Interview With Xhanthi of Jointed Love

Hello!!! I know I did not post anything on the whole week, but some events recalled my attention. Anyways. This month I had the pleasure to interview my favourite BJD faceup artist: Xhanthi of Jointed Love. She was amazing and very kind, and answered all my questions really fast! So, without further ado... the interview!

No, thank you! I'm so flattered that you'd ask me, it's so exciting to be asked to do an interview.

This is a classic question, but… how did you start doing faceups? I actually got into BJD because of the faceups. I used to like painting tabletop war gaming miniatures so BJD was perfect because I love character creation. The idea that I could make my own characters and that if I learnt how to paint them I'd be able to change them however I wanted was so exciting. My first faceup was horrible but I kept trying and slowly improved. In the beginning I had a lot of fun experimenting with doing horror and fantasy stuff, though it's not what I like doing now.

Esta es una pregunta clásica, pero… ¿cómo comenzaste a hacer maquillajes? De hecho, empecé con las BJD debido a los maquillajes. Estaba acostumbrada a pintar miniaturas de juegos de mesa de guerra, así que las BJD eran perfectas porque adoro la creación de personajes. La idea de que podía hacer mis propios personajes y que si aprendía a pintarlos sería capaz de cambiarlos cuando quisiera, era sensacional. Mi primer maquillaje fue horrible, pero seguí intentando y de a poco fui mejorando. En el principio tuve mucha diversión experimentando con cosas de horror y fantasía, aunque ahora no es lo que más me gusta hacer.

How did you style/techniques evolved in all this time? I'm not sure, I think my style is probably always changing because I'm always trying new ways of doing things in an attempt to improve. This is a really hard question because it's hard for me to be objective enough about my own work to pinpoint any particular style. I usually just try to make the doll look as lifelike as I can, but I also find I switch it up because not all sculpts look realistic, some are more anime/cartoon based so I tend to be a little more stylistic on those ones.

¿Cómo evolucionaron tus técnicas y estilos en todo este tiempo? No estoy segura, creo que mi estilo probablemente siempre está cambiando porque yo siempre estoy intentando nuevas maneras de hacer las cosas en un intento de mejorar. Esta realmente es una pregunta complicada porque me es difícil ser lo suficientemente objetiva sobre mi propio trabajo para apuntar a algún estilo en particular. Usualmente, simplemente intento hacer que la muñeca cobre tanta vida como pueda, pero también he descubierto que no todos los moldes lucen realistas, algunos son más animé/cartoon así que intento ser más estilizada en esos.

Have you had a favourite work? Or most popular one? If I had to pick my favourite faceup I'd have to say my F60 Mirween. I don't know what happened but she's wonderful and one of the few dolls that I own and don't want to repaint. But the doll that brought me the most creative joy was my Minifee Woosoo. She was a rescue dolly and arrived to me in a pretty terrible state. I put a lot of work into making her beautiful and it was really satisfying. She was with me for a long time but I recently let her go. She now lives with Aleksandra from The Dolls Corner [LINK] I love seeing the photos she takes, she's given my old girl a new lease on life and has turned her into something really wonderful.

¿Cuál ha sido tu trabajo favorito o el más popular? Si tuviera que elegir mi maquillaje favorito, tendría que decir mi F60 Mirween. No sé qué sucedió, pero ella es maravillosa y una de las pocas muñecas que tengo y que no quiero repintar. Pero la muñeca que me trajo la mayor alegría creativa fue mi MNF Woosoo. Ella era una muñeca rescatada que me llegó en un estado terrible. Puse muchísimo trabajo en dejarla hermosa y fue realmente satisfactorio. Estuvo conmigo por un largo tiempo, pero recientemente la dejé ir. Ella ahora vive con Aleksandra de The Dolls Corner [LINK]. Adoro ver las fotos que ella toma, le ha dado a mi vieja chica una nueva veta de vida y la ha cambiado a algo maravilloso.

What do you look for in the faceups of your own dolls? I'm not very adventurous with my own dolls. They all have fairly natural faceups and neutral looks. I don't like to do anything really fantastical or edgy because I enjoy changing my doll's looks, it works better for me to keep their faces neutral so that they can be different characters for photos. I do want to experiment more with my characters though. I'd like to have a really creepy, spooky looking doll one day. Of all my dolls Fig has the most unusual faceup but even then I still think it's a safe, tame look. I guess Blake has the darkest look what with all his scars.

¿Qué es lo que buscas en los maquillajes de tus propias muñecas? No soy muy aventurera con mis propias muñecas. Todos tienen maquillajes naturales y apariencias neutrales. No me gusta hacer nada fantasioso o tendencioso porque disfruto cambiar las apariencias de mis muñecas, así que lo que funciona mejor para mí es mantener sus rostros neutrales así pueden ser diferentes personajes para las fotos. Sí me gusta experimentar un poco con mis personajes. Algún día me gustaría tener una muñeca de apariencia fantasmal y aterradora. De todas mis muñecas, creo que Fig tiene el maquillaje más inusual, pero incluso así creo que es un look seguro y domado. Creo que Blake tiene la apariencia más oscura con todas sus cicatrices.

I have seen that you have a lot of gorgeous dollies. Which is your fav BJD brand, and why? Well truth be told I have a lot of heads and not a huge amount of whole dolls, I make them all share bodies lol. But my Favourite brand would have to be Fairyland. I'm obsessed with Fairyland hybrids. I tend to like the head sculpts of other companies but I think Fairyland bodies are such a lovely combination of aesthetics and posing. Though that being said I don't think they're the best at posing, or even the best looking dolls, but for me they offer the best combination of those two things so I always end up coming back to Fairyland. I find them fun to handle and nice to look at.

He visto que tienes un montón de hermosas muñecas. ¿Cuál es tu marca favorita de BJD y por qué? Bueno, para decir la verdad, tengo un montón de cabezas y no tantas muñecas completas, ya que hago que todas compartan cuerpo, LOL. Pero mi marca favorita sería Fairyland. Estoy obsesionada con los híbridos Fairyland. Tienden a gustarme los moldes de las cabezas de otras compañías pero creo que los cuerpos de Fairyland tienen una adorable combinación de estética y posabilidad. Con eso dicho, no creo que sean los mejores en posabilidad, o las muñecas de mejor apariencia, pero para mí ofrecen la mejor combinación de esas dos cosas así que siempre termino volviendo a Fairyland. Los encuentro divertidos de manejar y placenteros de observar.

And I can bet it is Fig, but… who is your favorite doll in your collection? Haha! Yeah it is Fig. She's the only one that I'd consider complete. She's alive inside my head in a way that none of the others are. It's as though one day she decided to move into my house not caring that there were other people already living here. She doesn't even need me around, she just does her own thing ;) Okay that's a lie, she needs me to operate the credit card.

Puedo apostar que es Fig, pero… ¿quién es tu muñeca favorita en tu colección? ¡Jaja! Sí, es Fig. Ella es la única que puedo considerar completa. Está viva dentro de mi cabeza en una forma en la que ninguno de los otros está. Es como si ella un día decidió mudarse a mi casa sin que le importe que ya hubiera otras personas viviendo ahí. Ella no me necesita cerca, simplemente hace sus cosas ;) De acuerdo, eso es una mentira, ella me necesita para operar la tarjeta de crédito.

Do you have any future plans to share with us? Well I'm hoping to get another airbrush compressor this year that will allow me to start airbrushing on some colour with my faceups. That should be exciting. Or maybe a total disaster who knows lol. I also want to do a few more Monster High customs this year, they're a lot of fun and a nice change from working on BJD. I'd like to work on some new dolly sets for photos too, or maybe some dioramas for the Pukifees.

¿Tienes algunos planes futuros para compartir con nosotros? Bueno, este año estoy esperando a conseguir otro compresor para el aerógrafo, lo que me permitiría comenzar a aerografear algo de color en mis maquillajes. Eso debería ser sensacional. O quizás un desastre total, quién sabe, LOL. También quiero hacer algunos customs más de Monster High, son muy divertidos y un lindo cambio a trabajar con BJD. Me gustaría trabajar en nuevos sets para fotos de las muñecas, o quizás en algunos dioramas para las Pukifees.
