Interview with Orlydolls

Hello everyone! New month is here, and we have another interview--please welcome Svetlana from Orlydolls. She makes stunning clothes for artists BJDs, with a special focus in lingerie. As always, you can read this in English and Spanish, and all photos are used with permision. Let's read!

Hello!! Thank you so much for accepting the interview! Would you introduce yourself to the readers? Hello, my name is Svetlana Mishina. But I am better known as Orlydoll. I am engaged in the creation of clothes for designer dolls BJD. These are casual clothes, underwear, shoes, accessories and wigs. In addition, I constantly practice my skills in drawing make- up for dolls.

¡Hola! ¡Gracias por aceptar la entrevista! ¿Te presentarías a los lectores? Hola, soy Svetlana Mishina. Pero me conocen más como Orlydoll. Yo creo ropa para BJDs de artista. Estas son ropas casuales, ropa interior, zapatos, accesorios y pelucas. Además, constantemente practico mis habilidades para hacer maquillaje para las muñecas.

How did you find out about BJDs? Did you collected dolls before? At first, I was very interested in sewing textile dolls. They were Korean tryapiens. I started an Instagram and there I first found the BJDs. Unfortunately, few people know about this hobby. Including I did not know anything. But I started subscribing to the masters and dreaming that I would have such a doll. It took 4 years and I decided to buy.

¿Cómo encontraste las BJDs? ¿Coleccionabas muñecas antes? Al principio, estaba muy interesada en coser muñecas textiles. Eran tryapiens Koreanas. Comencé un Instagram y desde ahí vi las BJDs. Desafortunadamente, pocas personas que conocía sabían de este hobby. Yo no sabía nada. Pero empecé a seguir a los maestros, esperando algún día tener una. Me llevó cuatro años hasta que al fin pude comprar una.

How and why did you decided to start sewing and selling outfits? I just wanted to enjoy playing and sewing. But sewing for people and for dolls are very different things. I looked for myself, tried different types of clothes. At some point, I started sewing lingerie and posting my processes on Instagram. People asked questions about the purchase, so I started to work on order. Then I started to have new dolls, and gradually my hobby turned into work.

¿Cómo y cuándo decidiste empezar a coser y vender ropa? Simplemente quería disfrutar y coser. Pero coser para personas y para muñecas es algo muy diferente. Busqué por mi cuenta distintos tipos de ropa. Al principio, empecé a hacer lingerie y mostrar mis procesos en Instagram. La gente preguntó para comprar, así que empecé a trabajar por encargo. Luego comencé a tener más muñecas y mi hobby se convirtió en trabajo.

You sell casual clothing, but you also have stunningly detailed lingerie! What moved your towards this style? I really love the rococo and baroque styles. I planned to devote myself to just this kind of sewing. The first intricate dress was in this style. But demand creates supply. 90% of my buyers want exactly underwear. Therefore, now I devote all my time to this type of clothing.

Vendes ropa casual, pero también tienes ropa interior muy detallada. ¿Qué te llevó hacia este estilo? Realmente me encanta el estilo rococo y barroco. Planeé dedicarme a este tipo de costura. El primer vestido complicado era de este estilo. Pero la demanda dirige todo. El 90% de mis compradores quieren ropa interior. Así que ahora dedico casi todo mi tiempo a este tipo de ropa.

Which are your favorite materials to work with? Do you have any favorite outfit? I have no favorite types of fabric. The main criterion for my choice is the thickness of the fabric. I try to make my things look proportional on the dolls. Agree, thick fabrics are not for dolls. Therefore, I choose very thin and delicate materials. Silk, chiffon, organza, satin are my friends.

¿Cuáles son tus materiales favoritos para trabajar? ¿Tienes algún conjunto que sea tu favorito? No tengo tipos de tela favoritas. El principal criterio es el grosor de la tela. Trato de hacer que las cosas sean proporcionales a las muñecas. Estoy de acuerdo con que las telas gruesas no son para muñecas. Así que busco cosas finas y delicadas. Como seda, chifón, organza, satén. Esos son mis amigos.

How is your sale structure? Do you sell stock, or do you work by pre-order? Do you offer commissions? I usually sew for people to order. We discuss the details and I get to work. It so happens that a decent queue gathers. Then I stop accepting applications and try to do everything in turn. Then I take a break from orders and sew what I myself want. These are the things I display in the shop on Etsy. As for the sizes. I only wear those dolls that live with me. Because you need frequent fitting to make your clothes look perfect. I can repeat any of my outfits for any doll.

¿Cómo te organizas para vender? ¿Tienes stock o trabajas con encargos? ¿Ofreces comisiones? Usualmente coso para la gente que hace encargos. Discutimos los detalles y me pongo a trabajar. Sucede que muchas veces se arma una cola. Entonces tengo que dejar de aceptar encargos y completo todos los turnos. Luego me tomo un tiempo para coser lo que quiero. Esas son las cosas que tengo en Etsy. Con respecto a los tamaños, solo coso para las muñecas que tengo conmigo. Eso es porque a menudo necesito probar todo para que se vea perfecto. Y puedo repetir la ropa para cualquier muñeca.

Do you have any future plans for your dolls? Are you considering expanding to other doll sizes? At the moment, I will not fundamentally change anything. But most likely I will reduce the amount of work to order. I am going to open my own website shop and am already negotiating with a web designer. I love the fashion format. I love this designer doll. But they take a lot of my time, which I would like to spend with my family. Therefore, I do not plan to buy new girls in the near future.

¿Tienes planes futuros para tus muñecas? ¿Estas considerando expandirte a otros tamaños? Por el momento, no voy a cambiar fundamentalmente nada. Mayormente, voy a reducir la cantidad de trabajo a pedido. Voy a abrir mi propio sitio y estoy negociando con un desarrollador. Me encanta el formado de la ropa y las muñecas de artistas. Pero llevan mucho tiempo, que me gustaría pasar con mi familia. Por lo tanto, no estoy pensando comprar nada nuevo en el futuro.
