Photo Challenge: Music

Some time ago, OrchidDolls shared this doll photography challenge. As always, I was overworked and couldn't participate. I don't like these challenges because taking a new photo every day is stressfull for me -especially because it is very dark when I finish work, and then I'll hate the photos I get. No point at all, then.

So I decided to do it at my own pace, to take pictures of the topics that inspire me. My idea is to share a single picture, and share the specs I used to take the photo, as well as the before & after. Something I never do. Who knows? Maybe this way it is going to be more interesting for me.

So, the topic I chose was #10: Music. I had recently shared some photos of my dragons playing with the sylvanian instruments, so I didn't want to repeat myself. I was wondering what I could do, looking at the topics, when I saw my partner's headphones.

These are very special headphones and, as you can guess from the photo, they are huge. So I imagined Cookie and Merry wrestling with human tech, and then being blow out with the sheer volume of those headphones. I ended up doing something simple, with Cookie trying to cover her ears (but her arms are too short for that!).

For this photo, I used the following settings and gear:
  • Camera: Sony a6400 (crop sensor, mirrorless camera).
  • Lens: Minolta MD 58mm ROKKOR, with MD-to-SonyE adapter. This is a vintage, manual only lens, and it is glorious.
  • Specs: ISO 100, shutter speed 1/15 sec (with tripod), at f2.8, manual focus.

And as promised, below is the before and after. Should I keep doing this? Do you like this type of posts? I dare you do the same, take it at your own pace, then  share the before and after!

  1. This is a fun challenge--as long as someone else is doing it. Is the "before" the photo you actually took and the "after" the same photo after editing? If so, it would be nice to know what software you used to edit and which software features you used to make the changes. For us low-tech types with automatic cameras--or who don't know how to use the features our cameras do have--everything is in the editing.

    1. Yes! There was a lot of people in Instagram/Twitter doing it. I just decided to tag alone late.
Of course, the "before" is the real before of the photo. It wouldn't make sense to label it before if it wasn't.
I shoot in RAW, I use Lightroom. You can get some basic free presents for it as well!

  2. I am with you there as far as the challenges are concerned. Great editing and very cute picture. It's amazing how much more detail you achieved with the head phones. I am always a bit afraid of editing my pictures, my monitor might show something completely different than others.

    1. Thank you so much!! Yes, the headphones came out very detailed!
The monitor thing may be because of the type of panel inside the monitor. If you have IPS, then probably it is brighter. You'll need to see what it is first.

  3. I took part in a challenge like this once and I managed to take all 30 photos in 30 days. But it was a looooot of work. I'm sure I won't try it again. Ever. xD

I like the photo with headphones very much. Your skills in editing are amazing. :)

    1. I know, right? That is why I am taking this slowly. Very slowly. Otherwise, it feels like a chore!

  4. I love challenges like this, but as you wrote - it is better to take it slowly or it get so overwhelming otherwise.
I joined one of these challenges on Instagram some years ago, it was fun!
I like the photo above a lot and it is amazing how much difference there can be - the headphones are so sharpe in the after photo. Great work!

    1. I agree, taking one pic per day is not realistic for some people. Happy that you liked my photo!
