Interview with Meeksdoll

Hello everyone! Today we have another intervoew, so please welcome Aubrey, the sculptor of Meeksdoll. As always, the interview is in English and Spanish, and all photos are used with permission. So, without further ado, let's begin!

Hello! Will you introduce yourself to the readers?
Hello! I’m Aubrey, the sculptor and owner of Meeksdoll. I was previously in Germany producing my dolls but I’ve recently relocated back home in the United States.
¡Hola! ¿Te introducirías a los lectores?
Hola!

How did you find out about BJDs and the doll hobby?
Someone once told me my art style would lend well to BJDs. At the time I was unfamiliar with what a BJD was but once I looked it up I fell in love. I applied to join Den of Angels immediately and started collecting first before I started making my own dolls. I fell in love with the customizability of the dolls, and bringing my own characters to life. I also love a good project and there’s never a dull moment in this hobby. The way I collect dolls, I was always playing with the look of the characters and redoing wigs or restyling clothes or redoing faceups. That was a lot of fun for me.

And from there, what inspired you to create your dolls?
I think that neverending project mode I was in with collecting really lent itself to me sculpting my own dolls. I have always been fascinated with dolls and making my own, even from a young age I would make my own ragdolls. So I always knew coming into the hobby that I would eventually sculpt my own dolls. The characters I create are usually a little urban fantasy, they have a little bit of a magical creature mixed in with a contemporary urban setting, and I think that has been the most fun to figure out for me recently, seeing how that translates into new sculpts. I went to university for fine art and sculpture but I had a hard time really figuring out what I wanted to do afterwards. The idea of sculpting BJDs kind of combined everything I was interested in one exciting place.

You did several heads like Harlow, Faust and others, and recently offered a full body. What lead you to that change? Are the prior heads suitable for the Labellas body?
Merry Doll Round I believe had some advice for sculptors starting out in BJDs and said something like, focus on heads first and once you feel comfortable there it'll be easier to work on bodies after that. I admire Nuria a lot so I took that advice to heart. I worked on heads first and then on the body. It was something I'd been working on since 2017 so it took a long time to really get to a place I was happy with, but I think the addition of full dolls to Meeksdoll was a natural progression I had been trying to manifest almost since the beginning. Now that I have some more resources at hand, like my resin printer, it’s a lot easier to sculpt bodies and test out the joints without as many costs. 3D sculpting can get quite expensive because it's trial and error with testing out the joints and the balance of the doll, how it poses, there are so many factors. So having my own printer has really facilitated how I can work on full dolls in the future.
Has hecho varias cabecitas como Harlow, Faust y otras, y recientemente has ofrecido un cuerpo entero. ¿Qué te impulsó a cambiar?

What is your workflow? Do you do everything by yourself?
Oh yes, as much as I can. I sculpt everything digitally, but because I hadn't had my own resin printer for the Labellas Body preorder, I did a lot of hand work after the prints were made to adjust for fit and posing and all the finer details that you can only really see once you start to play with the doll. So before the endless sanding and priming stage there was a lot of work that went into the engineering of the doll even after the initial sculpting and printing phase. I think I worked on and off on the digital sculpt of the precursor to the Labellas Body since 2017 and then at some point I started over from scratch and kept a few elements from that precursor, just ideas like the belly and the curve to the shoulders. I finished the Labellas Body in 2020 and had sent it to be resin printed by that December. It wasnt until July of 2021 that I finished the hand sculpting and fine tuning I mentioned and had it ready to send to the caster for samples. It was a nerve-wracking time because sculptors have to commit and hope that there’s enough interest in our work way before we open a preorder when working with a caster. So by September 2021 the samples were made and I then was able to open my preorder at the end of October that year. There’s lots of things too, like marketing -- making sure people hear about your work and see it, photography, faceups and body blushing for promotional material.
Like any small business, it's making sure you put on all the hats for the business, production, marketing, finance, all of it. Once I received the orders from the caster, there’s a lot of quality control that happens, making sure the product you get back is fit for sale and speaking up for your work and for your customers so that the product they receive is perfect and brings them joy when they open it. Then there’s packaging. I think packaging is one of my favourite parts. I think ordering a BJD is a whole experience, the ordering, waiting for it, the excitement and planning your doll in the meantime. So I really want my customers to have a moment when they open their dolls. There's so much that goes into doll making but it's so satisfying to see the dolls go to their homes and get customized. The end product and seeing all the love their owners put into them is the best part.

Do you work with preorders? Do you repeat pre-orders?
I do work with preorders. The tough thing with repeating pre-orders is knowing if there’s enough interest for a second preorder. I am not someone who would say no to any second preorders but it would come down to whether or not there is enough interest. So if there’s ever a doll you want from a small artist and you’re not sure if they will re-release, ask! I know whenever someone asks me about a second preorder for a doll I mark it down so I can get an idea of if a second preorder will be a success or a failure. If your favourite artist has a wishlist on their site or a waitlist and you're certain you're interested, join it! It's really helpful to us! I'm looking for a way to have full dolls and doll heads for sale more regularly, so that while you might have to preorder and wait for the item to be produced, like most doll companies, the ordering periods will be more on-going than a preorder with a set timeframe.
¿Trabajas con encargos? ¿Repites encargos?

You recently shared Meeksdoll Lumen and Caspian! What can we expect of them in the future!?
Yes! Those are my mermen! I just casted some head samples and sent them off to Komorebi to be painted. My intention is to finish the merman body between now and when they come back from a faceup so I can start showing them off and hopefully open a preorder for them in the meantime. I am also considering releasing my three newest head sculpts, yet to be named, for a head only preorder.
¡Recientemente compartiste Meeksdoll Lumen y Caspian!

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
Keep an eye out! I am planning a lot of fun new things for the upcoming year. I'm going to be opening custom orders for heads, both 3D resin printed and/or casted. I also want to offer smaller sized dolls. When I finish the merman body, ideally, I will offer it in human and merman form in both 70+ and 40+ sizes. I'm also planning to utilize the 3D resin printer for more affordable dolls. I'm doing a lot of prototyping right now for a few different things but there's a lot to look forward to from Meeksdoll!
