Interview with AirimirOfGondor

Hello everybody, it is time for another interview! Please, welcome Lydia, also known as AirimirOfGondor. She is based in the USA and makes repairs for BJDs. Also, she is starting her own BJD brand, Arbordoll. As always, the interview is both in English and Spanish, and all photos are used with permission. Enjoy!

Hello! Thank you for doing this interview! Will you introduce yourself to the readers?
Hello there! Thank you very much for interviewing me! My name is Lydia, I go by AirimirOfGondor online. (Pronounced AIR-ih-meer) I live in Pennsylvania, in the USA. My favorite color is blue, and I am a Virgo. XD
¡Hola!

How did you find out about BJDs and the doll hobby?
I first learned about BJDs while I was in college. I had met a friend through the school's anime club, and she had a few of them. I would always commandeer one of them while we were hanging out! It didn't really take long before I saved up for my first doll.

You are a jack-of-all-trades, master of modifications and repairs. How did that happen?
I first started doing faceups in about 2010. At first I just wanted to try it out for myself to paint my own dolls, then once I started to get better at it, I felt more comfortable with accepting commissions. I had originally wanted to get good enough at faceups to be as popular as Andreja, AngelToast, Eludys, and the like. I'm not there yet for the faceups, haha! But at one point I realized that I was seeing a lot of people looking for someone to modify a doll. I started offering a few free or very cheap commissions for mods, until I wasn't scared about possibly damaging someone else's doll anymore. These days it seems there are a lot of faceup artists out there, but not as many people who offer modding, so I wanted to offer a service that seemed to be lacking in the hobby.

You also do faceups, dyes, resin-match and other “complicated” works. What can you share about this?
I am willing to attempt pretty much anything! The only thing I won't do is work on recast dolls. Usually I will start by testing out something on my own dolls, then after I do it successfully I feel comfortable offering it as a service to others. Sometimes people come to me with original character ideas that are very detailed or intricate, but since I've had lots of practice now I am pretty confident to just jump right in!

What type of repairs or mods are the most common request?
So far, eye mods! Eye openings are very popular, particularly for fully-closed sleeping Minifee heads. I have done some partial eye closing mods as well, and I am currently doing a mod that includes completely closing an eye too.

Do you work with pre-orders, or are always open to orders?
I am still trying to work out the best way to accept commissions. I normally like to only have about 3-4 different client jobs actually with me to work on at the same time. I like to try to keep a quick turnaround time, so the more jobs I have to work on at the same time, the longer it takes to complete each one. I am the only person behind my shop, so I do everything myself! For a while I opted to just keep a waitlist open at all times, but then at one point I had a lot of people interested in hiring me so it got really long, and I worried about making clients wait too long for their turn. So now I think it will be helpful to do order periods, where I will accept a limited number of commissions, plus a few to waitlist, so I can do my best to get to everyone who would like to commission me, while also keeping things manageable for me. I try to keep my commission status updated on my Instagram, website, and Den of Angels shop thread, though I admit I am much better at doing it on Instagram! And I am always happy to discuss someone's ideas for future commissions, and give price quotes, even if I'm not open to accept new jobs at that time.

You are also sculpting heads and a body, with the brand-name Arbordoll. What can you tell us about it?
My sculpting started years ago. It took me so long to actually finish my first head Aspen, haha! When I started really getting into modifications, I realized, "Hey! This is sculpting!" And I don't even remember why we had it -I think it was my husband's, left over from high school- but we had a block of old DAS clay tucked away, and some sculpting tools, so I just thought it might be something fun to do on weekends, and I started sculpting a head! I haven't had any traditional art training, other than a painting class that I took in college. So all my sculpting has been by eye, and what I've taught myself with tutorials and guides and diagrams online. I think my head turned out pretty nicely considering all that, so I'm happy with the result.
Really, it taught me so much about the BJD creation process in general, and how much time, work, and money it takes to have a successful release! Unless you are able do it as a preorder, you need to pay for everything up front - boxes, paperwork, shipping supplies - everything costs more than I thought it would! Luckily I had enough money from commissions that I was able to afford it all at. But even with my base price to purchase one of my heads, I would still only break about even if I managed to sell all the casts. And so far I have only sold one head, so I haven't been able to recoup any of those funds yet! But it has been a great experience, and feels very fulfilling to have done it all. Over the last year or so I have started working on a few different full dolls as well! One of them is not very good, and the other is barely started yet, but I hope to have time to work on them more soon in the future!

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
I am hoping to open up for new commissions soon! I am currently in the middle of working through my last waitlist - I finally made some good progress through the last couple of months, so I have been making good headway lately. And, I do still have a few in-stock Aspen heads available for purchase as well!

Thank you for doing the interview!
Thank you again for interviewing me! Best wishes to everyone, and I hope you are all doing well!

This is all for all! I know, Airimir makes some amazing work, honestly! I need to confess, that when I broke Venezia's leg she fixed it to perfection, colour match included. Great work, excellent artist! You can find her here: As always, please share the link to the interview, but do not repost it. I hope you enjoyed this one, and I will see you on the next post! :D

  1. Thanks for doing this interview. That toothy chest is fabulous. I tried to remember why the name sounds so familiar... Now I know, she's an admin on DOA, that's why I see the name frequently! It's really nice to learn about her talent, I didn't know.
