Hello all! Please welcome Annaku from Vesnushkahandmade! Se is a very versatile artist, who makes amazing faceups, and very, very unique special parts that combine animals and fruits! As always, the interview is in both English and Spanish, and all photos are used with permission. Please, enjoy!

Hello and thank you for doing the interview! Would you introduce yourself to our readers?
Hello, Musume! Thank you so much for the interest to my creative workshop! I'm honoured to be interviewed by you! My name is Anna aka Annaku. I was born in 1984 and I live in Moscow, the capital of Russia and a very old but modern and beautiful city. Apart from dolls and painting, I like travelling, cross stitching, hiking, cats, butterflies and hummingbirds. Under the name of Annaku I paint faceups and you may find me by it at DenofAngels. I also create fantasy animal parts, shoes and jewellery made of backed polymer clay. This is also a trademark for knitted and sewn clothes that are made by my mom and BJD partner Mila. My Instagram (@Vesnushkahandmade), it was "born" together with an eponymous Etsy shop in 2015. Many BJD hobbyists may have known me from that 5 stars shop. Unfortunately, since March 2022 Paypal was blocked for Russian users and Etsy put all Russian shops on hold. Currently we make international sales posts right at Instagram.

Hola Musume! Muchas gracias por el interés en mi trabajo creativo, es un honor que me entrevistes. Mi nombre es Anna o Annaku. Nací en 1984 y vivo en Moscú, la capital de Rusia y una ciudad vieja pero moderna. Aparte de las muñecas y de las pinturas, me justa viajar, coser, caminar, los gatos, las mariposas y algunas aves. Bajo el nombre Annaku pinto maquillajes, y me pueden encontrar en Den of Angels. También creo partes de fantasía, zapatos, y joyas hechas de masilla de polímero. Esto también es una marca para ropas hechas por mi madre, Mila. Mi cuenta de Instagram (@Vesnushkahandmade), nació junto con una tienda de Etsy del mismo nombre en 2015. Muchos hobbistas me pueden haber conocido por esa tienda de 5 estrellas. Desafortunadamente, desde Marzo del 2022, Paypal bloqueó usuarios de Paypal de Rusia y Etsy suspendió todas las tiendas. Actualmente, hago las ventas a través de Instagram.

Let’s start with the basics. How did you discover BJDs? Do you have an artistic background?
At middle school I received initial art education, but got a more "material" higher education - Bachelors degree in Linguistics. My current job in banking doesn't relate to art at all. However the passion for art and design accompany me through my whole life, I keep self-educate myself in Fine arts through different online and offline courses. I've been always interested in dolls and miniatures dollhouses. After the university I collected Monster High and fashion dolls. In 2010 I run into a local doll hobbyist website and learned about BJD. It was an absolutely new doll type for me and I fell in love with Fairyland dolls at once! Their motion capabilities, aesthetics and beautiful fairy-tale outfits are still capturing my heart!

Empecemos con lo básico. ¿Cómo conociste las BJDs? ¿Tienes una educación de arte?
En la escuela media recibí educación artística inicial, pero tuve una educación un poco más material—en Lenguas. Mi trabajo actual en el banco no se relaciona en nada con el arte. Sin embargo, la pasión por el arte y el diseño me ha acompañado toda la vida, y he continuado educandome en artes a través de diferentes cursos. Siempre he estado interesada en muñecas y casas de miniaturas. Luego de la Universidad, coleccionaba muñecas de Monster High. En 2010 conocí a un hobbista local y encontré las BJDs. Era un tipo completamente nuevo de muñeca, ¡y me enamoré de Fairyland rápidamente! La capacidad de movimiento, la estética, y los trajes de cuentos de hada, capturaron mi corazón.

How did you start with doing face-ups?
I remember myself with colour pencils and a sketchbook in hands since I was 5 yeas old, I used to spend most of my pastime drawing mermaids, fairies, princesses, beautiful dresses and fantasy creatures and furry animals. Once in 2011 - by that time I already had got a couple of full set BJDs with manufacture faceups and a real baby boy, I bought several Fairyland event heads I liked as second-hand. I just couldn't help finally trying to create a faceup by myself, to put to life characters I had in my mind. Exciting moments! My hobby friends liked the result and asked to paint their BJDs and then Monster high and so it went on and on and I started to offer faceup commissions... I still sometimes buy heads that very much appeal to me, get me hooked, paint and then sell at my social accounts.

¿Cómo comenzaste con los maquillajes?
Me recuerdo con lápices de colores y un cuadernillo en las manos desde que tenía cinco años, y pasaba la mayoría del tiempo dibujando direnas, hadas, princesas, vestidos y criaturas de fantasia. Una vez, en 2011, para cuando ya había comprado algunas BJDs con fullsets y un niño de verdad, me compré varias cabecitas Fairyland de evento de segunda mano. No podía aguantarme, y empecé a crear maquillajes para traer a la vida a esos personajes que tanto quería. ¡Qué momentos más excitantes! Mis amigas del hobby estuvieron encantadas con los resultado, y me pidieron que pintara sus muñecas, así que de a poco comencé a ofrecer comisiones de maquillaje. De todas formas, a veces compro cabecitas que me gustan, las pinto, y las vendo.

And from there, how did it evolve to commissions? Do you offer slots or waitlists?
I think it evolved really naturally: Russian BJD community is not very big, names of BJD masters with good reputation go by word of mouth. I think it's rather simple with faceups: firstly, people choose by faceup photos or videos, decide if they like my style and conditions, secondly, by the positive and friendly customer service and communication they get. I'm a very easy-going person. I can paint various styles: dollish, tender, natural, fantasy, vamp or kawaii. I can paint tattoos and floral adornments, but scars and zombies are not interesting to me. I like painting sunkissed girls, actually "vesnushka" means freckle in Russian. I can work on any doll head size from the biggest like Blythe to the tiniest like Gilliversmall dolls with only 1-2 cm head circumference. I can paint not only faces but also do body blushing for dolls up to 45 cm. I'm rather pedantic in finding out all the details the client would like to see as the result (I'm Virgo, hehe), however I also try to listen to my "intuition" for the sculpt and I would say that this mixture of the client's description, references, ideas and my feeling for the sculpt works in 99,9% perfectly! I paint quite quickly, a batch of 4 heads takes me about 2 weeks to finish, so clients are served based on first come first serve basis. I try not to limit my clients with slots, they can send as many heads as they wish. And mostly they don't have to wait at all, no waitlists! They can send out their dollies to me right away, 2-3 weeks and it's at my place. I work on commissions 5 days a week and clients can contact me on a new commission 24/7. I often get orders to paint a faceup of some famous movie star, computer game or cartoon hero. It's always so exciting to help the doll owner create a character of their dream! I always try to do my best to meet the client's expectations. And I'm very grateful that my clients trust me!

Y desde ahí ¿cómo pasaste a las comisiones? ¿Ofreces encargos o listas de espera?
Creo que evolucionó naturalmente. La comunidad de BJDs en Rusia no es tan grande, y los nombres de los maestros de BJDs pasan de boca en boca. Creo que es más simple con los maquillajes. Primero, la gente elige fotos o videos, deciden si les gusta mi estilo y mis condiciones. Segundo, por el servicio positivo que reciben. Soy una persona sencilla. Puedo pintar varios estilos. Más de muñeca, tierno, natural, fantasía, tipo vampiro o más adorable. Puedo pintar tatuajes o estilos florales, pero las cicatrices y zombies no son muy interesantes. Me gusta pintar muñecas tan, y de hecho "vesnushka" significa “pecas” en ruso. Puedo trabajar con cualquier tamaño, desde Blythes hasta pequeñitas de solo 1-2cm de circunferencia. Puedo pintar no sólo caras, pero también blush en el cuerpo para muñecas de hasta 45cm. Soy un poco pedante en tratar de conseguir todos los detalles que el cliente quisiera ver como resultado (soy de Virgo, qué esperan, jaja!), pero también intento escuchar mi “intuición” para la cabecita, y voy a decir que esta mezcla de lo que los clientes me pasan como referencias, descripciones, ideas y mi forma de pintar funciona casi 99,9% bien! Pinto bastante rápido, y un bache de cuatro cabezas me lleva sólo dos semanas de terminar, así que los clientes son aceptados de forma el primero que viene es el primero en terminar. Intento no limitar mis clientes con posiciones, así que pueden mandarme cuantas cabezas quieran. Y principalmente no hay que esperar porque no tengo lista de espera. Pueden enviar las muñecas rápidamente, 2-3 semanas y están conmigo. Trabajo en encargos cinco días de la semana, y pueden contactarme por una nueva comisión casi todos los días. A veces me piden que pinte a algún actor, un personaje de videojuego o de un cómic. Es siempre muy divertido ayudar a otros a crear los personajes de sus sueños. Siempre intento alcanzar las expectativas del cliente, y estoy muy agradecida de que me confían.

Do you have a workplace to share with us? How do you organize to do face-ups?
Yes, I have a special bjd "corner" in my bed room without straight daylight in my city apartment and a similar one in my country house. Nothing extraordinary but everything I need is there: a wide table with many drawers to have the most often used items at hand, a comfortable work chair to take care of my back and neck, a lamp imitating dayight (the winter season is rather long in Russia). I use a part of a storage room to work with the sealant, I need to keep an eye on the humidity and temperature levels. As I often travel between my city apartment and my country house I keep all my craft supplies and instruments in special compact boxes with handles to be able to take all items I need for a particular order with me. The photos are a big commission of Splatoon Squid was really much fun to make (the photo shows only about 1/2 of the batch). And there is also an interesting order to paint George Michael on a Pukipuki faceplate.

¿Tienes un espacio de trabajo para compartir con nosotros? ¿Cómo te organizas para hacer los maquillajes?
Si, tengo una esquina especial para las BJDs en mi habitación, la cual no tiene luz del día en mi apartamento, y una similar en mi casa de campo. No es nada extraordinario, pero todo lo que necesito está ahí. Una tabla ancha con muchos cajones que tienen objetos a usar a mano, una silla cómoda para mi cuello y espalda, y una lámpara imitando la luz diaria (el invierno es bastante largo en Rusia). Uso parte de una habitación para trabajar con el sellador, ya que necesito prestar atención a la humedad y temperatura. A menudo viejo entre mi departamento y la casa de campo, así que tengo todos los instrumentos en cajas compactas con manijas que me dejan llevarlos y accederlos cuando los necesito. Una comisión de Splatoon Squid, fue muy divertida (la foto sólo muestra la mitad del bache). Y luego hay un pedido de pintar a George Michael en un Pukipuki.

Are there any materials that are your favourites? Have you changed your supplies over time?
I think, before starting faceups for my own dolls I read almost all articles about materials and supplies I could find at that time and made quite a big list of things to buy! I chose professional materials of high quality, as I'm always guided by the motto "We're not that rich to buy crap" Zoukeimura, Mr Super Clear Matt with UV, Tamiya, Panpastels, Rembrandt pastels, thinnest brushes, Derwent watercolor pencils, high quality lashes, shimmer, good respirator and gloves etc. I must admit the items were worth the money, so my current list of supply hasn't changed much. I almost don't use acrylics, I prefer pastels for skin textures and shades, pencils and brushes for lines like lashes and eyebrows.

¿Hay algunos materiales que sean tus favoritos? ¿Has cambiado durante el tiempo?
Creo, antes de empezar a pintar mis propias muñecas, leí casi todos los artículos sobre los materiales que pude encontrar en ese momento, y me hice una gran lista de cosas para comprar. Elegí materiales profesionales de alta calidad, porque siempre me guío por el principio de “no somos tan ricos para comprar basura”: Zoukeimura, Mr Super Clear Matt UV, Tamiya, Panpastels, Rembrandt pastels, pinceles finitos, lápices acuarelados Derwent, brillos, pestañas de calidad, un buen respirador y guantes, etc. Debo admitir que muchos valen lo que cuestan, así que mi lista no ha cambiado mucho. No uso acrílicos, y prefiero pasteles para la textura de la cara y las sombras, pinceles para las líneas finas como las cejas o pestañas.

You also offer accessories like jewelry, and fantasy parts like horns or ears. How did this all begun?
I remember that the reason I started to sculpt of polymer clay was that I couldn't find any descent and natural looking floral jewellery in a small size in the BJD market. My very first items of polymer clay were roses and orchids headbands for my own Minifee and Littlefee. I started to think how and of which material I can make them myself. Polymer clay has a lot of pros, if baked as per the technology it's very durable, it can be transparent or sparkling, the colours palette is big, the material is relatively light in weight and not very expensive. I came to the conclusion that it's perfect for doll stuff! I also liked the trending idea about parts attached to BJD body with magnets, that Fairyland, Soom and Luts reduced at that time. A BJD character could combine not only a human soul but also one of a forest or a sea creature - this is so cool!! Having done those first roses and orchids I was actually surprised that I can sculpt relatively well, my fingers can work with tiny details, despite I hadn’t studied sculpting anywhere. I just watched a couple of YouTube videos on roses. Then, based on my fantasy animals sketches from my childhood and the early studentship I made my first deer antlers, sparkling cat ears, fennec fox and banana monkey ears for my Pukifees. I wanted my baby dolls crew to look as cute and sweet as possible! Then started to take clients' commissions and sculpt based on their designs or descriptions. And I'm always very excited to sculpt cosplay magnetic items!

También ofrecen accesorios como joyas y partes de fantasía como cuernos u orejitas. ¿Cómo comenzó todo esto?
Recuerdo que la razón por la que empecé a esculpir era que no podía encontrar ninguna joyería de estilo florar que fuera decente y en un tamaño adecuado en el mercado de las BJDs. Mis primeros objetos fueron vinchas de rosas y orquídeas para mi propia Minifee y Littlefee. Comencé a pensar cómo y qué tipo de material podía usar. La masilla de polímero tiene muchas ventas, y si la cocinás como pide la tecnología es muy durable, puede ser transparente o brillante, tiene una gran cantidad de colores y el material es relativamente ligero y no demasiado caro. Llegué a la conclusión de que es perfecta para cosas de muñecas. También me gustaba la idea de partes agregadas a las BJDs con imanes, que Fairyland, Soom y Luts habían reducido en ese momento. Un personaje BJD podía combinar no sólo una parte humana pero también un criatura de un bosque o marina, y eso me parecía fantástico. Habiendo hecho esas rosas y orquídeas, estaba sorprendida de que podía esculpir bastante bien, y que mis dedos podían trabajar detalles pequeños a pesar de que no había estudiado modelado. Sólo miré un par de videos de YouTube sobre rosas. Luego, basado en mis bosquejos de nimales de fantasía hice algunos cuernos de cervatillos, orejas de gatos y zorros, y orejas de banana para mis Pukifees. Quería que mi grupo se viera tan adorable como posible. Luego, comencé a tomar encargos de mis clientes basados en sus diseños. ¡Siempre me entusiasme modelar algunas cosas magnéticas!

You also have very special accessories like watermelon rabbit ears, mushroom fox ears, and a incredible variety of horns! What inspired you to offer this? Do you have any favourite?
I've always got inspired by fairies, unicorns, mermaids, fairytales, and the beauty and perfection of nature. I usually follow my imagination waves. When I really get into a concept I draw it in colour in my sketchbook and then in between of custom orders try to prepare it. Especially when I travel to beautiful places, admire how nicely the nature created a particular detail, notice it's texture, shape, some interesting colour a concept just pops up! I love creating nautical pieces like mermaid fins and bras, butterfly wings, sparkling crowns and tiaras, glass fairy bags, strange horns and antlers, butterfly rings, floral earrings, un-casual shoes and tiny colourful wigs! Just anything my own dolls would love to wear! The fruit theme was born very easily and rather silly - I was cutting a big sweet watermelon in pieces for my son and they resembled me mouse ears, haha, then I just extended this idea further.

También tienes accesorios muy especiales como esas orejas de conejo-sandía, zorros hongos, y una variedad increíble de cuernos. ¿Qué te inspiró a ofrecer esto? ¿Tienes un favorito?
Siempre me han inspirado las hadas, los unicornios, las sirenas, los cuentos de hada, y la belleza y perfección de la naturaleza. Usualmente sigo las olas de mi imaginación. Cuando relamente me gusta un concepto, lo dibujo en color en mi libro y luego intento prepararlo entre encargos. Especialmente cuando viajo a lugares bonitos, admiro qué cosas lindas la naturaleza creó. Miro los detalles, noto la textura, la forma, alguna forma interesando, un concepto, ¡sólo sale! Me encanta crear pieces náuticas como aletas de sirenas y sostenes, alas de mariposa, coronas brillantes, alas de hada, bolsas, cuernos, aros, zapatos no comunes y alas brillantes. ¡Cualquier cosa que mis muñecas quieran usar! El tema de las frutas salió de una forma muy simple y casi tonta—estaba cortando un sandía en partes para mi hijo, y me parecieron orejas de conejo, así que luego extendí esta idea.
