Interview with Ms. Steinart

Hello everybody! Here we are in another month of interviews. Please welcome Magda, aka Ms. Steinart. She does some amazing faceups and urethane eyes, so I hope you'll enjoy this interview. As always, it is in both English and Spanish, and the photos are used with permission.

Hello and thank you for doing the interview! Would you introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi! Thank you so much for this opportunity! I'm Magda, though on social media I go by the name of Ms. Stein. I'm a faceup and eye artist.
¡Hola! ¡Gracias por hacer la entrevista! ¿Te presentarías a los lectores?
¡Hola!

Faceup commission for @isumi.k

Let’s start with the basics. Do you have artistic background? How did you meet BJDs?
To be honest, I was always quite a creative child and loved to sculpt with clay, draw and paint, but I think that the main thing that pushed me straight to working with dolls were porcelain dolls in particular. I remember that these dolls were still quite popular in the 90s, and when I was a child I loved to visit a toy shop and just stare at them. They were something totally different for me, like a kind of luxury. Unfortunately, my parents never bought me any porcelain dolls, as they were quite expensive at the time, so I just left it in my dream zone. Even if I never bought one, I still had dolls in my head and heart. In my late teenage years, around 2009, I decided to make one for myself. I started to look for information online and any tutorials, when by accident I found a strangely realistic looking doll, described as ball jointed. I remember it was Ducan (DOD). Then I saw more dolls and it just pulled me in completely. I started to do more research, made a blog, found a Polish bjd community and joined them in 2010. I also attended a few doll meetings. I saved up my money and bought my first doll in 2011. Since then, my life has always somehow just been about dolls. It also influenced me in my education path and I decided to study Fine Arts. I was also taking some extra Sculpturing lectures with other groups. Even my diploma project was a short stop motion film featuring dolls. So besides having a true and strong passion for art, I also have a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts.

How did you started offering face-ups commissions? Do you work with commission slots?
Ha! That's actually funny, because I never planned to be only a faceup artist, as I want to create in other fields of art as well. At first, I was just doing faceups for my dolls, then a dear friend of mine noticed some kind of potential in me and I accepted my first commission from her. This one request built up my faith in my own skills a bit and I found that the painting process was also a pleasure. After this, more people were asking me to paint their dolls, and in 2012 I decided to open local commissions in Poland. I'm actually very grateful to the Polish BJD collectors and friends, as by letting me paint their dolls I was able to practise more and develop my skills. My services were open until 2015, which turned out to be a really busy year, as I had planned to release my own dolls, but then decided to move out to the United Kingdom. I had to pause everything while I tried to find a job and a place to live and settle. That was quite a sad time, as I spent 4 years without being able to express my creativity. Then, in 2019, I was ready to come back and reopen my services. This time I decided to go further and become an international artist.
I don't think that my journey is settled with just faceup commissions, as I'm still changing a few things and looking for the best way to offer my services and paint dolls. Right now, I have a simple scheme where I open my commissions for 10 slots. After accepting all the requests I just wait for the heads to arrive. Completely filling my slots usually takes a few hours (last time it was 1.5h), so it's better to prepare and fill in a form before I announce an opening. Then, usually within two weeks, I have all the heads in my workshop, give them a bath, remove the old faceups if required, add some protective layers of sealant and then I'm ready start the painting process.
However, I don't work on all the heads at the same time. It would be quite confusing if I would have to. Firstly, I sort all the applications and then prioritise the natural faceups or single head commissions over glam or special/resin match and other multiple, or more demanding faceups or trades. The last batch was almost 40 heads and with a few parts like hands, so I'm quite busy and patience is greatly appreciated.
Generally, I separate the heads into small groups of 3-4 and then work on them until they are finished. I deliver 3 sets of photos. First just with blush and eyebrow shape for the customer to approve the base. Then I work on the smaller details and the second set of photos is usually when everything (included in the request) is done, but still haven't added the gloss or eyelashes. This is the last stage, where I can add some small details, and then the last set is the finished doll with gloss and eyelashes. Then I send the summaries and after receiving payment Phil ships the finished commissions back. So you see, I'm working with 3-4 heads at once from the whole batch and then when those are finished I move onto the next 3-4 heads.
I have really invested a lot in my studio and I always buy the best quality materials. As well as faceups I also offer hand and feet blushing, resin match, temporary piercing and small modifications/ seam lines sanding service. For a full list of my services you can check my blog.
¿Cómo empezaste a ofrecer comisiones de maquillajes? ¿Trabajas con espacios?
¡Ja!

You also work do tattoos and blushing! What can you share about this? Is it more difficult than faceups?
Yes, I also offer tattoos and blushing. What can I say, other than blushing is definitely easier than tattoos or faceups. However, it's still quite time and resource consuming, as I try to get as realistic a look as I can, including veins and skin textures if requested. Tattoos are difficult and require very still and controlled hands and full focus. I don't use pencils to do tattoos, everything is painted by hand and brush.
Maybe this will sound a bit funny, but every time I must paint a difficult tattoo (like typography) I feel like I've just run a marathon. I need my hand to be able to flow as much as possible and I even forget to breath sometimes. So you can imagine how funny it looks when I finish one line and then try to catch my breath after a minute of not breathing at all.
I started doing tattoos for commissions in 2020, as I was a bit apprehensive of doing them. That doesn't mean that I didn’t have any experience with tattoos before, as I had painted some on my own dolls. One of my private dolls had a moth tattoo on its face. Now I can see that being afraid of painting tattoos for commissions was a bit unnecessary, but of course I need to be very focussed and not rush my work if I want the tattoo to look very good.
I also think that changing sealants from MSC to a water based one as well as using an airbrush helped me a lot.

You also sell urethane eyes! What sizes do you offer? Do you sell them as commissions or in-stock?
Yes! I also create and sell urethane eyes. I mean, I make them, but it's my partner Phil who runs the eyeshop. Phil is responsible for selling them, sending summaries, printing, and sticking labels, packing and shipping the orders. He also ships faceup commissions and receives all the parcels as well as making all the phone calls to the post office when needed. The first few batches I was running by myself, but Phil recently joined me, so if you order any eyes you can expect to talk to him rather than me. However, if you will need me, just let him know! I found it a bit too demanding to run by myself. I mean generally being a faceup artist and eyemaker is already a very demanding and responsible job, but doing everything is a bit too much for one person.
Regarding eyes... I'm totally in love with this kind of crafting. I actually find it even more relaxing than faceups! I was always struggling with having enough eyes for myself, so I just decided to try my best and start making them myself. I didn't plan to sell them at first, but I think they turned out very good!
There are 3 options for purchasing eyes. Firstly, you can request them if you get your faceup slot, and then freely combine shipping for your heads and eyes. However, I don't make eyes based on what people ask me to make. I only offer eyes from an existing design that I have already created. So the customer can choose a colour and size from a list and also a dome. Another way to purchase eyes was buying them in stock. I have my little shop on my website, and sometimes update it with eyes in various sizes and colours. Unfortunately, my stock of eyes is very limited. There is also a third option which I'm currently working on - eye pre-orders. These pre-orders will be open for a few days for selected designs. The customer may request a colour from the pre-order selection and then choose what size they want. I'm going to announce more information soon about pre-orders.
Currently, my eyes cost 35 GBP per pair, but this may change in the future. I recently stopped producing eyes, as I wanted to test some new ingredients, but for now I'm satisfied with the results. I want to make my eyes look very realistic, but also have some surreal spark/ detail inside. I have a lot of projects I want to make and they will be available to see soon with the future pre-orders. I'm planning to offer different colours of eyeballs and different shapes of pupils as well! I recently made a pair of demonic eyes that will be available to purchase in the pre-orders. So far I offer eyes in sizes from 6mm to 22mm, but some of these sizes haven't been officially introduced yet, but soon will be!
Link to the shop and more info and sizes you can find here.
Right now I'm working with Phil and between faceup commissions we are casting eyebases. The plan is to prepare at least 250-300 pairs of eyebases, to make sure that we can cut off the waiting time for the eyes when the preorders become available. Phil is mostly responsible for cleaning and preparing the silicone moulds and I'm casting and finishing them afterwards. The plan is to be prepared before the end of May, so fingers crossed!

I’m very curious about this one… what does your nickname “mssteinart” means?
Oh my, actually mssteinart is just the name of my Instagram. I could have made something like mssteinfaceup or mssteindolls (which I have and this is the account with my personal collection), but I don't feel like I want to limit myself to only one field in art. I still have a lot of plans and projects including casting my own dolls, so mssteinART seems the best and most versatile option, because I love to create art. However, I refer to myself as Ms. Stein everywhere and this is quite an old art pseudonym I made when I was a teenager, and I was just drawing a lot. You could say that it sounds like Ms. Stein = Miss Stein, but actually it's not. "Ms" is just my name initials and Stein was just my favourite German word, which to me sounds very beautiful. Although, I don't mind if someone refers to me as Miss Stein. It still sounds nice. "Stein" also means stone, so I can relate it to my work as well, whether it's my photography, drawing or painting, as they are usually dark, melancholic and cold... so just like a stone I assume. If you are interested, you can take a look at my personal Instagram account @mssteindolls

Do you have a workplace to share with us? How do you organize to do face-ups?
Oh I do! My workshop is just a spare bedroom in our (mine and Phil's) house. I spend most of the time in there on faceups, painting, sculpting, casting eyes, or doing digital stuff. Just anything, and literally everything is in there. I really love my workshop. It's kind of my own space in the cosmos. I wanted to make sure my workspace has the best conditions to work smoothly and efficiently. So first I need to make sure it's clean, free from dust and well ventilated. Unfortunately, working with sealant turns everything white and dusty, so cleaning is the first and most important step. I also have to pay attention to the levels of humidity and the temperature in this room, so I have dehumidifiers as well as temperature and humidity meters to make sure that the air is always right for the faceups to dry in. I use a lamp which imitates daylight, which makes it easier to work in the shorter daylight hours of winter, so I can work anytime and not worry about my faceups looking different. I usually always leave the blinds drawn, as I want to make sure that my customers heads' are never in direct sunlight.
On my main desk I keep the stuff I use the most often; so pastels, a few paints which I use the most, my airbrush, pallettes, water, my lamps and brushes. The rest of the paints, some fancy pastels and other materials, are on the second shelf on the left. Sometimes my eye tools are also located there, but only when I'm actually working on them.
I would like to share a little picture of my workshop. There are still a lot of things I would like to change or buy, but so far I feel very comfortable in this space. So yep, here is where the dolls are waiting for a faceup.

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
I would like to truly thank you for this opportunity, I feel very honoured! I also want to thank the readers and my dear customers for supporting me and my art. It means a lot to me, and I really enjoy sharing my work with people and seeing their content as well! Being part of the doll community makes me incredibly happy. Talking with people, getting to know them or exchange experiences about dolls or other things is so refreshing. I really appreciate it!
Last of all, I also want to announce that as well as the eye pre-orders, which I plan for late May, early June, I'm also going to announce another giveavay possibly closer to the autumn. More information will be available on my Instagram soon. So keep an eye out! :>

  2. Thank you for the interview! I had to laugh about the statement with the marathon- I know what she means. Holding one's breath can be exhausting :D. It's funny to see the facial script- I believe I was the first who did that, and after I posted pictures of the face with words others started to appear on social media and the forums. I love the green eyebrows- and the workspace.
