Interview with Geminick

Hello everybody! A new interview is here! Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Jessica, aka Geminick. She is a BJD-maker from Sweden who sells her dolls as Geminick Creations and she was also part of the JointedHearts committee.

This interview has some questions as part of a video, and others as a traditional written interview. All images and footage you'll see were kindly supplied by Jessica and used with her permission. The video is subtitled in English, Spanish and Sweedish, and the written interview is on English and Spanish. I hope you will enjoy this!

Let’s start at the beginning! How did you find out about BJDs and the doll hobby?
This is kind of a funny story actually. One of my online friends, to whom I spoke every day, contacted me on Skype in November 2008 and started talking about these crazy and super-expensive dolls, that I realized I had first seen back in 2005 and really wanted one. Unfortunately, I had forgotten about them up until this point, but my friend reminded me. We talked about the dolls for a little while and she kept wondering what she would do with one if she decided to get one and we were both very skeptical to the entire thing. What could you possibly do with a doll? One week after our conversation, my friend logged on again and told me: “I have done something crazy.” She sent me a link. It led to one of the most beautiful dolls I had ever seen at that point. 4 days later, I contacted her again. I bought one too!

How do you organize your sales? Do you have stock, work with pre-orders, or cast when requested?
So far I have outsourced the casting of my dolls into resin to the very lovely company called Haru Casting in Korea. Their services have been absolutely perfect and I’m very pleased with the results. When the dolls get shipped from Haru casting, I do everything myself however, I’m a one-woman company. I’ve held pre-orders through my website, where customers got to email me and so on, but I recently gave my website a huge make over, so now there’s an integrated webshop! No need to email me anymore! I have also held in stock sales – in fact, there are currently two dolls available for sale up on the website. I have one last Ask left. Also available on the site, is the tan skinned one of a kind version called Haldur, a gorgeous raven-haired Viking son with a completely hand-sewn viking outfit. But mostly, I try to do pre-orders. Unfortunately, I can’t afford to order dolls home for in-stock sales. I do hope to be able to do this in the future, I think it would make things a little less stressful when a new doll is released.

You also draw! And you started a web-comic as well. What can you tell us about this?
Yes, I also draw and paint! Storytelling is something I’ve always loved and intend to bring into my business more and more. The characters I make into dolls all have a part in one of my comic projects. Said comic project is a rather long one, so there’s a lot of planning I need to cram into my everyday work, but I truly hope to launch it as a web comic later this year! As said before, I try not to make any promises though. There’s a huge difference between drawing a beautiful illustration and drawing a comic page – so many things to take into account and to plan for. But I really love it!
Because I’m a huge fan of epic fantasy and the like, my comic will contain many of those elements, everything from floating cities in the sky, which you can only reach via air ships of course, to mysterious elven-like islands and alchemy-loving youths seeking to learn more about their craft at huge and famous universities of magical studies. And my currect doll project, Kostja Moldovan, will be the center of it all.
I am currently doing research to see what kind of style I’d like to give the comic and I’m planning to do a shorter one-shot comic in April for Camp NaNo to try everything out. I don’t want to rush into this, since it’s a very important project for me personally.
The one-shot comic will be quite short and possibly published on Tapas.io, but my precious patrons over on Patreon.com will be the first ones to see and read it. They’ll get to be a part of the entire process, with WIP-posts about the comic and general behind the scenes work.
¡También dibujas! Y has comenzado a planear un web-comic. ¿Qué puedes contarnos al respecto?
¡Sí, también dibujo y pinto! Siempre he adorado e intentado traer más cosas a mi negocio.

You also have participated in BJD cons! And you even helped organize some of them! What can you share about this? Any future plans?
Yes, I was part of the group who first started the Scandinavian BJD convention known as Jointed Hearts! Sadly, I am no longer part of the organizational group because I’m way too busy right now, but it was a really cool and challenging experience! I organized 2,5 conventions – I ended up leaving the third convention in the hands of the new staff halfway through, haha. They did an amazing job however, so it feels good to have left the organization and the convention in their care. Jointed Hearts is, for those of you who might be interested in attending, Scandinavia’s biggest BJD convention, with visitors from all over the world. It has been sponsored by Iplehouse, Ringdoll, Fairyland and many, many more. I myself have sponsored it, too, with one of the original Ask dolls as a contest prize. The convention offers contests, workshops, sales, a visitor’s sales table, mini meet ups and more. If you’re interested, go check them out! I myself am aiming to be part of more cons in the future, but since I’m based in Sweden I’ll start by focusing on the swedish cons, naturally. However, I do want to visit Ldoll Festival in France someday real soon. As a comics artist, I wish to attend conventions focusing on drawn art as well, starting with Stockholm’s International Comics Festival in 2019, if everything goes well. I will be attending the convention in 2018 as well, but only as a visitor.
¡También has participado de convenciones de muñecas! Y has ayudado a organizar varias. ¿Qué puedes compartir sobre esto? ¿Algún plan a futuro?

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
Recently I’ve gotten many messages from customers who compliment me on my work. This gives me the encouragement I need to keep doing what I love. The creation of art, whether it be a doll or an illustration, takes a lot of time – especially the dolls – and sometimes I worry that people forget how hard artists work in order to bring their followers new, pretty things. Please keep this in mind, friends! My current dream is being able to do this full-time. I have already been working full-time for several months, but right now I’m also working part-time at another job to be able to survive. Living off of art is difficult, let me tell you that! So, dear readers, if you’re interested in my work, please go check out my Patreon page and/or my website, these places are the most up to date with my latest releases. If you have any questions, either visit my Twitch channel to ask me on the spot, or contact me through my website.

Thank you very much for doing the interview!
Thank you very much to you, Musume, for inviting me to do this interview, it’s been fun! I’d like to thank you who chose to read this interview and I hope you’ve found some interest in what I’ve had to say, and I’d also like to invite you to come chat with me when I work live, over on Twitch! Whether I’m drawing, sculpting or maybe even gaming on there, I’m always open for dolly discussions and art questions! I hope I’ll see you around! Please stay tuned for the release of Kostja and his comic, I think they’re both turning out pretty well.

And this was all for today! I have no plan on including videos for each interview from now on, but I hope you have enjoyed this special releases! A lot of work went into organizing this, so a special thanks to Geminick for being part of it. And please, do not repost the interview, just share the link!

  1. Thank you for another great interview! I look forward to these every month, and I love it when I learn about an artist I didn't know before. I think I've seen the promo photos of Geminick's dolls on DoA. It's great to see the body (which I love, by the way) and how she sculpts it. Great job, Musume.
