Interview with FingertipDreamland

Today I have a very special interview to share with you! Please welcome Huona from FingertipDreamland, the artist that has created those awesome, cute and unique tiny cyclop kittens! However, I also need to thank EugenioRuspoli as he acted as translator, translating from English to Chinese and then back to English.

As always, the interview is both in English and Spanish, and all photos are used with permission. I hope you will enjoy this!

Hello and thank you for doing the interview! Will you introduce yourself to the readers?
Thank you for having me! My name is Huona and I'm the sculptor and owner of Fingertip Dreamland. I began making BJDs in 2013. At first I released through Island Doll and OrDoll. Then, in 2016, I struck out on my own and formed Fingerip Dreamland.

Let’s start with a classic: how did you found out about BJDs?
I developed an occupational injury at my old job, so I quit and worked freelance while recuperating at home. During this period I stumbled across the work of the Popovy Sisters and became totally transfixed. I began to collect information and tutorials in my spare time.
When I first began making my own dolls, I thought smaller dolls would be easier to handle. I began with 1:12 sizes. There are so many great things about this size. I used to pack all my tools and unfinished dolls with me wherever I went and I could take them out to work on them wherever I liked. Photographing them was also a breeze. Being so small, they didn't draw much attention. It has become my favorite size to work with! But it seems I'm getting further and further away from the original inspiration from the Popovy Sisters...

And then, how did you decided to start sculpting your cute cyclops pets?
The second doll I ever made (it was my first pet-type doll) was An-an and I sold the production rights to Island Doll. Island Doll's Mr. Luo (the butler) and Luo-Luo (the footman) are limited fullset versions of An-An. An-an sold very well, and its success and the support I got from its collectors gave me hope that I could have a career as a dollmaker. It also made me want to create more pet-type dolls.
The inspiration of the Cyclops Marus came from The Heroes of Might and Magic III's Beholder monster. At my old job I was a game illustrator and HMM was one of my favorite games...
I may have betrayed my age Σ( ° △ °|||)︴
My original sketches for the Marus was essentially a giant eyeball with wings and teeth and a lolling tongue. But that felt out-of-style in the world of cute dolls and even cuter pets and the sketches languished until I figured out how to make them cute! Cat ears!
Y luego… ¿Cómo decidiste comenzar a esculpir tus adorables mascotas cíclope?
The Heroes of Might and Magic III”.

Do you have a workspace? How do you organize to do all the work?
I still like to work on-the-go. I have a box and a pencil pouch. In the box I've placed unfinished dolls and clay. In the pouch are sculpting and drawing tools. I like to work in parks and cafes. In the beginning of my career nearly all my sketching was done in cafes around my home. During sanding and priming I'd have no choice but stay home, but I don't really have a fixed workspace for this. As long as I have a cutting mat, I can work anywhere.(๑•؎ •๑)✧
I’m very curious but your brand, Fingertip Dreamland, has a very interesting name. Would you tell us why did you choose it? Does it have a special meaning?
The name (in Chinese) has 2 meanings. The first refers to crafting with your hands. The second refers to “playing”...to holding imaginary worlds in your hands. Since I work primarily in very small scales, all my publication photo shoots will contain photos of the dolls in hands (usually my hands). I think that's the cutest look for them 8D

Have you thought about expanding into other sized, or anthro BJDs?
The first two years of doll-making I've only made things in the 10cm range. Later, I've attempted human-type dolls and dolls at 1/8 (25cm) sizes. Human-type dolls are still at tentative experimental stages though, but later on I would like to try 1/6 (30cm) and 1/4 (45cm) sizes.
I envision my pet dolls to be appropriate sizes for pairing with 25~30cm dolls --- the optimal size for holding. And I think this will not change for quite a while.

Do you work with pre-orders, or do are you always open for orders?
If something I create has a good reception I will plan for a pre-order. I handle all the inspection, assembly, and shipping myself to control for quality, but this is time consuming. The balance between R&D and doing business is a tricky one to maintain. Currently I think periodic pre-orders is the best fit for me, so no open-orders yet =D

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
Oh oh! I am planning a pre-order event for a series of French Bulldog dolls soon! They're part of the story-world as the Cyclops Marus, and like the Marus, the French Bulldogs are a set of 4 dolls. They're named Kiki and Dodo and Mini Kiki and Mini Dodo. I had planned to include a set of steampunk top hat and jet pack with this series, but I couldn't find a casting service who wanted to produce things that small. So Kiki and Dodo are land-bound now (ÒωÓױ)

Thank you so much for doing the interview! :D
Thank you so much for this opportunity! See you all on the flip side!

  2. How interesting to get a glimpse behind the scenes of Fingertip Dreamland! I've wondered where that name comes from so now I know! :) I really liked to see the concept art and the early sculpt designs of the dolls.
The cyclops cats are slightly not my thing, but I do appreciate the original idea and the painting job on the kitties looks gorgeous! That French bulldog however is super-adorable! <3
