Interview with Shaiel

Hello everybody, hope you are doing great! Today I bring another interview, and I'm ecstatic about interviewing the talented Shaiel. She makes incredible face-ups, and I'm sure your jaw will drop with each photo, as mine does all the time!

As always, all photos are used with permission. You can read the interview in both English and Spanish, so here we go.

Hello and thank you for doing the interview! Would you introduce yourself to our readers? Hello! My name is Katarzyna ‘Shaiel’ Grzywacz. Im am artistic photographer, blacksmith and now also a farmer :D Year ago i was living and working in photography corporation in capital city of Poland. With my husband we decided to change our scenery and moved to the countryside by the lake Ińsko near Stargard. This year we will finish our home and get farm animals – like goats, chickens maybe pair of horses. I love animals. Now we have three dogs and a cat. But I´m also helping stray cats and dogs in near town.

¡Hola y gracias por aceptar la entrevista! ¿Te introducirías a los lectores? ¡Hola! Mi nombre es Katarzyna ‘Shaiel’ Grzywacz. Soy una fotografa de artística, herrera y ahora también granjera :D Años atrás estaba viviendo y trabajando en una corporación en la ciudad capital de Polonia. Con mi esposo decidimos que queríamos un cambio de paisaje y nos mudamos alejados, cerca del lago Ińsko en Stargard. Este año terminamos nuestro hogar y obtuvimos animales de granja –como cabras, pollos y quizás un par de caballos. Amo los animales. Ahora tenemos tres perros y un gato. Pero tambien ayudo a los gatos y perros callejeros cerca del pueblo.

Let’s start with the basics. How did you discover BJDs? Do you have an artistic background? I discovered BJDs about 13 years ago. First time I saw one of them on my friend’s Deviantart account. It was a Narae doll. She looked so different and fragile, so as a photograper i started thinking about getting one to help me with portaint photography, since I didn´t like to work with humans – they never behave like I wanted and hated the final photos. I saved enough from part time job, and bought one for myself. The waiting was torture! Its still is ;) I have artistic background. I was attending High School of Artistic Crafts and finished with title of Artistic Blacksmith. Next i attended post-secondary school – Art Studio and finished with title Artisctic photographer. College was not important and generally was a mistake :) . Recently I finished next school and passed exams to become farmer.

Empecemos por lo básico. ¿Cómo descubriste a las BJDs? ¿Tienes formación artística? Descubrí las BJDs cerca de 13 años atrás. La primera vez que vi una de ellas, fue en la cuenta de DeviantArt de una amigo. Era una Narae. Se veía tan diferente y frágil, así que como fotógrafa empecé a pensar en comprar una para ayudarme con mis portaretratos, ya que no me gustaba trabajar con humanos –nunca se comportan como quería, y odiaba las fotos finales. Ahorré lo suficiente con un trabajo de medio tiempo, y me compré una para mi. ¡La espera fue una tortura! Aún lo es ;) Tengo formación artística. Estaba atendiendo la Escuela de Manualidades Artísticas, y terminé con el título de Herrero Artístico. Luego, atendí mi segunda escuela post-secundaria –un Estudio de Arte, y me gradué como Fotógrafa de Artística. La univerdad no fue importante, y por lo general un error :) Recientemente terminé la siguiente escuela, y pasé los exámenes para ser granjera.

Your face-ups have so much texture! How did you start offering face-ups commissions? Do you work with commission slots? Thank You! I love the texture as well. I started painting BJDs instantly when I got my first blank doll in 2009. My first first doll - Narae had company makeup :) I was scared a little in the beginning of they fragility. With next doll i was not afraid anymore and wanted to paint on her! I really liked that I can make the doll face look different every time. That this blank face may have any emotions you want her to have. I really like that. My first makeups weren’t so great, but with time, hard work, experiments, learning from my own mistakes , I've get better and finally decided to share my passion with others. It was about 1,5 year later when I acccepted my first makeup commision. People asked much earlier but i didnt have confidence. I generally work with commision slots but dont have the month limit. Anyone who sends me an email will get a slot.

¡Tus maquillajes son muy detallados y tienen mucha textura! ¿Cómo comenzaste a ofrecer comisiones de maquillaje? ¿Trabajas con slots? ¡Gracias! Yo también amo la textura. Empecé a pintar las BJDs instantáneamente cuando compré mi primera muñeca en blanco en 2009. Mi primera muñeca, Narae, tenía el maquillaje de la tienda :) Al principio estaba un poco asustada de su fragilidad. Con la siguiente muñeca ya no estaba asustada y quería pintarla. Realmente me gustaba poder hacer la carita diferente en cada momento. Que ese rostro en blanco pudiera tener las emociones que le dieras. Me gusta eso. Mis primeros maquillajes no eran tan increíbles, pero con el tiempo, trabajo duro, experimentos y aprender de mis errores, mejoré y decidí compartir mi pasión con otros. Un año y medio después acepté mi primera comisión. La gente me había preguntado mucho antes, pero no tenía confianza. Generalmente trabajo con slots de comisión, pero no tengo un límite mensual. Todos los que me mandan un email, obtienen un slot.

You also work on Pullips and Blythe! Do you also mod them? I work on Pullip and Blythe dolls. I have one Blythe I experiment on, but for commisions I make small modyfications only, nothing advanced – I dont have professional tools for drilling in plastic. Heads must be shippied to me and then I need to know what make on her/his face. Blythe and Pullip commisions forms are not so different. It may take a little longer to paint them because I need more time to remove their old makeup from all parts, especially fragile eyelids.

También trabajas en Pullips y Blythes. ¿También haces modificaciones? Trabajo con Pullips y Blythe. Tengo una Blythe en la que he experimentado, pero en encargos solo hago pequeñanas modificaciones, nada avanzado. No tengo las herramientas para taladrar el plástico. Las cabezas tienen que ser enviadas a mi, y entonces se qué es lo que tengo que hacerle en el rostro. Los formularios para comisiones de Blythe y Pullip no son tan diferentes. Puede llevarme más tiempo pintarlos, porque necesito más tiempo para quitar toda la pintura anterior, especialmente en los párpados tan frágiles.

Do you have a workplace to share with us? How do you organize to do face-ups? Here is my current workstation and temporary home we live in + our nearly finished house. Right now We live on our land in english summer house and waiting to our house to be build <3 .="" 142="" :="" aaaaall="" all="" amazing.="" and="" bird="" birds.="" br="" but="" cienne="" concert="" day="" have="" here="" i="" in="" is="" landscape="" live="" music="" nature2000="" of="" painting="" park="" part="" sko="" species="" we="" which=""> Before I even start doing makeup which is coating it two times with MSC I wash them carefully and check the weather and humidity. Not every humidity is good for coating or even painting. Too high humidity and MSC may crack and peel of. When is too dry MSC may stick too weak to surface. Next I sit to work. I always consider what shape of lips, eyebrows will be best. What shade of pastels to use + of course what the commissioner want – its most important. Sometimes person who send me his doll dont know what makeup they want, so I only need eye colour or wig I will make my magic :)

¿Tienes un espacio de trabajo para compartir con nosotros? ¿Cómo te organizas para hacer los maquillajes? Aquí está mi estación de trabajo y casa temporal en la que vivimos, más nuestra casa casi terminada. Ahora mismo, vivimos en nuestra tierra pero en una casa inglesa de verano, mientras esperamos que terminen la casa principal. Pero pintar aquí es increíble. Todo el día tengo música de los pájaros, que es parte de Nature2000 y de Ińsko Landscape Park que tiene más de 142 especies de pájaros. ¡Concierto todo el día! Antes de hacer el maquillaje, sello todo dos veces con MSC y lavo la cabeza cuidadosamente, y luego reviso el clima y la humedad. No todas las humedades son buenas para sellar o pintar. Demasiada humedad y el MSC se puede pelar o craquelar, y cuando está muy seco, puede no adherirse a la superficie. Luego me siento a trabajar. Siempre considero qué forma de labios y cejas serán las mejores. Qué tonos de pasteles usar y qué quiere el dueño –eso es lo más importante. A veces la persona que me lo envía no sabe qué maquillaje quiere, así que simplemente necesito color de ojos o peluca, y hago mi magia :)

You also take amazing photos! Do you enjoy photography? What is your setup? Thank You so much! It really give a lot of pleasure knowing my photos are liked! I usually use only natural light, sometimes I use photographic blende for more light on faces. I especially love light bokeh – but I always seek it natural. Mostly my photos are spontaneous. I dress up doll as I have mood for and go out with her and camera. Next a little simple photoshop adjustments like brightness and contrast and the photo is done. I never liked big sessions with a lot of photos. 1 to 3 is enough for view. I think this way viewer isnt bored :) I use DSLR + manual prime lens. I love 50mm prime lens by Carl Jenna – they make the best bokeh.

¡También sacas unas fotos increíbles! ¿Disfrutas la fotografía? ¿Qué cosas usas? ¡Muchas gracias! ¡Realmente me da mucho placer saber que aprecian mis fotos! Usualmente solo uso luz natural, pero a veces uso un difuminador para tener más luz en el rostro. Me encanta el bokeh –pero siempre intento que sea natural. La mayoría de mis fotos son espontáneas. Visto mis muñecas cuando estoy de humor y voy a sacar fotos con mi cámara. Luego son un poco de ajustes en el Photoshop, como brillo y contraste, y listo. Nunca me gustaron las sesiones grandes con muchas fotos. Una a tres son suficientes para verdad. Creo que así no se aburre el espectador. Uso una DSLR y un objetivo prime manual. Me encanta el 50mm de Carl Jenna –hacen los mejores bokeh.

Do you have a personal favourite among your face-ups? And a most popular face-up? Yes! I love gold flakes and add gold paint to dolls everywere I can. I especially like this effect on photos. Its bring forth more bokeh and more light. Most popular? I dont think so, everyone seek something different in my work. And I always trying to add something new to my makeups.

¿Tienes un favorito personal entre tus maquillajes? ¿Y uno preferido por el público? ¡Sí! Me encantan los detalles en dorado y le agrego dorado en las muñecas donde puedo. Especialmente me gusta este efecto en las fotos. Trae más bokeh y más luz. ¿El más popular? No lo se, cada uno busca algo diferente en mi trabajo. Y yo siempre intento agregar algo nuevo a mis maquillajes.

And what about your own personal doll collection? Do you have a favourite size or brand? In total I had many dolls, remember each one of them. But now I have constant of seven dolls. Never had family photo, because every doll is different and together they look strange. Every each of them doesnt have personal style, I dress them as I seem fit at the moment. I make them wigs from alpaca fur. I dye and style it myself. Sometimes I sew them new clothes – dresses. I also never bothered with the stories for them. For me dolls are artistic object on whom I train makeup on, make photos, makeups, wigs and clothes.

¿Y qué nos cuentas de tu colección personal? ¿Tienes un tamaño o marca favorita? En total tuve muchas muñecas, recordándolas a todas. Pero ahora tengo una constante de siete. Nunca saqué una foto familiar, porque cada una es muy diferente y juntas se ven extrañas. No tienen estilos personales, las visto como me parece en el momento. Les hago pelucas de alpaca, la tiño y estilizo yo misma. A veces les coso nueva ropa –vestidos. Nunca me importaron sus historias. Para mí, son objetos artísticos en los que entreno el maquillaje, saco fotos, hago pelucas y ropa.

Let’s go back to face-ups. Are there any materials that are your favourites? Have you changed your supplies over time? Generally I always use Pastels Koh-i-Noor, Faber-Castell, Volks and Faber-Castell water pencils. Acrylic paint I use only when I have to. Everything I paint is only in pastels, even eyebrows and eyelashes- I add a little water – thats my style. I use Mr. Super Clear without UV cut (Uv cut tend to yellow in time and I hate it), Tamiya x-22 Gloss, and my favorite: Pearl Ex Powder Pigments. I often change my brushes because they getting dull with use. I always use the same pastels,the same brand of brushes, varnish and gloss.

Volvamos a los maquillajes. ¿Hay materiales que sean tus favoritos? ¿Has cambiado los materiales con el tiempo? Generalmente, siempre uso pasteles Koh-i-Noor, FaberCastell, Volks y lápices acuarelables FaberCastell. Acrílico uso sólo cuando necesito. Todo lo que pinto es sólo con pasteles, incluso las cejas y las pestañas. Agrego un poco de agua, ese es mi estilo. Uso MSC sin UV cut, porque tiende a amarillear con el tiempo y lo detesto. Gloss Tamiya X-22, y mi favorito: pigmentos Pearl ExPowder. A menudo cambio mis pinceles proque se ponen feos del uso. Siempre uso los mismos pasteles, la misma marca de pinceles y barnices.

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us? I was never was big with words and amount of them. I prefer actions, hard work and art :D So my interview may be short but I hope my work speaks more than my words. Finalmente ¿hay algo más que te gustaría compartir con nosotros? Nunca he sido muy expresiva ni buena con las palabras. Prefiero acciones, trabajo duro y arte :D Así que mi entrevista puede ser corta, pero espero que mi trabajo hable más que mis palabras.
