Interview with Zellstudio

Hello everyone! Welcome to another interview, and this time please welcome Viktoria, from Zellstudio, who makes increidble outfits for dolls! As always, all images are being used with permission, and you can read the interview in both English and Spanish. So without further ado, let's begin!

Hello! Will you introduce yourself to the readers?
Hi, I’m Viktoria, and my nickname Zellstudio is very old, some friends even call me Zell. I sew mostly outfits for 1:4 scale size art dolls – lingerie and gowns. Dolls help me to create mini art pieces and I like to make them beautiful.
¡Hola!

How did you find out about BJDs and the doll hobby?
My way to dolls started when I was a kid. Of course, it was Barbie doll, mine had only one short dress. As I needed princess dresses for my games, I had to sew them by myself. When I started my first job as a journalist, I felt a little stressed and wanted to find a hobby to relax, so I returned to doll sewing again. Later I have discovered Tonner dolls and made friends with local artist, KarinaKo, who makes amazing Tonner repaints and BJD faceups. When I saw BJDs for the first time at her house I was overwhelmed, especially when I saw all those outfits. I’m a big fan of Asian outfits and I’m pretty sure real magicians sew them. My first BJDs were CastleAnne Marie, Lillycat Ellana and Ninon, MyDolling Heeah, Rainydoll E-Una and some others. Unfortunately, I haven’t kept them all, but now I want to buy SD-sized dolls again as I want to try to sew outfits for big dolls.

And from there, what inspired you to begin sewing?
Let me make a little diversion. I was born in one of the most beautiful places in the world IMHO, Subcarpathian Ruthenia, and studied at local esthetic education school. One day our class was taken to a local history museum and I still remember that magic feeling! I felt in love with all that multicolored beautiful costumes and started to learn costume history from the whole world. That’s why I wanted to become a seamstress, but became a journalist and marketing manager instead. I have worked in fashion retail and have seen a lot of amazing fashion pieces and learned a lot. So when I went on maternity leave, I started to sew a lot for dolls. Also I started some collaboration with different doll artists and tried different styles of doll outfits, from historical costumes to lingerie. My lucky chance was the collaboration with artist Anna Dobryakova (Tender Creation). She helped me to understand my style, gave me the most interesting ideas and helped me to get to the new level of quality. Sometimes seeing her sketches I felt a little scared as I had no idea how to sew it. But I never give up! Numerous attempts and experiments helped me to learn or even invent by myself some amazing doll sewing techniques.

You have lingerie and sexy, burlesque outfits! What inspired you to create this?
I’m big fan of laces. When I travel, I always want to buy more and more beautiful laces. Thank God, my storage boxes have limit! It’s the sort of my obsession. I like that old school beauty – laces, silk, beads –and dolls are perfect models for this beautiful, but absolutely impractical clothes. I sew only for dolls that I own or have mannequins. Unfortunately, it’s absolutely impossible to sew lingerie for small art dolls using only measurements. I can make mannequins with the help of 3D scanner, but at the same time I want to thank to doll authors who provide mannequins, it really helps a lot!
Tienes lingerie, y trajes burlescos.

However you also have dresses, many of which have intricate bead-work! What can you share about this?
My second obsession is collecting beads and sequins. And sometimes I just open my boxes, look at all that shiny little packets and find new color mixes for my outfits. It’s my sort of magic! And of course, my dear customers usually order something sophisticated and I really like their challenges .

Do you work with commissions or stock?
I try to alternate commissions with small ready collections. I really like to take orders! As sometimes customers come with absolutely brilliant ideas. But of course taking free time to work on my own ideas is absolutely necessary for me as an artist. Sometimes outfits just need to be sewn otherwise they don’t let me sew orders!

You also offer some stunning heels! How is the process to design them and build them? Which sizes do you have available?
I have always dreamed to present complete outfits with accessories and heels, and 3D modelling helped me a lot. I only make sketches, and 3D modellers help me with creating soles. It’s the hardest part as I always have tons of comments. 3D printing and casting takes a lot of time as I usually use contractors. So when it comes to final assembly, a lot of time can pass. I wish I had more time for making heels as I have a lot of interesting ideas. I definitely need a time machine! As every crafting person, I guess.

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
First of all I like to say “Thank you so much!” to all my customers and buyers. Thanks for patience, for interesting ideas, for trusting! I’m rather slow person as I’m very busy at my primary work, so my waiting line is long. But I really hope my outfits bring beauty and joy to this world. I feel absolutely lucky creating them and I hope you feel my good vibes. Now I’m working on big light-toned collection in boho style for different kind of dolls and hope to present in in the nearest future, and a very interested animal-themed collection for Popovy dolls is in progress as well! Stay tuned!

    1. Indeed!! She makes stunning clothes, those lace roses are amazing! So, the sleeping one is a BardoSearch Anitya, and the left one (brunette, blue eyes) I *believe* it is an Eslynsdolls Mary.
