Interview with Dollpamm

This year April's Fool meets Easter and it also means new interview! It is a seasonal day, indeed! Anyways, I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Mes, the sculptor behind Dollpamm and their unique aesthetics! I hope you will enjoy this interview!

As always all images are provided by Dr. Mes and used with their permission. This is also in English and Spanish, so I hope you can enjoy the interview! Let's start!

Hi there! Thank you so, so much for agreeing to the interview! Will you introduce yourself to the readers?
Hello! Nice to meet you. I am the owner and Doll artist of Dollpamm. I sincerely thank you for giving me an opportunity to interview. I feel so happy to have interview. My Korean name is Bae Sung Ho. People in BJD know me as 'Dr.Mes', which is my sculptor nickname. In South Korea, hospital doctors call the surgical knife “Mes”, and Surgery Age Mes is my favorite tool and is used in sculpting, silicone mold making, resin molding, various work areas. For this reason I chose the nickname of the sculptor as Dr.Mes and I have been using this sculptor name for about 8 years. Currently I am working in the quiet outskirts of Korea. I was working in the city center by 2014. But for health and a better work environment, I moved my atelier to the clean air, quiet outskirts.
¡Hola! Muchas, muchas gracias por aceptar la entrevista. ¿Te presentarías a los lectores?
¡Hola!

How did you find out about BJDs and the doll hobby?
About 12 years ago, I had established a character design (customized visual design) company in Korea. I have been working with some of my staff to provide business and commercial CI / BI and character design, licensed character development, and caricatures. However, about 10 years ago, Korea did not have many customers' investment in content development and my company's capital situation was bad. The above design services were all intangible contents services.
I came up with a custom tangible character resin doll and personal caricature resin figures services. But I did not have the basic knowledge and skills about molding and sculpting and resin casting,
At that time, technology and information about resin production were difficult to find on the web. I started practicing with the research to see the very little information and pictures I found on the web and to make the techniques myself.
I have invested a lot of trial and error, a lot of capital for about two years. And finally, I made my own production skills (know - how) with difficulty.
I taught myself all necessary technical parts such as molding / sculpture, silicone mold making, urethane (resin) casting, lacquer airbrush painting, brush painting. Finally, I started to service customized figures, and over the years the capital situation had improved little by little.
But another ordeal came to me. However, Korean customers did not like waiting for a long production time for the customized figures, and I had to ship in a short time (one to two weeks). This was from the molding of the customer's order picture to the silicone mold making, resin copying and painting, all of work by myself.
I have lost my health because of my too hard schedule, and my spirit has become desolate. In addition, all the services I was doing had to be made in the form that the customer wants, In other words! The biggest stress was that I could not make what I wanted.
Over the years, as I was making custom-made services, I gradually lost my health and my rewards and interest in my work. During the figure service, there were a few disciples who were learning skills from me. One of them recommended me to make BJD.
I started to look up information about BJD on the web, I found on the web a BJD online shop and a few of people making BJD. WOW! BJD is able to sculpt the design I want, and I thought I could set the job / shipping schedule to my desired duration.
But my problem is, I had never seen the real thing of BJD. So, After much thinking and planning, I boldly challenged about making BJD with my own style and my own technique.
At this time, I had to set up a website name first because I had to buy the domain in advance for my online service. I chose the name DOLLPAMM and purchased the domain DOLLPAMM.COM. And then, I uploaded the BJD making process to my blog little by little, and shared the finished BJD picture on deviantart.com and some sites in Korea.
After that, I started to make Korea DOLLPAMM site and it took about 2 months to open Korea DOLLPAMM BJD online shop. A few days after the opening of the Korean site, I received e-mails from foreigners of many nationalities. Almost all of them were inquiries about overseas sales.
It was so strange, so happy and thankful. I promised foreigners who have contacted me to open DOLLPAMM overseas malls. I made the Dollpamm overseas online shop for about 2 ~ 3 months.
At that time, the first BJD I made is LOLI type MOMO which is currently on sale. The Loli line is the first BJD I made, and there are many awkward parts. It is a very affectionate doll to me. :)

What was your artistic goal?
I have yet to think seriously about my artistic goals. I think it's very difficult to find the answer to the question of artistic goals. No.., I think that an artistic goal is to be gradually transformed and created throughout the lifetime of the artist. I don't make dolls that are too commercial, and it is my pursuit of aesthetics to make unique and attractive dolls when I am sculpting dolls. And I am only sticking to the handmade carving method for the charm of handicrafts. The reason for this is that I enjoy the process of sculpt the doll with my hand. :) I will continue to make my dolls of the style that my customers and fans want together.I would like to say that I live happily in my life because of my fans and customers who like my dolls and buy them.

You play a lot with different resins, as your dolls have parts in different colors and even clear resin. What inspired you to do this?
I have been making lots of fantasy skin color recommendation from many overseas people while making dolls. So I tried to make dolls of various skin colors. And I thought about why the split parts should all be cast in the same color. Since then, I have come up with the idea of dividing animal fur and human skin into 2 tons of human skin color and fur skin color. The transparent resin is not used very well except when I express ice or water, but sometimes it is used to add uniqueness. If outsourcing resin casting to other companies or specialists, combining multiple skin colors is often very expensive or outsourcing is not possible. However, since I do resin color toning and casting myself, I was able to do the cumbersome casting work. I am going to make dolls of more diversified and unique skin color concept from now on. I am eager always-on service to our customers with a wide variety of skin color dolls and various skin color options, but newly added unique color dolls are usually available in limited editions. For this reason, it is very difficult to always make the same color every time the resin color is toned, and it is difficult to maintain / manage many colors. So, it is difficult to always offer many skin colors at all times. Thank you for your understanding in this part. If left in a resin state for a long time, both before and after color toning, the viscosity becomes high and it becomes very unfavorable for casting. If I don't exhaust all the colors, I have to throw them all away, so it is very difficult to always service many colors. Also, if the doll was pre-cast and stored for a long time, As you all know, due to the yellowing, the color is discolored and it seems that it can not be sold to customers. It is difficult to always provide a very wide variety of skin colors due to these reasons.

Do you work alone, or do you have a team? Do you have a workplace?
I am working with only my wife without staff and team. The concept of the dolls that I will make is decided in cooperation with my wife. I am doing alone all the work related to doll making such as sculpting doll, doll face-up, body painting, silicone mold production, resin cast, overseas C / S. My wife mainly works in photography, costume making, costume concept, product packaging work. The sanding (surface processing) work of the dolls ordered is usually done with my wife. Due to the above work environment, Because we are making both the production of customer's order dolls and the preparation of the new products, it takes a long time to ship the ordered products to the customers.

What is your process for designing a new doll? What inspires you?
Well .. It is very difficult to explain the process of designing my doll. I don't have a specific concept when I sculpt a doll. I like playing games, anime and movies from my childhood until now. There are no genres and items that I particularly like. I am still very happy to enjoy them (I am a bit sad about not having time to enjoy them as much as I was a child). I also worked as a project manager and designer for a 2D game development company about 15 years ago. Due to my hobby above, when I make a doll, it seems to reflect the style of my favorite animation and game style even if I do not intend. I decide only about the genre (human / Anthro / Animal pet / etc.) I want to make and then begin to sculpting the approximate skeleton of the doll. I usually don't sketch ideas before I sculpt a doll. During the sculpting of the approximate form, I am gradually reminisce of detail. And I make simple graffiti, or just sculpt in the direction my hand want without sketching. ^^; In addition, the costume style and skin color are chosen when the doll is finished. We choose things that match well with the finished doll.

Your doll sizes have very curious names, like Loli, Bebe, Pepe and so on. Does this have an special meaning? How did you decided the name “Dollpamm”?

The name of our company 'DOLLPAMM' is the spelling that transformed the pronunciation of the word 'doll + farm'. From the old days until now, there were many scenes where doll sculptor gave life to their doll' in novel, game, cartoons and movies. Thinking of the word 'farm', living animals and plants are recalled. And farmers who manage farms are also recalled. I imagined that I was a doll farmer, and I make many dolls that seemed to be alive and breathing, and I imagined many dolls playing and breathing in my 'doll-farm'. I have named 'Dollpamm' through the above imagination. Loli and shota names came to follow the name, influenced by Japanese animation. There is no meaning of those names, just naming for fun. Because Bebe is a commonly used word for Baby, it was decided to be a line name for baby dolls. Pepe is a slender, skinny dolls type line at Dollpamm. In Korea, it is called 'bbaebae-hada' to people who are very thin and skinny. I decided to use the spelling "PEPE", whose pronunciation is similar to 'bbae-bbae', as a line name.

You started with small dolls, and now moved towards a very wide range of sizes. What is your favorite type, and why? What plans do you have for the future?
I made my first BJD LOLI-MOMO in a situation where I didn't learn the BJD sculpt and could not see the real BJD. So, It was a great burden to me to challenge to make a big doll from the beginning. I like all the dolls I made, It is very difficult to choose only one my favorite doll of I made dolls. I like the Anthro type of animal and human synthetic form. I will continue to focus on sculpting animal-like human(Anthro doll) beings in the future. Oh! The image of the Dollpamm brand shop has become an online store with a focus on cute images and fresh fantasy images. I like many genres, I also want to make things that are not dolls and dolls of other images. For example, I would like to create a little horror (?), A bizarre feeling, or a serious statue sculpture or doll. I also love the characters of Henry Selick / Tim Burton's creations and creatures like aliens. ^^ So, I'm planning an online site with a different feel, but I don't know when it will be. :D

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
I have been a good time to look back on my own when I start Dollpamm through this interview. It was also a great time to think about the direction that I had to go forward. Once again thank you for giving me the opportunity to interview, I will continue to do my best to make dolls that are more creative and feel the unique personality of Dollpamm dolls.

2. Dr. Mes gives a great interview. His dolls are so cute, I've often wondered how he comes up with their concepts. His Bebe line is especially adorable with the anime eyes combined with cat ears and tails. Making BJDs sounds like a dangerous business--he is not the first sculptor who has reported health issues resulting from working with resin. I love these interviews. Don't ever stop posting them! Happy Easter.

    1. I agree with what you say, but I think that any art-related business is like that. The pressure is too much, and it is not easy to live off of art. But I'm happy you liked the interview! Happy Easter!! :D
