Interview with MerviaArt Dolls

Hello everyone, and welcome to another interview! This time, let me introduce you to Merve, the artist behind MerviaArt Dolls, hailing from Poland. As always, all images here were used with permission, and you can read this in both English and Spanish. So without further ado, let's start!

Hello! Thank you for doing this interview! Will you introduce yourself to the readers?
Hello! Thanks for having me here! I’m Merve, the artist of MerviaArt Dolls, joining you from Poland.
¡Hola! ¡Muchas gracias por aceptar la entrevista! ¿Te introducirías a los lectores?
¡Hola!

How did you find out about BJDs and the doll hobby?
Since I know myself I have always been an artistic person. I love all types of crafts and it makes me so happy to create art. Since I love trying different types of crafts, in 2017 I decided to learn how to make crochet dolls which made me realize how much I enjoy customizing dolls. After making a few of them it was time for me to discover more of the customizing world so I searched the term ’doll customizing’ and found so many lovely doll repaint videos on YouTube. Few of the artists I watched were collecting ball jointed dolls so that is how I found out about BJDs! in 2018 I attended Dolly Day as a visitor and I immediately fell in love with them and decided to start collecting.

And then, what pushed you to start MerviaArt Dolls? What aesthetic do you pursue?
Since that year I tried so many new things I decided to take an art doll making course and make my first ribbon jointed art doll with Trina Art. And she gratefully agreed to my question ‘Can I make my doll with a third eye?’ and that is how I started sculpting Mela. She was a ribbon jointed art doll at first. But her story and character were there from day one.
Luego, ¿qué te empujó a comenzar MerviaArtDolls?

A characteristic of your dolls is their third eye! What are your artist goals with that?
In 2019 I started reading a lot about witchcraft, dive into tarot/oracle readings and find myself a new spiritual path. Also, I wanted to give a try to do full Inktober that year and all my sketches came out as three eyed girls. Quite often I express myself with portraits and I realized I relate with this imagery so well. The third eye represents so many things for me (You can read Mela’s story on my website) but I can say the biggest meaning for me is having a new eye to see the world and being different from others. I want everyone who feels like a misfit here to be confident with themselves and love themselves for who they are with Mela.

What is your workflow? Do you do everything by yourself?
I do everything by myself except casting my dolls. As I mentioned before, Mela was hand sculpted ribbon jointed art doll at the beginning. When I decided to turn her into BJD I wanted to combine traditional sculpting with 3D sculpting. To get accurate facial features I 3D scan Mela’s face and then fix the 3D model. Her body was entirely created digitally. And by doing everything myself I mean with the help of my husband who is a 3D modeler. He helped a lot by teaching me how to properly prepare a model for printing and also for the actual 3D printing itself. Since I resin printed my master model to send to my caster it was essential to learn all these details. Other than that I do everything by myself such as face-ups, wigs, outfits. For me the most enjoyable part of the doll hobby is getting engaged in many different types of crafting!

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
In 2020 I had plans to show up with Mela on Dolly Day in Spain but due to the pandemic it could not happen. I really hope this September we can make it happen since I am looking forward to be there with my creations. For 2022 I added another event to join which is Wonderland of Play which will take place in Belgium. I am really excited for both events for this year and I really hope I can meet all the lovely collectors and artists there and introduce Mela to more people! I will do my best to have some of my pet BJD ready for the event and maybe show a prototype of Mona too. Oh I almost forgot to say, there is another giveaway in the making! Right now I am recovering from surgery but as soon as I am back to my regular working schedule I will complete her and start the giveaway to celebrate reaching 4k supporters on my instagram account. So make sure to follow it, turn on notifications for the posts and stories so you will not miss the announcement. Spoiler: The giveaway Mela will be 3D resin printed again but in a special size this time…Let’s say a lot cuter and smaller size.
