Interview with Follow the Wind

Hello everyone! These would be the last interview of 2021, and I'm happy to present you mdamefollow, also known as Follow the Wind, a France-based faceup artist who does terrific works! As always, all the images here are used with permission, and the interview is translated to both English and Spanish. Enjoy!

Hello and thank you for doing the interview! Would you introduce yourself to our readers? Hello, thank you very much for interviewing me! My name is Eleonore, I go for Follow-the-Wind online, and I create mostly custom face-up for dolls. I collect BJDs and Pullip (even if I seldomly show my Pullip, shame on me!) since 2006. I live in France, not very far from the German borders.

Mi nombre es Eleonore, me conocen como Follow-the-Wind online, y creo maquillajes personalizados para muñecas. Colecciono BJDs y Pullips (incluso si las muestre muy poco) desde 2006. Vivo en Francia, no muy lejos de la frontera con Alemania.

Let’s start with the basics. How did you discover BJDs? Do you have an artistic background? Oh my! I discovered both Pullip and BJDs in my first year of graduate school. If I remember well, I found Pullip at a manga store in the city where I was studying, and BJDs while I was looking for information on various dolls on the web. At this time I was collecting Bleeding Edge Goth, Little Apple Dolls and so on. I was really impressed by the possibilities of customisation on both Pullip and BJDs, but was not enough confident in my painting skills to begin modifying my dolls. I was also afraid by their price. So I waited a year before buying my first Taeyang, and two more before ordering my first BJD. I also begin customisations on Little Apple Dolls before trying to do something on a BJD. It was the beginning of a long journey, haha! To say the truth, I didn't study art. I studied science and technology and worked some years in the nuclear industry. Nothing to do with art and dolls! But as far as I could remember, I always had artistic hobbies. I used to draw and paint years before making my first doll's tattoo.

Comencemos con lo básico. ¿Cómo conociste a las BJDs? ¿Tienes educación artística? Oh! Descurbí las Pullips y las BJDs en mi primer año de la escuela de posgrado. Si recuerdo bien, encontré las Pullips en una tienda de manga en la ciudad donde estudiaba, y las BJDs cuando estaba buscando información sobre otras muñecas en internet. En ese momento, coleccionaba Bleeding Edge Goth, Little Apple Dolls, y demás. Me impresionó mucho la posibilidad de personalizar las Pullips y las BJDs, pero no me tenía suficiente confianza como para empezar a modificar mis muñecas. Me daba miedo el precio. Así que esperé un año antes de comprar mi primer Taeyang, y dos más hasta encargar mi primera BJD. Comencé las personalizaciones en Little Apple Dolls antes de hacer algo en las BJDs. ¡Era el inicio de un largo camino! Para decir la verdad, no estudié arte. Estudié ciencia y tecnología y trabajé un par de años en la industria nuclear. ¡Nada que ver con muñecas y arte! Pero por lo que recuerdo, siempre tuve hobbies artísticos. Me encantaba pintar y dibujar incluso antes de hacer el primer tatuaje de muñeca.

Your face-ups have so much texture! How did you start offering face-ups commissions? Do you work with commission slots? Dolls and their customisations were my hobby during all the years I worked in the nuclear industry. It was kind of an escape from my very demanding job. People begin to ask me if I could do commissions on their dolls, and I though “why not?” so I started offering face-ups commissions. The very first commissions I did are from 2009 or 2010, for friends. I took a break from 2013 to 2016 because I had no longer the time for commissions in addition of my job. During this break, I completely changed my style of face-ups : I discovered textured face-ups! It was a revelation. From this moment I only did textured face-ups and had far more fun than before. In 2019 I decided to change my career. I started a company, Encres Folles (Crazy Inks in french) for offering face-ups commission as full-time job. Now I work with commission slots : I open them on my Instagram account, mdamefollow, and on facebook (Encres Folles). For face-ups I took 10 slots at the same time. I work with a quite precise form that I send to customers. They can fill it by hand or by computer, leave blank area and/or send references, it's like they wish! I send WIP pictures of each important step for validation before sealing. That way we can discuss and possibly correct things before I move to next step. I annouce slots opening on Facebook and Instagram at least a week before the opening.

¡Tus maquillajes realmente tienen tanta textura! ¿Cómo empezaste a ofrecer comisiones de maquillaje? ¿Trabajas por encargo? Las muñecas y su personalización fueron mi hobby durante todos los años que trabajé en la industria nuclear. Era un tipo de escape de mi trabajo demandante. La gente me empezó a preguntar si hacía comisiones para pintar sus muñecas y pensé “por qué no?”, así que empecé con maquillajes. Los primeros que hice fueron en 2009 o 2010 para amigos. Tomé un descanso de 2013 a 2016 porque no tenía tiempo para encargos junto con mi trabajo. En ese tiempo, cambié completamente mi estilo. Descubrí los maquillajes con textura, y fue una revelación. Desde ese momento sólo hice maquillajes con textura y me divertí mucho más que antes. En 2019 decidí cambiar de carrera. Empecé mi compañía Encres Folles (en Francés significa Tinta Loca) para ofrecer maquillajes de muñeca a tiempo completo. Ahora trabajo por encargo: abro todo en mi cuenta de Instagram y en Facebook. Para los maquillajes, tomo 10 lugares al mismo tiempo. Trabajo con una forma muy precisa que le mando a los clientes. La llenan en computadora o a mano, dejando un espacio o enviando referencias. Les envío fotos del progreso de cada parte importante para validación antes de sellar. De esa forma podemos discutir y posiblemente corregir cosas antes de moverme al siguiente paso. Anuncio los espacios en Facebook e Instagram una semana antes de abrirlos.

You also do tattoos! What are your favourite works on this? How did you start? For the story, I choose the name of Encres Folles because I use acrylic inks (encres) and because people used to call me crazy (folle) for all the details I like to paint in tattoos, hehe. I think people – at least the french community - know me for my tattoos first and for my face-ups only after. My first BJD was a Doll In Mind Galahad. I wanted to paint something on him but was afraid of unstringing him. One day his wrist came off and so did his arm. I jumped on the opportunity to paint my very first tattoo ! It was in 2008. In fact I enjoyed painting tattoos more than face-ups for years (it was true before I begin to play with texture). At the begining I painted tattoos on nearly every of my dolls . Making tattoos commissions was a little scary to me, because I I thought it would be difficult to reach the client's expectations. My approach to personnal tattoos and commission tattoos is very different. For personnal tattoos, it's a game between what will fit the doll's character, what I want to try and what new technic and style I can learn . I often take inspirations from other artists (painters like tattoists) because I want to learn something. For commissions, I do not allow myself to work the same. The commissions must comes from me, or at least more from me (I always work with references). So I do multiple sketches, ask a lot of questions to the customer, and try to do something as close to their vision than possible. Maybe that's why it tooks me so much time ! Naming my favorite tattoo works is going to be hard . Some of the oldest are golden, and some of the newest too. From the oldest, I think a commission I did in 2010.. And from the newest... it's hard to say, because all the seldom tattoos I paint have their own qualities.

¡También haces tatuajes! ¿Cuáles son tu trabajos favoritos en esto? ¿Cómo empezaste? Para la historia, elegí el nombre Encres Folles porque uso tinta acrílica (encres) y porque la gente suele decirme loca (folle) por todos los detalles que me gusta ponerle a los tatuajes. Creo que la gente, al menos en la comunidad francesa, me conoce primero por los tatuajes y luego por los maquillajes. Mi primera BJD fue una Doll in Mind Galahad. Quería pintar algo en él pero tenía mucho miedo de destensarlo. Un día la muñeca se le soltó junto con el brazo, y salté a la oportunidad de pintar mi primer tatuaje! Era 2008. De hecho, disfruté mucho más de pintar tatuajes más que maquillajes por años (era cierto antes de empezar a pintar con textura). Al principio, tatuaba a casi todas mis muñecas. Las comisiones de tatuajes me daban miedo, porque creía que iba a ser difícil alcanzar las expectativas del cliente. Mi forma de trabajar con los tatuajes personales y las comisiones es diferente. Para los personales, es un juego para ver qué le queda bien, qué quiero intentar con una técnica nueva o qué estilo puede aprender. A menudo me inspiro en otros artistas (pintores o tatuadores) porque quiero aprender algo. Para las comisiones no me permito hacer lo mismo. Las comisiones tienen que salir de mí (siempre trabajo con referencias) así que hago muchos bosquejos, le pregunto mucho al cliente, e intento hacer algo cercano a su visión. ¡Quizás por eso me lleva mucho tiempo! Nombrar un favorito es difícil. Algunos de los viejos son de oro, y algunos de los nuevos también. El más viejo es una comisión de 2010. Y de los nuevos es difícil decir porque todos los tatuajes que pinto tienen sus características.

Do you have a workplace to share with us? How do you organize to do face-ups? My workshop is the right size. Not too little, I can stock all my materials (for face-ups, modelling, wigs and so on), all the commissions and packages sent by customers, all the boxes of my personnal collection. And not too big or I'll buy even more materials and dolls. I like to have everything at hand when I work, so I work on a quite small worktable with all what I need on it. Under windows (north oriented) I have a second (and bigger) worktable, but it's usually drowned in clutter! Moreover I'm used to work under a white lamp light. It allows me to work even at night or in short winter days. I have a hygrometer and a thermometer in my workshop to check both humidity and temperature before using sealant. I also use a lot an air blower on the heads for getting ride of dust and other impurity that may get trap under the selant. Regarding face-ups, I usually make them in 4-6 steps. I begin with the base (skin effect, some light blushing), I continue with details (veins, moles, wrinkles...) and more blushing, and finish with painting eyebrows and eyelashes. It's not set in stone, so I may paint veins at first step and eyelashes before eyebrows, but it how I process most of the time. At each step I took pictures and send them to the customer for approval.

¿Tienes un espacio de trabajo para compartir con nosotros? ¿Cómo te organizas con los maquillajes? Mi espacio de trabajo es el tamaño ideal. No demasiado chico, puedo poner todos mis materiales (para maquillajes, modelado, pelucas y demás). Todos los paquetes enviados por clientes, las cajas de mi colección personal. Y no es demasiado grande, o voy a comprar más materiales y muñecas. Me gusta tener todo a mano cuando trabajo, así que trabajo en una tabla pequeña con todo lo que necesito. Debajo de una ventana (orientada al norte) tengo una segunda mesa más grande, pero está llena de cosas. Además, me acostumbré a trabajar bajo una lámpara blanca. Me permite trabajar incluso de noche o en los días cortos del invierno. Tengo un hidrómetro y un termómetro para revisar la temperatura y humedad antes de usar el sellador. También uso mucho un secador para las cabezas para evitar el polvo y otras impurezas que pueden atraparse bajo el sellador. Respecto de los maquillajes, usualmente los hago en 4-6 pasos. Empiezo con la base (efectos en la piel, rubor), luego continúo con los detalles (venas, lunares, arrugas), y luego más blushing y termino pintando las cejas y las pestañas. No está fijado en la piedra, pero es cómo trabajo la mayoría del tiempo. En cada paso, saco fotos y se las mando al cliente para que lo aprueben.

You also do masks, and participated on the Doll Festiv at Home. What can you share about this? I have a soft spot for dolls masks since 2011, even if I make seldom of them (because there is not enough hours in one day, haha). I made something like 10-12 OOAK masks for myself, in wood clay, in the past 10 years. Then a friend of mine (Pandalilou from Tendres Chimeres) asked me multiple times to make a prototype for resin masks. She works with resin since at least 15 years, and finally convinced me to go for it. I prepared four prototypes (two Hannya and two kitsune, SD and MSD) and she helped me making the molds and did all the resin casts. I didn't participate to the first edition of Doll festiv'at home, last year, because I wasn't at home, but I participated to the second edition this year. It was very fun, even if a little tiring to be behind my screen all the day (from 9h to 19h). BTW there will be a Christmas edition on sunday the 12th december! Don't miss it if you want to see (and maybe bought) nice creations from declared artists.

También haces máscaras y has participado del Doll Festiv at Home. ¿Qué nos puedes contar de esto? Tengo un punto débil para máscaras de muñecas desde 2011, incluso si las hago raramente (porque no hay suficientes horas en un día, haha!). Hice algo de 10’12 OOAK máscaras para mí, en masilla de madera, en los últimos 10 años. Luego una amiga mía (Pandalilou de Tendres Chimeres) me pidió muchas veces que le hiciera un prototipo para máscaras de resina. Ella trabaja con resina desde hace al menos 15 años, y finalmente me convenció que lo haga. Preparé cuatro prototipos (dos Hannya y dos kitsune, SD y MSD) y ella me ayudó a hacer los moldes y los casteó. No participé en la primera edición del Doll Festiv at Home, el año pasado, porque no estaba en mi casa. Pero participé en la segunda edición este año. Fue muy divertido, incluso si cansador estar detrás de la pantalla todo el día (de 9am a 7pm). Pero va a haber una edición de Navidad el Domingo 12 de diciembre. No se lo pierdan si quieren ver (y quizás comprar) cosas lindas de los artistas declarados.

Do you have a personal favourite among your face-ups? And a most popular face-up? My personal favourite among my face-ups? It's a hard question! Maybe one of my skull face-ups. Or maybe all my skull face-ups. I have a very soft spot for skulls. XD I also tend to prefer the last face-up I did... so it's hard to say. My most popular face-up is a chinese-inspired beauty, on a Black Cherry Moon. I must say the customer had a very nice project for this girl. I love when customers have original projects, or when they take me out of my comfort zone.

¿Tienes un maquillaje que te guste personalmente? ¿Y uno muy popular? ¿Un favorito propio entre mis maquillajes? ¡Es una pregunta difícil! Seguro que uno de los calavera. O quizás todos los calaveras. Tengo una debilidad por las calaveras. También tiendo a preferir el último que haya hecho, así que es difícil de decir. Mi maquillaje más popular es uno inspirado en belleza china, en una Black Cherry Moon. Debo decir que el cliente tenía un proyecto muy lindo para esta chica. Me encanta cuando los clientes tienen proyectos originales o que me sacan de la zona de comfort.
