Interview with UnoAlchemy

Hello everybody! New month starts tomorrow, but it is time for a new interview!! This time, please welcome Melinda (also known as the artist of MilMascaras Faceups) and Maria (aka Beretta Grim), owners of UnoAlchemy, the store that sells Unoa B-Grade Kits internationally.

Al always, all images belong to Melinda and Maria, and they were used with permission. The interview is in both English and Spanish, so... let's get started, shall we?

Hi there! Thank you so much for doing the interview!
Melinda: Thanks for asking us! I feel like our fellow Unoa Freaks know us pretty well, but I always enjoy getting to know new personalities in the hobby. My name is Melinda, and I operated as MilMascaras Faceups before we got UnoAlchemy going. I’m from Texas, but I’ve lived all over. I spent a couple of years in Japan as a teacher, but I live in Austin now and do my part for UnoAlchemy from here.

Maria: my (middle) name is Maria so some people may know me from the Unoa FB group as Dagbjört. I go by BerrysDoll, Beretta Grimm or Daggerchan online. I’m originally from Iceland and UnoAlchemy is my first venture into the BJD business world. I live in Japan at the moment, but will most likely stay here indefinitely, so I take care of the Japan side of the business. I’ve always had one pinky finger in the Unoa circles around the net, a pet project between me and some good friends was the unoa.in forum which is unfortunately down at the moment.
¡Hola!

How did you find out about BJDs? Did you started collecting soon?
Melinda: BJDs sort of found me. I took a course in Japanese, and my Japanese teacher was a doll collector. She introduced me to Volks Super Dollfies. At the time they were impossible to get unless someone in Japan could buy one for you, so I had to wait a few years to save the money and wait for them to become available in the United States.

Maria: I was a big fan of Aimee Major’s art when I was a teenager, and I remember these dolls popping up on her website in the early ‘00s. At first I thought they were super creepy! But they sort of grew on me and I became completely obsessed. Living on an isolated island made ordering things online quite intimidating but I took the plunge about a year or so after I realised I really wanted one.
¿Cómo conocieron las BJDs? ¿Comenzaron a coleccionarlas rápidamente?
Melinda: Las BJDs me encontraron a mí.

Why and how did you decided to start UnoAlchemy? Was it hard to kickstart?
Melinda: Maria was the driving force behind arranging the meetings with Alchemic Labo. We became friends because of Unoas, but at the time they were so hard to obtain outside of Japan. She helped me get a few Unoas I wanted to buy, and we realized it would be wonderful if we could do this for everyone else, too. So many people love these dolls, but the secondhand markup was so high on them because of how difficult they were to obtain.
Noppin wasn’t a reliable source for Unoas, and Alchemic Labo didn’t have a good channel for selling internationally, but Maria has a great go-getter attitude. She arranged a meeting for us all to talk about the international market, and it started there. Alchemic Labo is actually a very small company, so it feels more like we are all friends helping each other out than like a business.

Maria: I usually say it was all a strike of good luck, good timing and happy coincidences how we got started! I could never have done it without partnering up with Melinda because while I’m a plotter and an idealist, she’s the solid push behind making things happen.
The Unoa series have been my favorite type of doll for years and years, Sist was my first grail and I sold all my dolls and waited 2 years to be able to order her. Acquiring them has always been troublesome. Moving to Japan was like a new world, ordering on Y!J without an agent! Going to Mandarake in person! Even ordering straight from Alchemic Labo. I started helping my friends get their dolls, Melinda almost had a Unoa subscription in the beginning. xD
My first contact with Alchemic Labo was at an event here in Japan. We started chatting and once they found out I was staying in Osaka they asked me if I’d be interested in helping out at the Osaka events. Things kind of snowballed from there and once the founder of AL had met Melinda, and heard our proposal, they decided it might be a good idea to try it out. We schemed and planned things for about a year before we launched UnoAlchemy officially. July 2016 was be our 1 year anniversary and as far as I know AL don’t regret their decision. Both Alchemic Labo and we at UnoAlchemy agree that no one should have to pay double the retail price of these dolls just because of their location.

UnoAlchemy sells B-Grade kits. Would you explain us what is that?
Sure! B-grade dolls are dolls with small casting flaws. Sometimes it may be a small air bubble, or a bit of dust in the resin (this is called an inclusion - like with a gemstone!). Alchemic Labo is very picky about their quality, so even things we usually can’t notice can make a doll a B-grade doll. B-grade dolls start at a lower price than standard grade dolls, and Alchemic Labo usually includes a lot of extra presents to UnoAlchemy customers who order them to show their appreciation for people who take home dolls they don’t consider to be perfect.
Alchemic Labo also sells B-grade dolls in Japan, so they’re not unique to UnoAlchemy. Unfortunately, the casting process tends to create more B-grade dolls than perfect grade.
UnoAlchemy vende Kits Grado-B.

You have partnered with Alchemic Labo to bring these dolls to the international market. How do this partnership works?
It really is like a friendship! Alchemic Labo is too small for employees (even their president sometimes doesn’t get a salary), so we help them out however we can with customer service and labor. Melinda works in the United States on graphic design, customer service, the website, marketing, and US events, and Maria works in Japan at Japanese events, and manages customer service and marketing as well. Maria also helps prepare the physical dolls and does a lot of work for Alchemic Labo! Her favorite thing is stringing new dolls for customers.
Whenever someone buys something from UnoAlchemy, that money goes straight to the Paypal for Alchemic Labo. The dolls also come from Alchemic Labo. UnoAlchemy helps them process international orders, but we’re not a traditional distributor. Our relationship is much closer than that.

Do you have any workplace to share with us?
Every month Maria travels to Tokyo from Osaka to work on Unoalchemy’s orders at the office/studio of Alchemic Labo. It’s really small and quite crowded, as all the boxes of Unoa parts line the walls. There are 2 work stations, one where the parts get drilled and another where the dolls are cleaned and assembled.
It looks just like a regular desk but that’s where every single Unoa part is checked for quality and the dolls are assembled. For orders and customer service at UnoAlchemy, almost everything happens online so we work with desktops in our homes and at work (we both have full time jobs besides Unoalchemy) or even our phones when we’re out and about.

Recently, you went to a doll convention! Do you want to share the experience with us?
Melinda: Actually, Maria has been doing an amazing job at doll shows in Japan for a long time! It was the first time for me to meet everyone as UnoAlchemy, but the experience was amazing. I got to see dolls I’d fallen in love with on Facebook and Tumblr - it was like meeting friends. I also got to hear stories about how people bought their Unoas with us. It was really touching for me because I remember exactly what it was like to be able to buy Unoas directly from the company I loved the most.
Doll A-Kon is still very small, but we had a lot of visitors and plenty of sales. It makes me happy to know there are more Unoas out there in the world. Now we’re just getting ready for BJDC in August!

Maria: I think the Japanese events are very different from the ones in US, EU and other countries. I’ve been working at events in Osaka and Tokyo for 2 years now, the main ones are Dollshow which is held 3-4 times a year, and Dollsmyth in Osaka which is 3 times a year. I’ve met a lot of famous Japanese creators which had me severely starstruck in the beginning, but these days I distribute weird candy to them, other vendors and our regular customers for fun.
Melinda was incredible doing A-kon for us almost completely by herself. I wish I could have been there with her to experience the things she mentions, but that will have to wait a little. I’m very excited about coming all the way to Texas this August to attend BJDC! Most of my social circle in the BJD hobby is in America or the EU, and I hope I can meet both friends and other new Unoa fans when I come!

Do you have personal doll collections? Will you share a little about them with us?
Melinda: My personal collection is my treasure. It’s mostly Unoas, obviously, but I have a few hybrids and odd characters. I don’t really share them or their stories much, but nothing gives me a boost quite like being in my room with my dolls and looking at their faces. I have a will in case I die unexpectedly, and only my dolls have a special stipulation. If I die, they will all go to Maria, because my dolls are a very powerful symbol of our friendship to me.

Maria: it was our love for Unoas that first brought us together, so my relationship with both my and Melinda’s dolls is very dear. My oldest doll, the Unoa Sist, is almost 9 years old and I think I could never part with her. I’ve been through a life change where I sold everything, even my beloved tuba and all my collection of vintage clothes, but my dolls were the only thing I kept besides a box of mementos and a suitcase of my own clothing.
My dolls (9 at the moment) all have certain characters, backstories and almost everything is decided about who they are and how they look, their relationships with each other. I don’t share these stories on any public platform but I do sometimes tell my friends about these musings. I would like to solidify the story and the whole world I’ve got in my head (including history, politics and mythology) that my dolls have inspired, maybe one day I can write it all in a book.

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
Melinda: For me, I just want to share some of the things that really surprised me when I got to know Alchemic Labo, because I feel like there are a lot of misconceptions about them. I’d always assumed they were a large company, but it’s not true at all. Alchemic Labo is really just the work of very few dedicated people who put their whole effort into Unoas. Even the dangerous and tedious jobs like sanding and drilling channels and stringing - that’s all done by the same people who run the company. Some people think there’s a kind of xenophobia that prevented them from selling outside of Japan all these years, but it was never about that. With so few people, just handling one country was almost too hard sometimes, and with the language barriers they knew they couldn’t serve their customers properly. Alchemic Labo loves their foreign customers so much. They get excited to see their customizations and they follow some collectors for many years to see their dolls evolve. They are very involved in their work, and I am so proud to be a part of that.

Maria: I think I would like to get sappy and say thank you for how awesome and nice our customers are. We get so many thanks and seeing what people do with their new dolls makes me so excited. I love a lot of other companies’ dolls but Unoas are the most special to me and I browse the tags almost every day on social media.
As for Alchemic Labo and our work with them, I’m so excited to see what the future will bring. They listen to our suggestions and get excited about making our customers happy. For us all it’s a labor of love, and the tedious work and long hours are so worth it. I kind of fall in love a little bit with every Unoa I place in their box, when they have their wig on and I imagine what they will become. That’s why it makes me so glad when I see them again with their new owners and how they have been customized! I will never get tired of BJD owners creativity and talent!

Thank you so much for doing the interview! :D

  1. Thank you so much for doing this interview, Musume! Unoa Lusis and Sist were my first grail dolls, and I paid an outrageous amount of money for them on ebay back in the day when they were harder to get than they are now. It sounds like international buyers are in very good hands with Melinda and Maria. I hope they continue their labor of love for many years to come.
