Interview with SKCouture

Hello everybody! New month is here, and I can assure that time is flying. Anyways, let me introduce you to Sophia from SK Couture. You probably know her from the amazing roller skates for dolls that she makes.

Hello! Thanks doing this interview! Would you introduce yourself to the readers? Hi, I’m Sophia, co-founder of SK Couture. We established our brand in 2009. We came from China. We specialize in miniature doll shoes, bags, clothes, and furniture. We had our gold label shoes in 2016. It is our premium line, which focuses more on the design and details. We have gemstone shoes, rococo shoes, roller skates, canvas sneakers, and many more under the gold label line. A lot of customers love our work, which make us proud and full of gratitude.

¡Hola! ¡Gracias por aceptar la entrevista! ¿Te presentarías a los lectores? Hola, soy Sophia, co-fundadora de SKCouture. Establecimos nuestra marca en 2009. Somos de China. Nos especializamos en zapatos, bolsos, ropa y muebles en miniatura. Teníamos nuestros zapatos de línea dorada en 2016. Es nuestra lína premium que se enfoca más en el diseño y los detalles. Tenemos zapatos con gemas, estilo rococó, patines, zapatillas, y mucho más, bajo esta línea. A muchos clientes les encanta nuestro trabajo, lo que nos hace muy orgullosos y nos llena de gratitud.

Starting with the basics: how did you find out about BJDs and the doll hobby? We started making Barbie and Fashion Royalty doll shoes in 2009. I continued my postgraduate degree, Master of Science in Marketing in City University of Hong Kong by then. I loved handmade stuff. I had participated in a lot of handmade markets in Hong Kong, selling my designed birthday cards and bookmarks. And one day I browsed eBay and happened to know a local designer who designed shoes for Fashion Royalty dolls and Barbie. It was amazing. I never saw these miniature shoes before, and they were so gorgeous! It interested me a lot! After that, my idea of making my own designed miniature shoes often occurred to me. So I attended shoes designs classes, leant how to design shoes, and make it into reality. My enthusiasm of design miniature shoes never ended. I talked to my partner, who is a well-known graphic designer in China, and he totally encouraged me to go for it. And we founded a team, and then the studio. We design doll shoes and other stuff together. It’s so fun! And now, it’s 11 years since we made doll shoes, fashion and other doll related works.

Comenzando con lo básico: ¿cómo conocieron las BJDs y el hobby de muñecas? Empezamos a hacer ropa para Barbie y zapatos para muñecas Fashion Royalty en 2019. Contiué con mi título de posgrado, una Maestría en Ciencia de Mercadeo en la Universidad de la Ciudad de Hong Kong. Adoro las manualidades. Había participado en muchos mercados de manualidades en HongKong, vendiendo tarjetas de cumpleaños de diseñador y señaladores para libros. Y un día, estaba navegando eBay y encontré un diseñador que hacía zapados para Fashion Royalty y para Barbie. Era increíble. ¡Nunca había visto estos zapatos en miniatura y eran hermosos! ¡Me interesó mucho! Luego, se me ocurrió que yo también podría hacer eso. Así que tomé clases de diseño de zapatos y lo hice realidad. Mi entusiasmo para diseñar zapatos nunca terminó. Hablé con mi pareja, que es un diseñador gráfico bastante conocido en China, y me apoyó mucho. Así que fundamos un equipo y luego el estudio. Diseñamos zapatos para muñecas y otras cosas juntos. ¡Es muy divertido! Y ahora, ya han pasado 11 años desde que empezamos a trabajar en zapatos de muñeca y otras cosas para ellas.

What doll sizes do you work for? Blythe, 1/8BJD, 1/6BJD, and MSD size. We began to develop in Obitsu 11 size since 2016.

¿Con qué medidas de muñecas trabajan? Trabajamos con Blythe, BJDs 1/8 y 1/6, y tamaño MSD. Comenzamos a trabajar con Obitsu 11 desde 2016.

What is your process for making a shoe? Do you have any workspace to share with us? Our inspirations come from the latest fashion trend, and sometimes some unique fabric, patterns would give us inspirations too. Some customers would also E-mail us and give us suggestion on the design of the shoes, or what they want, which we really appreciate. We just moved into a new studio. Everything is still in process. Here is a quick look of our studio:

¿Cuál es tu proceso para hacer zapatos? ¿Tienes un espacio de trabajo para compartir con nosotros? Nuestras inspiraciones vienen desde la última tendencia de la moda, y a veces por una tela única o estampados que nos inspiran. Algunos clientes nos envían emails y nos sugieren qué hacer respecto a un diseño particular o lo que les gustaría; esto es algo que valoramos mucho. Nos acabamos de mudar a un nuevo estudio. Todo está en proceso, pero aquí hay una rápida mirada:

How do you organize your sales? Do you have stock, or work with commissions? We take preorders in our Etsy shop. Before that, we will reveal the sneak peeks in our Instagram and our Twitter. We also have our worldwide authorized dealers, Junie Moon from Japan and DollPeddlar from US. Customers can also purchase our works from their websites and off-line shops. Sometimes you can find our works there which is no longer available in our shop. We attend some events too. We had participated in Doll paradise in Beijing, IDoll in Tokyo, Dolltopia in Thailand, Dollvie in Hongkong, etc. We have received some much love from the doll events.

¿Cómo organizan las ventas? ¿Tienen stock o trabajan a comisión? Tomamos encargos en nuestra tienda de Etsy. Antes de eso, mostramos algunos avances en Instagram y Twitter. También tenemos vendedores autorizados por el mundo, como Junie Moon en Japón y DollPeddlar en USA. Los clientes también pueden comprar nuestros trabajos desde sus sitios web y sus tiendas offline. A veces pueden encontrar nuestro trabajos ahí, si ya no están disponibles en nuestra tienda. También atendemos eventos. Hemos participado en “Doll Paradise” en Beijing, IDoll en Tokyo, “Dolltopia” en Tailandia, “Dollview” en Hong Kong, entre otros. Hemos recibido mucho amor en estos eventos.

What is your favorite style of shoe to make? Is there a favorite among your customers? I could bet it is the amazing roller skates! I like all the vintage elements, pearls, bowknot, silk, lace, and so on. However, SK Couture is not restricted to one style. We also make some sporty shoes, like the latest canvas boots. Many customers may know us from the roller skates we released in 2017. It was fun to make the skates. We worked very hard on them. After revising for many times, we got the satisfied design. The image below is the confirmed version of our roller skates, sample from 2017. Some customers tell us that the roller skates recall their childhood memories, and their dreams to let their dolls wear a pair of roller skates have come true. This means so much to us. Beside the shoes design, I would like to mention our packages. We work hard on the packages too. Each style of the shoes has their unique package. We want our customers to feel our work before opening it.

¿Cuál es tu estilo favorito de zapatos? ¿Hay algún favorito entre tus clientes? ¡Apuesto a que son los patines! Me gustan todos los elementos vintage, como perlas, moñitos, seda, encaje y demás. Sin embargo, SK Couture no se limita a un estilo. Hacemos zapatos deportivos, como las botas de lienzo. Muchos clientes nos conocen por los patines que sacamos en 2017. Fue divertido hacerlos, y trabajamos muy duro en ellos. Luego de revisarlos varias veces, quedamos convencidos con el diseño. La foto de abajo es la muestra que nos convenció en 2017. Algunos clientes nos dicen que los patines los hacen pensar en su infancia y que sus sueños de dejar que su muñeca use un par finalmente se hicieron realidad. Pero aparte del diseño de zapatos, me gustaría mencionar nuestro empaquetado. Trabajamos muy duro en los paquetes también. Queremos que nuestros clientes sientan nuestro trabajo antes de abrirlo.
