Interview with PuppetTalesDolls

Hello everybody! New month is here and we have another interview! Please, welcome Kyohe and Kaya from PuppetTalesDolls--they are two very skilled customisers from Brazil. As always, all images are used with permission, and the interview is both in English and Spanish. Enjoy!

Hello and thank you for doing the interview! Would you introduce yourself to our readers? Hi, we're a store formed by two girls, Kyohei, who is the dollmaker and customizer and Kaya, who takes care of the customer service, wigs and clothes. We're married made 10 years and have a lot of love for this amazing work wich is made our customers dreams come true! We're from Brazil, living in Curitiba, Paraná at the moment. As we're two different people, we'll answer with our names when the question is only for one of us.

Hola, somos una tienda formada por dos chicas, Kyohei que hace las muñecas y las customiza, y Kaya, que se encarga del servicio al cliente, pelucas y ropas. Estamos casadas desde hace 10 años, y tenemos mucho amor por este increíble trabajo que es hacer realidad los sueños de nuestros clientes. Somos de Brasil, viviendo Curitiba, Paraná en este momento. Como somos dos personas diferentes, vamos a responder con el hombre cuando la pregunta es para una sola.

Let’s start with the basics. How did you start with Blythes and BJDs? Do you have artistic background? Kyohei: I don't know how, but I fell on the Dream of doll page and started seeing BJDs and I really liked the dolls, after that, I started researching other stores of BJDs, so I ended up finding a video of a Chinese woman painting a head, I found incredible and I was impressed that it was possible to do. In spite of everything, I let it go because it was not possible for me at the time, since I was very young, I always thought it would never be possible to work with it in Brazil because BJD was very expensive at the time and was very scarce. After a few years, I fell on YouTube again watching customization videos, but at that time I was older, I had more notion, so I commented to my wife that I always wanted to do this. My wife said "try to do it", but I didn't have any BJD, so I took advantage of that she liked Monster High, which was something more affordable, and started to customize. What I fell in love with in the case was not the dolls themselves, of course the BJDs are very beautiful, but I fell more in love with the fact that it is possible to create and modify in different ways. For example, I never really liked blythes, but when I started working, they became one of my favorite doll models. When I started customizing Monster Highs, which I also never really liked, but I liked what was possible to transform, it was only then that I was able to buy my first BJD, which was a Migidoll Miho, it was the first BJD that I was able to customize. From then on, my wife encouraged me to make a page, because my desire was just to do it, I had never thought of it as a job, but I created it and everyone started to like the customization of the Monster Highs, and Miho ended up giving space for customizing other BJDs, so the first customer BJD I received was a Bisou from FairyLand, I spent a lot of time customizing only Monster Highs and a few BJDs until I fell into the temptation to make a Blythe. I did the first carving, scared a lot with it thinking that I would end up crashing the doll, but as I had already bought a faceplate to make it, I thought "I'm going to do it!", I did it, we posted it on the page and ended up having more public, that way, we started to accept it for customization too. Every time someone came up with a blythe I thought "my God what am I going to do?" haha, but nowadays it ends up being almost automatic, I like to do it. About art, I always like to do makeup, but for the other people, for me I always do the basics. We used to do cosplay, so I had to have a lot of makeup and hair skills, this helped me a little with the custom.

Comencemos con lo básico. ¿Cómo conocieron las Blythes y las BJDs? ¿Tienen alguna formación artística? Kyohei: No sé cómo, pero me enamoré de las Dream of Dolls y empecé a ver BJDs. Realmente me gustaban las muñecas, así que terminé encontrando un video de una mujer China pintando una cabecita y me pareció increíble. Estaba impresionada que pudiera hacer algo así. A pesar de todo, lo dejé pasar porque era muy joven, y siempre pensé que no iba a ser posible en Brasil porque las BJDs son muy caras y en ese momento eran escasas. Luego de unos años, recaí en YouTube a mirar videos de customizaciones, y ya tenía mucha más ideas, así que le comenté a mi esposa que siempre había querido hacerlo. Ella me dijo “inténtalo”, pero no tenía una BJD, así que me aproveché de que le gustaban las Monster High, que eran mucho más asequibles para empezar. Lo que me enamoró no eran las muñecas en sí mismas, por supuesto que las BJDs son hermosas, pero me enamoró el hecho de que es posible crear y modificar en muchas formas. Por ejemplo, nunca me habían gustado las Blythes, pero cuando empecé a trabajar, se volvieron de mis modelos favoritos. Cuando empecé con las Monster Highs, que tampoco nunca me gustaron mucho, me encantó la posibilidad de transformar, pero sólo fue cuando adquirí mi primera BJD (un Migidoll Miho) que pude customizar una. Desde ahí, mi esposa me animó a hacer una página, porque mi deseo era hacerlo pero nunca había pensado en ofrecerlo como un trabajo. Pero la creé y a muchos les empezó a gustar lo que así, así que eventualmente Miho le dio espacio a varias otras BJDs. El primer cliente que recibí fue una Bisou de FaryLand. Pasé mucho tiempo sólo customizando MonsterHighs y unas pocas BJDs, hasta que me tenté con una Blythe. Hice el primer tallado, asustada de que podría dañar la muñeca, pero había comprado una cabecita para hacerlo así que pensé “voy a hacerlo!” y lo hice, poniendo en la página mis resultados. Empecé a tener más publicidad, aceptando esos encargos. Cada vez que alguien se me acercaba con una Blythe, yo pensaba “oh por favor qué haré?”, jaja, pero ahora termina siendo casi automático y me gusta hacerlo. Sobre el arte, siempre me ha gustado mucho el maquillaje… pero para otros, para mí siempre hago lo básico. Solíamos hacer cosplay, así que tengo bastantes habilidades de maquillaje y pelucas, lo que me ayudó bastante.

Your faceups are amazing! How did you started offering face-ups commissions? Do you work with commission slots? Kyohei: At the start of our facebook page, I never thought to work with it, as I said, but our friends started to ask us to customize their dolls too, so I thought "why not?", then I studied other people's page so I can start to accept commissions too. I started charging a symbolic price, a really really lower price, till I understand how I can do the work very well. Today, I accept commissions in our facebook or Instagram pages (@puppettalesdolls), for now, our 2021 wait list is full, as we're working with our adorable friend from @Clockworkfaery doing this sweeties stock faceups, but we're really exciting for the next year, we'll bring a lot of news!

¡Tus maquillajes son increíbles! ¿Cómo comenzaste a ofrecer comisiones? ¿Trabajas por encargo o con slots? Kyohei: Al principio de nuestra página de Facebook, nunca pensé trabajar con eso, como dije, pero nuestros amigos empezar a pedir que maquille sus muñecas y yo dije “por qué no?”. Así que estudié a otras páginas para poder aceptar encargos. Empecé solicitando un precio simbólico, bastante bajo, hasta que aprendí a hacer el trabajo muy bien. Ahora acepto los encargos por las páginas de Facebook o Instagram. Por ahora, la lista para 2021 está llena, ya que estamos trabajando con nuestra amiga ClockworkFaery haciendo los maquillajes de “stock”, pero estamos muy entusiasmadas por este año, que vamos a traer otras noticias!

What can you tell us about the Blythes? Kyohei: Yes, Blythes are one of my favorite kind of doll today, different from the BJD, Blythes can be easily modified to another face, in BJD we can only put some makeup, maybe a little mod, but it doesn't make a lot of difference at the end, for blythes you can trade anything, you can make them as you wish, you can sculpt face, carving month and nose, you can trade eyes, add ears, trade bodies, it's a whole new world to work with. Our love is the sculpts, I love to create a new doll from zero. Unfortunately by now we're not accepting blythe commissions anymore, we'll give a little break, so we'll only sell the dolls ready, but if you like one of our dolls you can buy one of them in our Brazilian or Etsy Store.

¿Qué nos pueden contar sobre las Blythes? Kyohei: Sí, las Blythes son mi tipo de muñeca favorita actualmente. A diferencia de las BJDs, se las puede modificar fácilmente para tener otra cara. En las BJDs es sólo maquillaje, un poco de modificaciones, pero al final no hace muchos cambios. Pero en las Blythes podes cambiar todo, hacer lo que quieras, modelarles la cara, cambiar los ojos, agregar orejas, cambiar los cuerpos, es un mundo nuevo para explorar. Nuestro amor es el modelado, y me encanta crear muñecas desde cero. Por ahora no estamos aceptando Blythes y le estamos dando un espacio, así que sólo vamos a vender las muñecas que están listas. Pero si ves una que te gusta la puedes comprar en nuestra tienda Brasilera o en Etsy.

Do you have a workplace to share with us? How do you organize to do face-ups? Kyohei: We're moving from our house now, so we unfortunately don't have a workplace to share with you all, but soon we'll have! About organization, we follow our commission list, we work with Trello, an application to organize people, photos and messages, along with the work already completed. To start a new job I arrange my table, put my pencils and brushes organized and leave things that I use most on the table available, for example, as I make more brown eyebrows than others, the brown paint and brush are always next to me. I always make one doll at a time, I don't work with several dolls at the same time, I prefer to always do the work on one doll and until I finish this one I don't like to get another one, I like to give myself 100% to one job at a time.

¿Tienen un espacio de trabajo para compartir con nosotros? ¿Cómo se organizan para hacer los maquillajes? Kyohei: Ahora nos estamos mudando, así que desafortunadamente no tenemos un espacio organizado para mostrarles, pero pronto! Sobre la organización, tenemos una lista de encargos y trabajamos con Trello, una aplicación para organizar fotos, mensajes y gente, junto con el trabajo ya completado. Antes de empezar un nuevo trabajo organizo mi mesa, con los lápices, pinceles y las cosas que uso a mano. Por ejemplo, si voy a hacer más cejas marrones, dejo esas paletas más cerca que las otras. Siempre hago de a una muñeca por vez, no trabajo en varias al mismo tiempo, porque prefiero centrarme en una y terminarla, poniendo el 100% de mí en cada trabajo.

You also offer wigs! What type of materials do you use? Do you offer commissions? Kaya: For now, we are working with quality yarn and Mohair (Angora and tibetan), in the future we hope we can make synthetic wigs, we've been studying about how to do but it's a process who takes time to learn how to do it perfectly, and we don't sell if we don't consider it's perfect to a customer. We also work with a lot of head sizes, to Monster High to more than 5 sizes of BJD heads, Blythe, Middie, OB11, Pullip and other.

¡También ofrecen pelucas! ¿Qué tipo de materiales usan? ¿Ofrecen encargos? Kaya: Por ahora estamos trabajando con lana de calidad y mohair (Angora y Tibetana). En el futuro esperamos que podamos hacer pelucas sintéticas, ya que hemos estado estudiando cómo hacerlas, pero es todo un proceso y lleva tiempo aprender. Y no las vendemos si no creemos que es perfecta para un cliente. Hemos trabajado con muchas cabezas, desde Monster High hasta 5 tamaños de BJDs, Blythes, Middie, OB11, Pullip y otras.

Do you have a personal favorite faceup or wig? Why is it your favourite? Is there a story behind it? Kyohei: It depends on the doll, because I work with a lot of dolls, but talking about Blythes, my favorite in this moment is Li-Yu, I like her because she's more adult, and I have a character who is similar to her. It's a kind of work I don't do always, people usually like more baby dolls than the adult ones. I like to make things with more freedom, I think when I'm not doing a commission, I work better. Kaya: About the wigs, my favorite is the braided one, it's the most special wig I ever worked, and it was a commission of a lovely customer who believed in myself to do. I cried a lot in the process, it takes almost a week to be done as this wig have 4m of braided hair. But I love her.

¿Tienen algún maquillaje favorito o una peluca? ¿Por qué es su favorito? ¿Tiene alguna historia? Kyohei: Depende de la muñeca. Porque trabajo con muchas, pero respecto a las Blythes, mi favorita es Li’Yu, y me gusta porque es más adulta y tengo un carácter similar al de ella. Es un tipo de trabajo que no hago a menudo, porque a la gente le gusta más las muñecas más infantiles que las adultas. Me gusta hacer cosas con más libertad, creo que cuando no hago un encargo trabajo mejor. Kaya: sobre las pelucas, mi favorita es la de trenzas, porque es la más especial que he trabajado, y fue una comisión para un cliente adorable que creía que podía hacerlo. Lloré mucho en el proceso, me llevó mucho hacerlo porque tiene casi 4 metros de pelo trenzado. Pero la adoro.

And what about your own personal doll collection? Do you have a favorite size or brand? Kyohei: My favorites are the 1/3 BJD dolls, because I like the beauty of them, but for mobility I like more the 1/4 dolls, I think is easier to deal with then 1/3 dolls. I think the LoongSoul and la Légende de Temps dolls are wonderful, they're my favorite brand of dolls. I only have boy dolls, I like them the most, and the most part of my collection are made of delicated boys, I mean, boys who wear lingerie, dresses, and other (haha). Some of my dolls are based on stories I write with my wife as well, we liked to play some RPG when we can, and even if it's hard to believe, I don't have a single Blythe. I work more than I collect, so I prefer to do a doll to a customer than do it for myself, what's a little sad, but true. Kaya: My favorite are also the 1/3 boys, but I have girls too, I have more dolls than she have, even I don't know how lol, I also collect other sizes of dolls, like 1/4, 1/6, OB11, Blythes, Pullips, oh god I have a lot of dolls, I need to stop myself. My favorite brands are Clockwork Faery, Freedom Teller, MyouDoll and LoongSoul as well.

¿Qué nos pueden contra de su colección personal? ¿Tienen un tamaño o marca favorito? Kyohei: Mis favoritos son tamaño 1/3, porque me gusta su belleza, pero por la movilidad me gustan más los 1/4, aunque creo que es más fácil trabajar con los grandes. Creo que los LoongSoul y las muñecas de Légende de Temps son maravillosas, y son mi marca favorita. Sólo tengo muñecos hombre porque me gustan más, y la mayoría de mi colección son chicos delicados. Que usan lencería, vestidos y otras cosas. Algunas de mis muñecas están basados en historias que escribo con mi esposa, ya que nos gusta jugar a RPGs cuando podemos. Y si es difícil creerlo, no tengo ninguna Blythe. Trabajo más de lo que colecto, así que prefiero hacer una muñeca para un cliente que para mí, lo que es un poco triste pero verdad. Kaya: mi favorito también son los chicos 1/3, pero también tengo chicas. Tengo más muñecas que ella y no sé cómo. También tengo otros tamaños como 1/4, 1/6, OB11, Blythes, Pullips oh por favor tengo demasiadas, tengo que detenerme. Mis marcas favoritas son ClockworkFaery, FreedomTeller, MyouDoll y LoongSoul.
