Interview with HopeEyes

Hello everybody! New month is here again, and thus we have a new interview! Today we feature Vy the artist of HopeEyes. She makes stunning urethane, hand'made eyes for BJDs. And even more awesome, today is her b'day!

As always, all photos are used with permission, and the interview is in English and Spanish. Let´s start!

Hi there! Thank you for doing the interview! :D
Hello, thank you so much for having me. My name is Vy and I’m a BJD eye-maker for Hope Eyes. I’m located in the US but I came here from Vietnam 7 years ago, so please excuse my English. I’m currently a college student graduating hopefully this Fall 2020, so eyes making has been my part-time occupation.
¡Hola! ¡Gracias por hacer la entrevista! :D

General question first: How did you start in this hobby?
I believe the first time I ever heard about BJD was when I stumbled upon Dream of Doll at least 9+ years ago. I remember DoD Homme Ducan was my biggest crush, and I was so determined to have him that I saved up all of my allowance money for years, but of course, I had to give up in the end because he was expensive for a student. Even to this day, I still remember the price of Ducan’s full set and shipping fee. When 2017 came along, I saw a BJD post appeared on my newsfeed which brought back all the fond memories. That’s when I re-explore the hobby and got my very first doll: Ringdoll Hui - Warlock Apprentice in 2018.

You make amazing handmade eyes! What inspired you to start? Do you have any workplace to share with us?
The reason why I started making eyes was because of Hui. He has an 18-7mm eyes size and at the time, nobody offered the size and style I’m looking for. So I decided to jump into eye-making at the beginning of 2019, and here we are. I spent one whole year learning and practicing, as I have never worked with resin before. My initial workspace was a tiny glass table with a width of two palms, but I have moved on to a much bigger table now, so I’m very happy and productive with my new workspace. On my work table, you can see all the pigments, glitters, rhinestones collections, and wood stamps for my packaging.
¡Haces increíbles ojos! ¿Qué te inspiró a empezar?

You offer a lot of styles for your eyes! What can you tell us about them? Do you work by stock or accept commissions?
At the moment, my main styles are fantasy, glitter, and rhinestones. I called them the “Bubble Line” where I hand-sculpted the iris and used at least three pigments to blend and create the ombre effect for the eyes, then I decorated it with rhinestones and glitters. They are available from sizes 12mm up to 18mm. Unfortunately, I don’t accept commission. I usually open a pre-order with limited slots because I’m still busy with my school work. In the future, I’m considering selling eyes in stock so it’s easier for everyone to purchase.
Desafortunadamente, no acepto encargos.

Among your eyes, is there a style that is your favorite? Why?
My favorite style is realistic which I have been practicing for a while now. The reason why is because a realistic iris is very intricate and it requires a steady hand, along with proper techniques to mix colors that resemble real human eyes. I haven’t been able to master it, that’s why it’s my favorite because it’s such a huge challenge. The closest I can do right now is this semi-realistic eye. The striate is closer to my liking but there’s still a long way to go with colors.

Finally, is there anything more you would like to share with us?
I would like to give a huge thank you to my friends and everyone who has been a great support ever since day one. I was an anxious mess and afraid of selling eyes, but all of your kind words and advice have comforted me as a newbie to continue to become better. I greatly appreciate each and every one of you, and I promise to be less lazy, open pre-order more often, and stop hibernating every time I’m done with the order, haha.
Also, if this interview is posted on August 1st, it’s my birthday today, what an amazing coincidence.

Thank you for doing the interview! :D
Thank you very much, it is a pleasure to interview with you, and thank you to everyone who read this. Please stay safe during this challenging time and be happy. Lots of Love.

  1. Her eyes are gorgeous! I wish she made some smaller sizes so that my dolls could have some. I would imagine they would be harder to make. Maybe some time in the future?

    1. I know!! Yeah, I have interviewed other eye makers with smaller eyes, and they are apparently very hard to make and less detailed as well. But she is adding more sizes, though!
