Interview with Frappzilla Studio

Hello everybody! Welcome to another interview. This time, we welcome another repeat: Fee from Frappzilla Studio. I interviewed her back in 2015 when they were only making wigs, but now so much has changed that I felt that a new interview was due.

As always, everything is translated to Spanish as well, and all photos are used with permission. So without further ado... let's start!

Hello! Thank you for doing this interview! Will you introduce yourself to the readers? Hello, thank you so much for having me back! My name is Fee and I am half of the almost-husband-and-wife team that run Frappzilla Studio. The last time I spoke to you, we had recently moved to France having just opened our wig shop but so much has changed since then. We now create dolls from our home and workshop in Devon, England!

How did you decided to start doing your own BJDs? Honestly, I woke up one day and decided that was what we were meant to do. There weren't extensive plans or anything, It just happened. I'm personally a believer in fate and divine timing, so I think that it was just the right time for us to move onto something new. After having done wigs for so many years, I was restless and yearning for the next chapter and I suppose that this was it! I have been in this hobby since I was 15 years old and I'm now 34 but throughout all of these years, I never stopped wanting to create my own doll. However, I suffer from a condition called Dyspraxia (which affects co-ordination) so being able to sculpt by hand has never been an option for me. Thankfully, advances in technology have meant that I've been able to find ways around my problem and through 3D (and an awful lot of CTRL+Z) I've slowly begun to learn how to do things. Alex spent a lot of time understanding 3D Printing and between that, a lot of blood, sweat and tears, as well as lots of help from our friends, we've gotten to where we are now.

¿Cómo decidieron empezar con sus propias BJDs? Honestamente, me levanté un día y decidí que eso era lo que teníamos que hacer. No hubieron planes extensivos, ni nada. Sólo sucedió. Soy una creyente del destino y los planes divinos, así que ese era el momento justo para que nos moviéramos a algo nuevo. Después de haber hecho pelucas por tantos años, estaba esperando el nuevo capítulo ¡y supongo que este era! He sido parte del hobby desde que tenía 15 y ahora tengo 34 años, pero en todos esos años nuca dejé de querer crear mi propia muñeca. No obstante, sufro de una condición llamada disfraxia, que afecta la coordinación, así que nunca he sido capaz de modelar a mano, y no ha sido una opción para mí. Pero los nuevos avances en tecnología han implicado que sea capaz de encontrar alternativas para mi problema, y usando modelado (y muchos Ctrl+Z), lentamente aprendí a hacer las cosas. Alex pasó mucho tiempo entendiendo la impresión 3D y entre todo eso, mucha sangre, sudor y lágrimas, también como mucha ayuda de nuestros amigos, fuimos capaz de estar donde estamos ahora.

You have such a variety already! Could you please explain the sizes and “lines” that you have to the readers? We currently have 3 sizes but are focusing on branching out to more very soon. Currently our Dandelion Moon collection is our MSD line, inspired by far off galaxies, cosmic energies and the stars. They stand at about 40cm tall and four heads are available for preorder soon, with two more that will be available later in the year. (Around May). The Dandelion Moon dolls consist of Lupi (The wolf), Lyra (a human but with optional very large lop bunny ears), Alula (a mouse, inspired by one of my favourite childhood movies, An American Tail) and Delphini (who is an aquatic creature) all of which have names based on stars. There is also Vega (A Scaley girl who was originally supposed to be an armadillo but now appears more like reptile or dragon queen) and Polaris (a sweet little fennec fox with really large ears) who will be joining the line up soon. The pear shaped body has a traditional MSD sized lower half, with feet and top half closer to the size of Minifee but it has interesting features such as the thigh comets for elastic channels and the holes for the feet are tiny stars. There are also 11 pairs of hands because I think that hands always add so much expression and personality. The Moons were designed to be entirely gender neutral creatures but a small bust option is also available; as well as both, a single jointed thigh and a peanut joint for more posing capability.

Actualmente la colección Dandelion Moon es nuestra MSD, inspirada en galaxias lejanas, energías cósmicas y estrellas. Tienen 40cm de alto, y hay cuatro cabezas disponibles para encargar muy pronto, con dos disponibles a final de año (cerca de Mayo). Las Dandelion Moon son Lupi (la loba), Lyra (una humana pero con orejas opcionales de conejo), Alula (una ratona, inspirada en una de mis películas de niños infantiles favoritas, An American Tail) y Delphini (una criatura acuática), todas tienen nombres basados en estrellas. También está Vega (una chica de escalas que originalmente iba a ser un armadillo, pero ahora parece más ser una dragona) y Polaris (una zorra fennec con orejas enormes) que se va a unir muy pronto. El cuerpo de pera tiene caderas de MSD, pero la parte de arriba es más cercana a las Minifee, pero con cosas locas como cometas en los canales elásticos y los huecos para los pies son estrellas. También hay 11 pares de manos, porque creo que las manos agregan mucha expresión y personalidad. Las Moon fueron diseñadas para ser de género neutral, pero una opción de busto pequeño está disponible. Así como también, muslos de articulaciones simples y dobles para mayor movimientos.

[continued…] We then have our Dandelion Bloom line. Where the Moons are more cosmically themed, our Blooms are inspired by things a little closer to home; by plants and wildlife of Devon and the occasional mystical creature. The idea is that they are born in the Garden of Imagination, taken care of by a future Bloom, Sprout, who watches over the garden, feeding the land with a certain kind of care and magic that eventually brings the plants and animals, to life. These 13.5cm dolls are released once a month in limited quantities and are made by just Alex and I, in our workshop! They are Resin 3D Printed kits, designed for the customer to sand and string themselves and a monthly tutorial video is uploaded to our YouTube channel to show everyone exactly what to do.

Las Moon tienen una temática espacial, las Bloom están inspiradas por cosas más cercanas a casas, como las plantas y la vida salvaje de Devon y alguna criatura mística. La idea es que nacen en el Jardín de la Imaginación, donde las cuida una Bloom futura, Sprout, que cuida el jardín, alimentando la tierra con una gran cantidad de magia que eventualmente le da vida a las plantas y animales. Estas muñecas de 13.5cm salen una vez por mes en cantidades limitadas, y sólo las hacemos Alex y yo en nuestro estudio. Son kits impresos en 3D, diseñados para que el cliente lije y tense por si mismo. Subimos un video tutorial por mes en nuestro canal para que cada uno sepa qué hacer.

[continued...] We wanted to offer the doll community something incredibly affordable after the year that everyone suffered in 2020. We know many people lost their income or had to cut back on their hobby due to financial implications caused by the pandemic and we just wanted to find a way to thank the community that has supported us through all of these years. They fit into OB11 tops, skirts and shoes and shorts/pants if they're elasticated at the waist so there's quite a lot of clothing options out there for them already. But I do know that @moriyarns on IG will be making some TAIL shorts which will be super cute! Our Blooms all have unique concepts and colours (Even Ombre tails!), starting with Snowdrop Winterbloom, our January doll. She was designed to represent hope, just like snowdrops do in the middle of winter; as a reminder that happier days and sunshine are coming, even when the world is at its darkest. We felt that this was an important message to begin our year considering the current global circumstances. The Blooms so far have cost no more than $70 and can be a great way for people to get into the doll hobby. Many of our customers have told me how they aim to learn how to string their dolls, or learn how to paint with their Bloom, because of the low cost, it makes learning and attempting new things much less scary. I have always struggled to really 'play hard' with my more expensive dolls, always opting to take the more affordable ones on adventures, so I hope that the lower price tag will encourage a lot of creative opportunities and imaginative play, no matter how old you are. It makes me so happy to see that they are sparking creativity in others and the community has been overwhelmingly receptive to the idea, so much so that I often find myself in need of a pinch to prove that it's all real. We have already planned out the entire year of Bloom dolls and while it is a lot of work to prepare a new doll (or two, or even more) each month, its proved to be so incredibly rewarding and I'm enjoying the process so much; continuously learning new things and pushing the limits on what is possible. Next month we'll meet a little ram, inspired by a pet sheep that we once had called Chester. We saved him as a lamb from death row and fed him by a bottle. In the end, I'm sure that he convinced himself he was a dog as he was always in the kitchen and being a playful little thing. We originally had another doll scheduled for March but I happened to make myself a little Cow/Ox in celebration of Chinese New Year but due to popular demand, we've included them for March too. We'll get to see hooves and horns for the first time as well, which is really exciting! For all of the people that manage to get one bloom a month, a special bloom awaits at the end of the year as a collection prize. Custom colours will be an option for those that managed to grab every single one!

[continuado...] Queríamos ofrecerle algo a la comunidad de BJDs que fuera barato y asequible luego del año que pasamos en 2020. Sabemos que muchos perdieron l ingreso o tuvieron que recortar el hobby por problemas financieros causados por la pandemia, y queríamos encontrar una forma de agradecerle a la comunidad que nos ha apoyado durante todos estos años. Entran en la ropa de OB11, tops, polleras, zapatos e incluso pantalones si tienen elástico en la cintura, así que hay muchas opciones para su ropa. Pero se que “moriyarns en Instagram estará haciendo algunos pantalones para colas que son muy adorables. Nuestras Bloom tienen conceptos y colores únicos (incluso con colas de colores), empezando con Snowdrop Winterbloom (nota: algo, como “copo de nieve florecido en el invierno”), nuestra muñeca para Enero. Me hace feliz ver que están disparando la creatividad en otros y que la comunidad ha sido tan receptiva a la idea, tanto que a veces me tengo que pinchar para demostrarme que es verdad. Ya tenemos planeado todo el año de Blooms, y mientras ha sido mucho trabajo preparar una muñeca (o dos, o incluso más) cada mes, ha probado dar muchas recompensas y he disfrutad mucho el proceso, aprendiendo cosas nuevas y empujando los límites de lo posible. El siguiente mes vamos a prensar a una cabrita, inspirada por una oveja mascota que una vez llamamos Chester. Lo salvamos de pequeña de una fila de muerte y lo alimentamos de una botella. Al final, creo que se convenció que era un perro, porque siempre estaba en la cocina y jugando con cosas. Originalmente teníamos otra muñeca planeada para Marzo, pero terminé haciéndome una Vaca-Toro en celebración del Año Nuevo Chino, así que por demanda popular, la incluímos en Marzo. ¡Ya veremos si los cuernos y patas por primera vez, lo que me entusiasma mucho! Para todas las personas que se las arreglan para tener un Bloom por mes, una Bloom especial las espera al final del año como premio por la colección. Los colores personalizados son una opción para esos que se las arreglaron para comprar cada una.

[continued…] We then moved onto Clover Littlefoot, a grumpy, bee eating clover boy to give you luck and his friend Asteria Foxglove, a pink heart fox, designed for Valentines day! The pair were meant to represent 'Luck in Love' but not just romantically but in all forms of love; be that friendship, with family, our pets and perhaps the hardest of all, the love we have for ourselves. Clover has the ability to balance on their tail so is a lot of fun to play with. Our final line is the Big Bloom line, which are cast versions of our tiny Blooms in a YOSD size with a larger, more MSD sized head. They'll be available throughout the year as well through seasonal preorders. We know that being just two people we might not be able to fulfil every Bloom request so we've made the larger line for those that might miss out and because, well, who doesn't love a cute, chunkyYOSD?

[continuado…] Luego nos movemos a Clover Littlefoot, un chico trébol que come abejas, que te va a dar mucha suerte, y su amigo Asteria Foxglove, un lobo de corazón rosado, diseñado para el día de los enamorados. El par estaba pensado para representar “la suerte en el amor”, pero no solamente romático, pero en todas las formas del amor, ya sea amistar, familia, con las mascotas y, quizás la más difícil, con nosotros mismos. Clover tiene la habilidad de balancear todo en su cola, así que es muy divertido de jugar. Nuestra línea final son los Big Bloom, que son variaciones de tamaño de las Bloom en tamaño YoSD, junto con una vabeza más grande tamaño MSD. Van a estar disponibles todo el año y con encargos de temporada. Sabemos que somos dos personas, y que podemos no ser capaces de completar todos los pedidos, así que hicimos la línea más larga para aquellos que se los pierden, y porque… ¿a quién no les gusta una YoSD más gruesita?

Your dolls are lovely and those ears!!. What are your artist goals with that? The ears, yes haha. I honestly don't really know what happened. I've never been someone who had fantasy dolls, but as I mentioned before, it has felt just like something was guiding us in this direction. Back when I did pixel art (And for a while attempted digital art but didn't do very well haha) I was very much in love with the concept of Kemonomimi; humanoid creatures with animal features. So I think I just ended up creating the things that I wanted to exist but didn't, yet. When I was learning how to 3D sculpt, I was watching a lot of The Dark Crystal on Netflix and I think that inspired me an awful lot too. After some fun brainstorming sessions with my best friend, Gaz, the Dandelion Moon dolls now have extensive lore and an entire whimsical world that they come from. So even though they didn't initially start off with that purpose, they've become something so special, with those ears acting as a baseline for their story and their world. You can read the lore as a highlight on our Instagram Stories if you're interested! Personally, I've found it really lovely to be able to create something with someone who is full of a million exciting stories and plot ideas. He's a great writer but I think perhaps he doesn't value his work as much as I do, so if you do read it and like what you see, let me know because I'd love to pass the message on. The ears are a mix of both attached and detached depending on the design (we've got to make sure that they make sense for wigs, of course!) I know a lot of people prefer a human doll but there's something about having them attached that just feels so much more magical. Lyra's are entirely optional as she has human ears and HUGE magnetic bunny ears but Alula, Lupi, Delphini, Polaris and Vega, all have attached ears that should sit comfortably under wig cap lines. Initially I wanted to offer wigs for them but I'm going to be taking a bit of a break from wigs due to health reasons. I'm sure I'll be back in no time though! The Blooms are also a mixture of magnetic and attached ears but also heavily feature TAILS which honestly, are my favourite things ever and optional tails may end up as possibilities for Moons too! The Blooms also have monthly wig kits available, of which we'll make corresponding video tutorials on how to create your own wigs, even for the ones with more unusual ears, like Snowdrop.

¡Sus muñecas son adorables con esas orejas! ¿Cuáles son tus objetivos de artista con eso? Las orejas, sí. Honestamente, no sé que pasó. Nunca he sido alguien que tenga muñecas de fantasía, pero como mencioné antes, se setía como que algo nos guiaba en esta dirección. Cuando hice pixel art (e intenté arte digital, pero no me quedó bien) estaba enamorada con el concepto de Komonomimi, criaturas humanas con características de animales. Así que creo que terminé creando cosas quería que existieran pero que no estaban. Cuando aprendí a modelar en 3D estaba mirando The Dark Crystal en Netflix, y creo que eso me inspiró mucho también. Luego de algunas sesiones de ideas con mi mejor amigo Gaz, las Dandelion Moon ahora tienen una gran historia y todo un mundo fantástico de donde vienen. Así que aunque no iniciamos con ese propósito, se han convertido en algo especial, con las orejas siendo una base para su historia y su mundo. ¡Pueden leer la historia en el resaltado de Instagram, si les interesa! En lo personal, he encontrado adorable poder crear algo con alguien está tan lleno de miles de historias increíbles. Él es un gran escritor pero creo que no valora tanto su trabajo como yo lo hago, así que léanlo y me dicen, quiero saber qué opinan así puedo pasar el mensaje. Esas orejas son una mezcla de fijas y magnéticas, dependiendo del diseño. Tenemos que asegurarnos que tienen sentido para las pelucas, por supuesto. Conozco muchos que prefieren las muñecas humanas, pero hay algo de tener las orejas fijas que las hacen más mágicas. What is your workflow? Do you do everything by yourself? Oh gosh, I hope one day to be skilled enough to be able to do it all on my own but I don't think thats realistic yet at all haha. I get a lot of 3D help from my beautiful friend Chelsea (known as quirkyqritters on IG and Etsy) who has taught me SO many things and thankfully helps me fix any technical errors. She helps us with our Bloom releases, does some concept art and is what we call our "tail technician" for the Blooms. We'd not be able to do any of this without her. She's also the best brainstorm buddy. My ideas are often a little bit 'out there' but she seems to operate on a similar wavelength so I'm just forever thankful for her in my life. Please go and see the little dolls that she creates too. She's a creative genius! Sadly due to the dyspraxia I'm not really in a position to do my own faceups but we one day hope to collaborate with someone! I guess we will see what happens! Other than that, my Mum (who goes by Mama Frapp now!) spent her pandemic lockdowns learning how to make resin eyes! So now we are able to offer eyes for all of our dolls. She will be opening a section on our store for her eyes in more extensive sizes. A few days before New Year, I wrote out a massive list of the Bloom themes I wanted to make each month. I showed the list to Chelsea and we thought about how we could make some of them work. Since the body was something that was already made in 2020, we knew it would mostly be focused on faces, ears and tails. We tackle them month by month now, but most of the dolls are made up until the end of April already. My favourite things to work on are faces. The Blooms now use a faceplate system so that we can have multiple expressions for each doll. I'll then mix the desired resin colour, Alex will print the prototypes and we can iron out any problems. Finally we'll tease them on Instagram the day before release and they go up for sale the next day with their matching wig kits and Mama Frapp eye selections. Once orders close, we'll begin production. There are quite a lot of steps involved, from the resin mixing, the printing, the support removal, curing, packing and of course we have to make the videos too. There is a lot of work for each doll but if they are loved at the end of it, its worth all of that.

¿Cuál es tu flujo de trabajo? ¿Hacen todo por su cuenta? Oh dios, espero alguna vez ser tan habilidosa para ser capaz de hacer todo por mi cuenta, pero no creo que eso sea realista por ahora. Mi amiga Chelsea me ayuda mucho con todo lo 3D (la conocen como quirkygritters en IG y Etsy), quien me ha ensañado TANTAS cosas muy útiles y me ayuda a arreglar los errores técnicos. Ella nos ayuda con nuestras releases de Bloom, hace algunos conceptos, y es lo que llamamos “encargada de las colas” para las Blooms. No seríamos capaz de hacer nada sin ella. Es la mejor compañera para pensar. Mis ideas a veces están un poco desparramadas, pero ella piensa de la misma manera así que estoy agradecida de tenerla en mi vida. ¡Por favor, vean las pequeñas muñecas que crea, es una genia! Lamentablemente, debido a mi dispraxia no estoy en una posición de hacer mis maquillajes, pero alguna vez espero colaborar con alguien. Ya veremos que pasa. Aparte de eso, mi madre (ahora se llama Mama Frapp) se pasó el encierro de la pandemia aprendiendo a hacer ojos de uretano. Así que ahora podemos ofrecer ojos para todas nuestras muñecas. Ella estará abriendo una sección en nuestra tienda para ojos en otros tamaños. Algunos días antes del año nuevo, yo escribí una lista enorme de tomas de Bloom que quería hacer cada mes. Le mostré la lista a Chelsea y juntas pensamos en cómo podría hacer algo del trabajo. Dado que el cuerpo ya estaba hecho en 2020, sabíamos que podíamos centrarnos más en los rostros, orejas y colas. Los haremos mes a mes, pero la mayoría hasta Abril ya están completas. Mis parte favorita es trabajar en los rostros. Las Blooms ahora usan faceplates, así pueden tener muchas expresiones para cada muñeca. Luego mezclo el color de resina que me gustaría, Alex imprime los protipos, y sacamos todos los problemas. Finalmente, los mostramos un poco por Instagram, y salen a la venta pronto con pelucas y ojos de Mama Frapp. Una vez que los encargos se terminan, empezamos la producción. Aquí hay muchos pasos, desde mezclar la resina, imprimir, quitar los soportes, curar, empaquetar, y tenemos que hacer los videos. Hay mucho trabajo en cada muñeca, pero nos gusta todo, y eso importa.

What are your plans moving forward? We have so many things up our sleeves that we're really excited to share and work on! For starters, we have an entire year of Blooms planned out, a V2 body thats taller, thinner body, with a tail option for Dandelion Moon. A footwear line is coming too! We have a Blythe sized BJD in the works because I am really into all of the clothing options from that size range. Hopefully we'll be seeing those around late spring or early summer! We are also planning doll collaborations with Quirkyqritters, with tiny Bloom friends that will also be available in kit form alongside our monthly offerings. We will meet our first one of those in Mid-March! Finally, we're also branching out even further with our shop that will feature Wooden BJD Diorama and furniture kits. Our first one, Bloom Cottage will be available soon and its really really cute! I really wanted to start off with a cottage, inspired by special memories shared with my mum, which I honestly believe helped shape my rather wild imagination. When I was a little girl, every night, almost without fail, she'd lay on my bed with me, make me close by eyes and would describe this magical "cottage in the glen" which she'd tell me to create in my mind. It became our secret happy place but also I think helped me develop my visualisation skills and creative mind a lot from a young age. The cottage in the glen and its little garden of imagination have been at the centre of my bloom world, so it made the most sense to start with something that had a special meaning.

¿Cuáles son sus planes hacia el futuro? Tenemos tantas cosas en la manga que estamos muy entusiasmados para empezar a trabajar. Para empezar, tenemos un año entero de Blooms planeadas, un cuerpo que es más alto y delgado, y una opción de cola para Dandelion Moon. ¡Incluso una línea de zapatos! Tenemos una muñeca tipo Blythe en veremos, porque realmente me gustan todas las opciones de ropa que vienen en ese rango. Afortunadamente veremos esas por primavera o verano. También estamos planeando colaboraciones con Quikygritters, con pequeñas Bloom que van a estar disponibles como un kit junto con nuestras ofertas mensuales. ¡Veremos las primeras a mediado de Marzo! Finalmente, también estamos dividiéndonos un poco más con la tienda, y vamos a traer Dioramas de BJDs de madera, y kits de muebles. El primero, Bloom Cottage, estará disponible muy pronto y es realmente bonito. Realmente quería empezar con un cottage inspirado por todas las memorias especiales compartidas con mi madre, que honestamente creo que ayudaron a disparar mi imaginación. Cuando era una niña, cada noche, sin faltar, ella se acostaba en mi cama conmigo, me hacía cerrar los ojos y me describía este cottage, que me hacía imaginar. Luego se convirtió en mi lugar secreto seguro y me ayudó a desarrollar mis habilidades de visualización y mi mente creativa desde una temprana edad. El cottage y su jardín han sido el centro de mi mundo imaginativo, así que tenía sentido empezar con algo que tuviera un significado especial.

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us? I just want to take a minute to thank the BJD community who have supported us since we first started to sell wigs, 6 years ago. Working on wigs and now our doll projects, have been our entire world since we first started in 2015 and although sometimes it has been painful and difficult, I feel that we've both grown so much as people and so much in terms of creativity. The community is always so inspiring, with beautiful projects and so much talent at every corner and its a pleasure to be a part of. I cannot imagine my life without you guys and your constant enthusiasm and encouragement are a driving force in my life. It's the biggest motivator for me, so when I say thank you, I mean it from the bottom of my heart. Another giant thank you to Chelsea because again, none of this would be possible without her.

Finalmente, ¿hay algo más que te gustaría compartir con nosotros? Simplemente quería tomar un minuto para agradecerle a la comunidad de BJDs que nos ha apoyado desde que empezamos con las pelucas, seis años atrás. Trabajando en pelucas y ahora con nuestros proyectos de muñecas, esto ha sido todo nuestro mundo desde que empezamos en 2015, y aunque a veces ha sido doloroso y difícil, siento que hemos crecido mucho como personas y en términos de creatividad. La comunidad siempre inspira tanto, con temas y proyectos y mucho talento en cada esquina y es un placer ser parte de ello. No podría imaginar mi vida sin ustedes y su constante entusiasmo y aliento que son una fuerza directora en mi vida. Es el mayor motivador para mí, así que cuando digo gracias, lo digo de corazón. Otras gracias enormes para Chelsea porque de nuevo, nada sería posible sin ella.
