How did Little Monica start as a BJD store?
L: BJD was first created by 1930s Surrealism artist, Hans Bellmer, and was developed and published by Japanese doll artists. Now the boom in the industry has been expanded to Korean companies for this hobby to be wisely known and respected through the world. I wanted to be a part of the movement, so started this company, Little Monica in 2008, with my own sculpts and management.
H: This year is Little Monica’s 7th year. The company has been opened since Mr.Lee’s personal sculpt, ‘Monica’ has been on sale as the company’s first doll, and the company’s name has been created after the doll. ‘Monica’ has then, re-created as our anniversary event, free doll for VIPs.

Little Monica dolls are lovely and also have a very distinctive aesthetics. What is your motto/goal behind this design?
L: As BJD might be the most human lookalike doll, I know the doll owners are seeking for something more than just 'having a doll.' It might be love, or friendship, or even comfort, I think. So I try to depict these inner natures inside while making dolls.
H: Our motto is to share the doll sculptor’s love in it with more people. There are some difficulties during the process of delivering the doll image from head to reality, and we try to overcome the limit and make the exact doll as we imagined first time. During the process, we get much love in those dolls, and I think people can also feel whether we’ve been putting much love in those dolls or not. Therefore, I think the doll makers should love the dolls first, to make the customers be satisfied with them.

What is the process of designing a new doll at Little Monica?
J: Mr.Lee & Ms.Lee do the first design and sketches. And when Mr.Lee finishes doll sculpting, Ms.Lee assigns the final concept of it and designs Face-Up, overall styles and so on. And then the doll is being photographed and comes out to the world.
H: There are several different procedures such as that the sculpted mold comes out first and a concept is assigned to it, or that the concept sketching is done first and the mold is sculpted based on the sketch. Or we sometimes make an exact conceptual dolls for the storyline of ‘A Night at the Aster’s’ which is Little Monica’s own doll photostory. By explaining the big steps of ‘sculpting first and assigning concept to it,’ the doll’s master mold is sculpted first, and concept assignment and sketches follow up. Then, we make the doll’s Wig, Eyes, Outfit, Shoes, and Accessories based on the sketches.

From all of your gorgeous dolls, is there a most-popular sculpt? And a favorite sculpt inside the team?
J: It’s hard to pick the most popular one as all our dolls seem to have similar popularity to each other… But nowadays it might be ‘Little Sophia’ and ‘Haazel,’ I guess?
L: I still have so many things to improve, but personally, my most satisfying doll so far is 'Monica' which has the same name after the company.
H: Hmm... I personally like ‘Innocent Enrill,’ ‘Chloe’ & ‘Roselyn.’ ‘Sarubia’ & ‘Sophia’ seem to be the most popular ones in Korea.

Sadly, the hobby is facing a though period due to recasts/bootlegs. What is your statement in this matter?
J: I think it’s the assignment for us and all the BJD companies to solve ahead, but I wish all doll lovers to remember all those people’s hard works behind for creating one doll. I also didn’t realize that much before I actually saw Mr.Lee and others’ working processes, and I wish we can come up with an idea to deliver those things to the customers.
H: I think the issues should never be understood or ignored. To release one doll, there are so many thoughts and works for every details behind, and if those recast dolls, which can be easily just duplicated and done, get spread in the market, the problem will get bigger and bigger, and all the creators’ effort will get collapsed. As well as the recasters are the problems, the people who don’t think about the problems much and just buy those recast dolls in cheap price should also think about the problems again. Of course, we should also keep looking for the solutions.

Finally, anything else you want to share with us?

  2. I am so excited to read this interview of one of my favourite companies! I love LM dolls for their distinct look and the effort they put into their own photostory that ties them all together. I was hoping they would have shed some light into their artist face-up process since I find them so beautiful and really showing off just how versatile the sculpts are :) I will definitely keep supporting LM and if I get another SD, I have a few LM sculpts lined up on my wishlist just battling out which one to buy. Someday I will get that Monica head! XD
