Interview with Lisa Babenko [KCDoll]

Hi everyone! It is time for another interview! This time, it is an honor to present an interview with the talented Russian artist Lisa Babenko from KCDoll -you may also know her by her artist nickname Kularien

As always, the interview is both in English and Spanish, and all the images were used with permission. However, since there is a lot of images, I have put some of them on links (sometimes you can click the image to get to Lisa's site with more photos), to help load the interview faster; the links have very descriptive names, too :3

Hello! It is a pleasure to interview you, Lisa!
Thank you! It’s a pleasure to meet you, too!
¡Hola! ¡Es un placer entrevistarte, Lisa!
¡Gracias! ¡Es un placer conocerte, también!
Lisa at the International Doll Salon in Moscow, Russia.

I always start with a classic question: how did you found about BJDs?
I cannot recall exactly how many years ago I first found about BJDs. When a friend of mine shared a link to pictures of incredibly beautiful dolls I’d never seen before, I’d just bought my first (and only) Fashion Royalty doll and I was absolutely new to doll collecting. Those beauties had lifelike eyes and faces, sophisticated outfits and great poseability. As I found out later, they were Dream of Dolls BJDs. Then the more I learnt about ball jointed dolls, the more they captivated me.

How did you decided to start making dolls? Also, do you have a workspace to share with us?
I am an illustrator, so my interest to dolls is also an essential part of my profession. I often draw game characters concept art, and a few years ago I was looking for a perfect reference mannequin — a small, but flexible and detailed doll that would pose nicely. I wanted it to be portable as well, and of course matching my style of drawing. Eventually, I did not find anything close to what I was looking for. Therefore, making my own BJD seemed like an only option for me!
It has been more than 5 years already since I made my very first BJD. Her name was Katysha; she was 22 cm (8.6 inches) tall. She had miniature physique of a young girl in her late teens. Katysha’s body was pretty detailed and flexible; later it has been slightly modified to become Belle Petit body — one of the most popular choice for K.C. Doll owners.
K.C.Doll brand name means Kularien Custom Doll. Kularien is my nickname; I used it to sign my illustrations long before I even thought about making BJDs.
¿Cómo decidiste comenzar a hacer muñecas?

How many people work or does collaborations with you?
All of my dolls are hand made by me in my studio in Samara, Russia. This is time-consuming because it means a lot of (not always creative) work. Doll body parts are so small and detailed that hardly any factory could meet the quality requirements. Luckily, I have an assistant who helps me out with technical tasks such as casting and assembly.
I can say I am kind of a ‘universal dolly soldier’ since I do so much myself: sculpting new doll faces and bodies, creating looks, makeup, wigs, and shoes. The only thing I am not so good at is sewing. Therefore, my dolls’ outfits are custom-made by talented seamstresses in accordance with my sketches.
¿Cuantas personas trabajan contigo o hacen colaboraciones contigo?

Your dolls are stunning! Your sculpt from naked, basic, dolls, heads with sculpted hair or clothes. Also gorgeous shoes! Do you have any motto/meta in mind? Any particular aesthetic idea you wanted to sculpt?
Oh, thank you so much for your kind words! Actually sculpting is my favorite part of a doll making process. I enjoy creating new bodies and faces, better joints mechanics for more natural look and improved poseability. I have so many ideas to realize in future! Probably the most cherished one is to convey the diversity of human beauty types, beauty of different bodies, ages and races.

From the very beginning, I wanted to create a fully customizable line of BJDs, so that everyone could choose body and face type plus skin tone and eventually make a doll to his or her taste. Tastes differ; some people prefer tall slender bodies and European-looking faces over, like, curvy African ladies. Just like bigger BJDs, my dolls have interchangeable hands and feet; different gestures improve doll’s posing expression.
Now there are three different female bodies to choose from. The first one is the Belle Petite — a young girl with miniature physique, probably in her teens. It is the ‘original’ K.C.Doll body: I actually made it first, and it is still a very popular ordering option. Dolls on Belle Petite body are 22 cm (8.6 inches) tall. The second one it the Top Model body created in 2013. It is a bit taller, about 27 cm (just as tall as Momoko doll). This body represents my idea of a perfect fashion model. Last but not least, there is Femme Fatale body which is exaggeratedly curvy, feminine and sexy. No wonder it is so popular among my male customers.

By the way, since last year my girls have a guy, too! I presented the first K.C.Doll Top Model Man body at the end of 2014.
I wanted to provide as many ways to interact with my doll as possible. As a result, few years ago, I created a set of interchangeable ‘emotional’ faceplates for Katysha — one of the early yet very popular K.C.Doll face. Now Katysha can do many things: smile, frown, cry, yawn, and even blow kisses! ‘Emotional’ faceplates are available for order separately, but I’d suggest to get a whole set for photo stories: two or three emotions are never enough!

As far as artist’s motto/meta is concerned, along with doll’s poseability (which is of course extremely important for me), I always strived for natural ‘realistic’ joints construction, knees in particular. K.C.Doll aesthetics combines small but detailed body, sleek silhouette, and wisely designed joints that allow doll to pose naturally. I do my best to follow this principle in every new project.
Recently I’ve been more into experiments with sculpture such as molded doll lingerie, hair, body with less articulation points. Who knows, maybe one day I will be making figurines along with BJDs. I’ve already made a few iconic figurines commissions, and I especially enjoyed sculpting clothing. If I can’t sew, at least I can sculpt whatever I want!
A girl can never have enough shoes, and footwear for dolls is my fetish so to say. I’ve already sculpted a few dozen of various models from historical to current trends, and still have a lot more to make.

Do you work with porcelain or resin to make your dolls?
I think porcelain dolls are very special, and their aesthetics is fragile and secure at the same time. Currently all my dolls are cast in resin, but I do have plans to make a few in porcelain as well.

How do you plan your releases? Is there anything that inspires you?
For an artist inspiration is a complex thing. Usually a piece of polymer clay is just enough to inspire me! Well, seriously, I tend to find my inspiration everywhere: in people I meet, or in color combinations, or an interesting story I read. Sometimes I even may find somebody’s lips or hands inspirational.
For each of my fullset dolls I write a short story of his or her life and adventures. Sometimes these stories are romantic, and sometimes sad or terrifying, like horror movies. I publish them on my website to let people better understand the idea behind the doll and my inspiration.
My Black&White collection is based on the idea of opposites that complete each other to the whole. There would be no day without the night, or no chess party without both black and white figures. For my recent Mysterious Family collection, I found my inspiration in mystical novels of the Victorian era.

Have you participated in Salons and Conventions? Do you want to share a little of your experience with us?
I took part in many Russian doll exhibitions in Samara (where I live), St. Petersburg and Moscow. I would like to visit international doll exhibitions in Europe, USA and Japan.
In 2014 my Mysterious Family collection was exhibited at Moscow International Doll Salon. The collection based on a horror story I wrote was also a premiere for two new K.C.Doll bodies — Femme Fatale and Top Model Man.

Sadly, the BJD hobby is suffering a lot from recasted/bootlegged dolls. What is your statement on this regard?
Luckily, my dolls have never been bootlegged yet, but the whole situation with recasted BJDs makes me really sad. I am strictly against bootlegs (in general, not only of my own dolls) and do my best to prevent making and selling them. As a majority of doll artists, I strongly believe recasting is an intellectual property theft. I wish more people shared the same opinion!

Finally, anything else you want to share with us?
Foe everyone who might be interested I would gladly share some plans I have for this year. For 5 years, I have been only working on my own custom-sized doll line — 22-29 cm tall. Based on popular demand I am planning to make a couple of dolls of standard BJD sizes that will be able to borrow clothes and wigs from other brand dolls — 14 cm tiny girls and 40 cm fashion models line. The new dolls will also feature changeable glass eyes rather than painted.
