads.

How do you organize your sales? Do you have stock, or work with commissions?
I usually make shoes in batches and spread them for sale in my Etsy store. On my page in Instagram you can follow the updates. Sometimes the customers ask me to reproduce some models from previous collection and I sent them duplicates.

What is your favorite style of shoe to make? Is there a favorite among your customers?
My manufactures are in a sweet, tender, doll style. Such kinds of shoe models are mainly popular with my customers. When I get bored of making shoes in the same style I’m trying to create something new and diverse.

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
Time is running but my doll hobby is drawing me more and more! My collection grows and replenishes with wonderful dolls of different authors! I'm very happy that the number of people who are so fond of dolls grows. Different exhibitions, meetings, master-classes are held. There are more and more talented authors of BJD! It's great! Recently I have taken a training course on creating a BJD. Now I possess my first personal doll and I hope, later there will be more of them! I also make toys in mixed technique and draw pictures for interior. So I have plenty of creative plans!

  1. Ooh, I love her shoes! Katerina makes some very pretty styles. The crocheted shoes are my favorites and her flowered boxes are pretty enough to display on their own. I love that she makes shoes for MiniFees because those also fit WithDoll girl flat feet and Iplehouse CREAA-J girls. Did she make the dog with the plaid coat? Love him.
