Interview with Depths Dolls

Another interview is here, and we are starting the 7th year of interviews!! Woohoo! Who would have thought that seven years after opening this blog, I would still be here. It is amazing.

Anyways, today I bring you Aurélien from Depths Dolls! He is renown for his anthro dolls like bunny Giorria, or his mermaids. As always, this is in English and Spanish, and all photos were used with permission. So, without further ado... let's start!

Hi there! Thank you so, so much for agreeing to the interview! Will you introduce yourself to the readers?
Hello and thank you for doing this interview!! My name is Aurélien, I’m a French man of 31 years old. Originally from the south of France, I live near Montreal now. My company name is Depths Dolls, because I always have been obsessed with mermaids!

How did you find out about BJDs and the doll hobby? Do you have an artistic background?
First of all, I always loved dolls. When I was little, I played with my sister’s Barbies a lot, and then I asked my parents for mermaid Barbies for Christmas. Growing up, I stopped playing with dolls, but I’ve always loved them. And then around the age of 15 I was looking for fully articulated dolls on Google and I found the word “Dollfie”. After some research, I saw those gorgeous Soo Dark Elf and Lishe from the Luts website, and that’s how I discovered the BJDs. Later I joined the French forum MaterielCeleste, learned a lot about all these dolls, companies and made lots of friends in the doll community.
I don’t have an artistic background. Well, I always loved arts and painting and drawing, but I studied biology, paleontology and scientific communication. All the doll related work is self taught :), and passion of course.
No tengo formación artística.

How did you start sculpting? And from there, how Depths Dolls started?
First of all, when I joined the French BJD community on Materiel Celeste, I learned a lot. Then I had the chance to become friend with Enaibi, a very talented and hard working person. She was one of the first ones to make her own dolls in resin in France. Talking with her, I was complaining that it was impossible to find a cute mermaid BJD that fitted into my aesthetic, and I wanted to have a mermaid doll! And she said “why you don’t sculpt your own mermaid BJD?” and that’s how everything started. She gave me some tips for molding and casting, and she pushed me (and kicked my ass when it was needed) to finish my first prototype: Abyss, a small grumpy mermaid.
After that, I had some requests to make more dolls, some people wanted to have their own Abyss. I made approximately 20 of them all hand casted, and all in unique colors. And I wanted to move to new dolls, make new stuff… and started my second doll! We were talking with Enaibi, trying to find ideas for a company name, and Depths Dolls came. It was fun, because it fitted into the ocean and mermaid theme because of the depths of the oceans, and Abyss was the name of my first mermaid. Depths Dolls was chosen, and since that moment it’s my company name!
My aesthetic for dolls is very French School. Enaibi started to create a silhouette with wide hips, small waist and small thorax, and it became a trend in France. Of course now we have lots of diversity in shapes and sizes because there is lots of talented creators (and friends) of BJD, but this silhouette is widely found in the BJD creators community in France. She is my friend and mentor, so I grew fond of this silhouette, and I’ve adapted it to my own creations. I always loved Fashion Dolls too, and the more I create, the more I feel my dolls are a mix between the fashion dolls aesthetic and the French BJDs aesthetic. Like… Fashion doll inspired but with a fantasy touch or not so realistic face or proportions.
¿Cómo comenzaste a esculpir?
Entonces, ella me dijo: “¿Por qué no te esculpes tu propia BJD sirena?”

You have a lot of anthro dolls, like bunny Giorria or mermaids Deilf and Merrow. What inspired you to do this?
First of all, I’ve always been obsessed with mermaids and fantasy in general. All the fantastic creatures, mythology, legends… and you find anthro creatures in every mythology! I love animals, and I find always funny to mix some animal parts or fantasy features into a doll. I also do regular humans of course!
For Giorria, my bunny girl, at the very beginning it was supposed to be a customization project. I bought years ago a very old and damaged Minifee Lishe, planning to customizing her, sanding and reshaping, dying her, to make a Viera from the Final Fantasy franchise. A kind of warrior bunny girl. Then I dropped this project, and it became a new BJD concept of the bunny girl, but more like a pinup bunny girl with cute and wide feet, and large ears. And Depths from Depths Dolls started to have a new meaning to me, for example the depths of the forest, the depths of the universe, or simply the depths of the imagination.
¿Qué te inspira a hacerlas?

Do you work alone, or do you have a team? Do you have a workplace?
I work alone, and I don’t have any team with me, but my husband can help me sometimes to pack dolls I have to send and usually come with me at the dolls conventions to keep the booth together! But I do all the steps from creating to communication and packing all by myself. I used to work on the coffee table in front of the TV in our previous apartments, but since we moved to a bigger apartment this year I took the second bedroom to make my workplace and office with the computer. So now I do have a little bit more space to put my stuff everywhere and gets messy.
One day we will have a bigger house and I’m planning to have LOTS of place to work :D. People do not always realize that I work alone, sculpting, answering emails, running the website, doing the invoices, painting the dolls, dealing with the casting company, checking all the casted dolls and packing them… it’s a lot of work. Almost all the dolls companies are very small, usually with only one person. Even the well know Asian companies are very small, and people could think they are very big because they are well known, and you can’t directly know who is the creator so they though about a very big company. Also, I do have an other job next to the BJDs, so my free time is to work on dolls. So sometimes it could take a little bit longer for me to do things because of that.

What is your process for designing a new doll? What inspires you?
To create a new doll, for me it starts with sketches. Tons of sketches. Find the idea, find the overall appearance, the joints, the design, the particularities that I intend to put on this doll… Once I have the final sketch, I scan it and modify it on the computer, adjust the proportions and the symmetry. I play with it a little, and then I print it to the final scale I intend to make. I love fantasy and fantastic movies, and arts, and paintings, and reading fantasy… so most of my ideas came from that.
I also love to see dolls, innovative jointing systems, what my friends do and their new sculptures, what known companies do… and all that inspirations kind of mix together to build my own ideas. After I’m fixed on an idea and on a final sketch, I start to sculpt. I tried lots of clays, and tools, and I think it’s very important to experiment different kind of clays and tools to find the ones you’re comfortable to use. Creating a doll takes time, and it’s okay AND normal to make mistakes. LOTS of mistakes.
I work with Apoxy sculpt clay from the brand Aves. It’s kind of expensive and very heavy, but it’s also very, very strong and hard to carve in it once it’s dry. At the beginning I was casting my own dolls, but now I work with professional casting companies in Asia. I send to them the finished prototype and they make molds of it, and send me the resin versions.

Ecume, in progress.

You have attended several doll conventions. Can you share your experience with us? Are there any incoming conventions where people can find you?
I made some doll conventions, in France (Ldoll Festival, Doll Rendez-vous) and in the USA (PNW in Seattle, BJDC in Austin, Resin Rose in Portland…). Every convention is different, but it’s always a very good moment to meet people in real life. Sculpting could be lonesome: you stay in your workplace, you sculpt, you sell through internet, you go to the post office… but conventions are great moments to meet people, and fans! The next convention I’ll go will be the Pacific Northwest BJD expo in Seattle, at the end of April. I didn’t make any plans to go to others conventions yet, I still have to figure what to do.
Has atendido varias convenciones de BJDs. ¿Puedes contarnos tu experiencia?

You have a very wide range of sizes, but all of your dolls are females for now! Are you considering making male dolls or any new anthros? What are your future plans?
Okay so there is TONS of plans I’m working on right now, and I’m trying to stop adding new projects to the list! Soon I’m doing preorders for my new MSDs, Lichen (the elf one), Ume (the Asian girl) and Draugr (vampire lady). I worked on new prototypes made with 3D sculpting on Zbrush, so there is MSD sized girls and also Barbie size girls. I’m also working on a bigger Giorria, the bunny girl, that will be around 30 centimeters, and Freyja, a new lynx girl, in the same range of size. I also want to make a new MSD mermaid, and an MSD centaur, fairies… And later a 60 centimeters girl! I’m thinking more and more about doing a male doll, so I will probably make a 40 centimeters male doll in the future too. I’m still thinking about ideas for him, something androgynous, but yes, male dolls will probably appear at Depths Dolls.
¿Has considerado hacer hombres o nuevos antros?

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
I would like to thank all the fans and people who support my work. If I’m able to make all those dolls today it’s because you guys believed in me and my creations, and you went home with a piece of resin! Of course I love to make BJDs because it makes me happy to do it, but it’s awesome to know that my work, my dolls, could bring happiness to other persons.
But today there is a huge problem in our doll community: it’s the recast problem. I want to tell everyone that recast IS a problem. As I told you, there are no very big companies in the BJD industry, most of them are very, very small. When you take a year to sculpt your doll, invest time, lots of money, and you plan to release your creations to others, it’s a huge risk now. Because plenty of people don’t realize they are stealing those creations when they buy a recast, and some of them are directly involved and send original dolls to recasters.
Recasted dolls ARE counterfeited dolls, illegal dolls, and they are very, very harmful to the creators and this community. Creators need collectors to buy legit dolls only, and collectors need creators to make new dolls and let this hobby be viable. Without creators, and without collectors, there will be no doll community, no BJD industry…

  5. It really is amazing, 7th year! Congrats! And as always, thank you for another great interview.

Aurélien has an interesting story from the time with his sister’s dolls to making an own BJD. A feel a lot of passion and when someone has that kind of passion, they really put their soul in the work. Amazing to be so all self taught! And it is always important with support from the loved ones, when working alone.

Giorria is totally in my taste, cute and fierce.
