Interview with Amadiz Studio

Hello there! Today I have another interview to share with you. This time, I had the pleasure of interviewing Kate and George, the owners and artists of Amadiz Studio. You might know them for their awesome wigs, but they also make amazing costumes, shoes, and even dolls!

As always, all images are used with permission, and the interview is in both English and Spanish. So without further ado!

Hello!! Thank you so much for accepting the interview, it is an honor!
Hello! We are Kate and George Ramensky, a married couple and founders of Amadiz Studio. Thank you for this interview and your attention to our work. We’re happy to answer your questions.
¡¡Hola!!

How did you find out about BJDs?
We know each other for many years, from the early childhood. In our school years, we were united by friendship and common interests; we’ve always liked the same hobby. As a result, when we grew up and got married, the situation with common hobbies has not changed. Just a few years ago, we learned about such a hobby as BJD having appeared in our country, and we got interested in this issue.
When we bought our first doll, we asked ourselves - what should we dress on it, and where should we get some accessories for it? We were not familiar with overseas markets with products for dolls at that time, and we saw one best option for us in that situation – that we should begin to do everything for our dolls by our own hands. This process was quite fun. Like childhood, we still like to have common interests together. As a result, we started to make things and wigs for our dolls cause it was our new hobby. We always had a lot of creative ideas, and it turned out very exciting to put creative ideas into dolls.

How and why did you decided to start Amadiz Studio? Does the name have a special meaning?
We started to spread our pictures in BJD communities. And soon there were people who were asking questions about whether we can make the same things to their dolls. So, gradually, we found a new type of activity – i.e. the production of beautiful things for BJD, such elegant things, as we see them in our imagination. It is a very interesting process. And it is twice the pleasure to do it as a couple. Nowadays our company has several employees. We continue to expand our business, bringing together under our brand several talented people with the same passion for the world of beauty and BJD.
Initially, this was just a pretty word, George’s nickname on the Russian BJD club before he bought our first doll. It’s associated with Amadiz the Gallic, the knight from old Spanish novels; and it suits us as we’re trying to be honest, frank and with high moral principles both in life and in work. We’re always ready to help our clients in solving any problems, and always find the best decision for them if they address us personally.
It was the name under which we shared the very first photos of our dolls in clothes that we made for them. The first orders by BJD fans began to come to us exactly on that name; so that is why after our business developed, we left that name to our workshop that was able to approve itself as makers of doll clothes.

Your wigs are amazing, with tons of details and intricate designs. How did you start doing them? Which materials do you use and which sizes do you work with?
When our first doll arrived to us, we didn’t know where to buy a wig for BJD and decided to make it ourselves. Our first wigs were out of heat-resistant fiber. We liked to make haircuts for our own dolls, we didn’t think about work for sale, but many people began to notice our works and ask us to make wigs for them. We took up any designs, even very complicated ones that never existed in doll-size before. Each time, it was a challenge that we successfully completed, and our portfolio refilled with actual works of art. We’re very grateful to our customers that believed in us so much and offered us to make something like that.
At that point in time, many craftsmen in Russian BJD community made natural wigs from angora. They looked unvaried enough: thick, long, unrealistic wigs. We, too, didn’t suppose that a wig out of goat hair could look different, until someday, we decided to make such a wig with a beautiful haircut. That was the beginning for us to make interesting and complicated wigs out of organic materials that are present on our website now.
In our work, we have tried to use many different organic materials, so we can work with all of them in a quality manner selecting necessary materials for specific wig model. We like to work with angora, alpaca, Teeswater fleece, Lincoln fleece and many others.
We love alpaca for its smooth soft hair; it allows us to make very natural haircuts and also look beautifully as long hair. However, many people don’t know that the alpaca wig requires some specific treatment: you should often and carefully brush it with a tooth brush so that this thinnest hair doesn’t get tangled. That way, your wigs will always look as well groomed as those on our promo photos. Angora is still our main material, we buy only soft and long hair of the highest quality so that our customers could have the most enormous choice of possible models.
We like organic materials very much because the haircuts out of these materials always look real on dolls. Actually, we always tend to realism and beauty in our works. As for heat-resistant fiber, we still work with it while we create complicated and extra long fantasy wigs.
We make wigs mainly for the BJD because we love these dolls more than anything; that is why we use standard sizes from 4-5” to 10-11”.
If the doll of the customers is of some different size that doesn’t fit into the given interval or has a non-standard form of its head, they usually send us the doll’s head that requires an unusual wig.
¿Cómo empezaron a hacerlas?

You also do incredible clothes, from lingerie, to gowns and dresses, and even doll cosplays! How do you inspire yourself? Which are your favorite materials? Do you have any favorite outfit?
Thank you for your compliment to our work. We’re very happy to know that our creations cause positive feelings. Exactly that is the goal of our creative work: we want to please and inspire people that take part on the doll hobby.
A year ago, we created our first collection of doll clothes that was available for sale for a while. Since December 2016, we began to produce our own dolls, and with the issue of any new doll, we offer new collections of clothes in different styles, from evening gowns to casual training clothes.
However, from time to time, we still try to accept new individual orders for tailoring of doll outfits, and we’re always happy to make some doll cosplay. Several years ago, we did cosplay ourselves and performed on convents, that’s why we’re very interested in cosplay both in human size and in doll size.
Surely, each new dress leaves its positive impressions and stick to our memory, one way or the other. We put our efforts and soul in every piece of clothes, that’s why it’s difficult to stand out only one favorite outfit.
Obviously, not every type of cloth is comfortable to work with, however, it often happens that the cloth that is very uncomfortable for making little doll things looks very pretty in the finished outfit. That’s why we’re ready to endure discomfort during producing so that in the end, the dress looked great. The aesthetic side has always been important for us. There is a saying in our country, that beauty requires sacrifice. For example, if we take sewing pretty clothes, it could be very troublesome to work with one or another cloth, but the result could exceed all expectations. That means, all the efforts were made for a reason.

And… you also make fashionable shoes! How did you started? Which sizes do you work with?
We began to make shoes for our dolls to our first issue of our first BJD. We wanted the customer to be able to obtain the very same doll that we showed on promo photos. That meant that we had to make shoes ourselves in order to have a possibility to offer them in our shop on our web-site. We tried several methods, and delivered the best option of doll shoe-making. Since the first release, we offer new shoe models to every new doll issue. We make shoes only for dolls of our own make. However, according to our customers’ comments, the same shoes fit for the legs SD16 byVolks. We didn’t try our shoes on Volks ourselves, that’s why we could be guided only by comments.

Regarding your wigs, outfits and shoes. Do you work by stock or do you accept commissions?
We tend to accept commissions from time to time. Of course, the main profile of our work is making things of our stock that can be bought on our web-site. Yet still, we’re interested in making things that are unique. Customers ask us to produce those things for their dolls that had been their long awaited dreams. It’s often some cosplay image or some inspiration from a certain character, and it’s impossible to buy premade stuff for such an image because such offers simply don’t exist. And if we can find time for that, we’re always glad to be part of realization of someone’s dream.
Respecto a las pelucas, ropa y zapatos. ¿Trabajan con stock o aceptan comisiones?
Ocasionalmente aceptamos comisiones.

How did you decided to start your own line of BJDs?
We have dolls by other firms from our own doll collection; we purchased them from the moment we decided to make them our hobby. Since we like to realize our own fantasies through our dolls and embody characters of our own stories in them, we always have some certain demands to the dolls’ images. Unfortunately, we couldn’t realize all our ideas to the full based on the purchased dolls. That’s why we had a thought to make our own doll that would embody our ideas completely. We united in our work 3D-developments and hand work with sculpture, and we created our first doll and put it on the market in December 2016. Amadiz BJD are made of high-class extra-durable urethane resin. For the time being, we already released three different dolls. For the second doll, we developed a new female body, more flexible and coherent than the first one; we made ballet feet for her ballerina image. And for the third doll, we released a graceful and elastic male body which also has ballet and heel feet. As for today, we produce our own dolls less than a year, and because of that we are constantly perfecting our design.

How is your sale structure for your dolls? Are you always open for orders, or do you work by pre-order?
All our dolls are limit. Every new issue is limited by period of time and by number of dolls simultaneously. Considering our current production level, we can’t yet create doll lines that would always be available, and in order to manage our order quantities, we made a decision to release only limit and unique dolls for a while, that wouldn’t be available as basic models for permanent sale.
All dolls can be bought by pre-order because we require time to produce every new doll. And the waiting time Is caused both by the length of producing each particular new doll, and by the order queue for all dolls in general. Aside from that, we’re open for individual order; we accept orders for producing doll heads by the photo of the customer. Such head can be combined with the doll body of our current doll line Amadiz Angels, as well as with some new customized body.

Amadiz Angels Female Body

Do you have any future plans for your dolls? More head sculpts, other sizes, and so on?
We always have new ideas, which includes ideas of new dolls. We want to make several lines of our dolls of different sizes and with different bodies and faces. We always aim to offer our clients the best version of what we’re capable to create for a certain moment of time. We are now in process of perfecting our talents and skills in doll making. We have more ideas of dolls than time for their realization, and because of that, each time we have to choose what exactly we should prepare for the new release, and what should be left for another time. But it happens that when the time passes, we’re forced to refuse those developments that wait in the wings because we managed to leave them far behind. We hope that our new decisions and ideas would find their fans in future. As we see, our dolls receive more and more attention from BJD hobbyists, and as such, we want to believe we’re on the right path.

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
We are grateful to all our customers and those hobbyists that didn’t manage to become our clients yet but have been supporting us with warmth for a long time, saying all those kind words about our works. We’re glad to know your opinion and always happy to answer all your questions that’s why feel free to ask them if you need.

  5. Really enjoyed this interview Musume. It's interesting finding out a little history behind Amadiz Studio. I have long admired their wigs, they are so beautiful and as much as I appreciate the work that goes into producing them, I doubt if I can ever justify buying one, they are so expensive. Though I suppose if I only had one doll, it may probably be a different matter altogether.

I didn't realise they made dolls and costumes too, that was all news to me, so thank you for doing and sharing the interview.
