Interview with Eve Studio

Hello and welcome to a new interview: the first of 2015! This time, I had the honor and priviledge to interview Eve Studio, known by their BJDs pets and mostly their cute adorable BJD kittens. The one answering the questions is Alex, who is in charge of communication, web design and more.

As always, the interview is both in English and Spanish, and all the images were used with Eve Studio's permission.

Hello! Thank you so much for doing the interview!
Alex: Hello! First of all we'd like to express gratitude for your interest in our work!
¡Hola! ¡Muchas gracias por hacer la entrevista!

I always start with a classic question: how did you find about BJDs?
Alex: There are several people involved in most of Eve projects. Olga is the primary creative engine, she designs most of the dolls. And the whole idea of getting into BJD belongs to her. The idea turned up pretty much spontaneously several years ago and it's been evolving ever since taking on new shapes and forms. When this whole thing started we knew next to nothing about the world of Ball Jointed Dolls. We were not collectors and we were not aware of the huge community which existed around the subject. We were looking for something to do outside the office space, and at first we had no idea that Olga's hobby could grow into a business.

Your pets are gorgeous! How did you decided to start the line? Do you have an artistic background/education?
Alex: Thanks! Yes, we are both digital artist. Though Olga was trained as a medical doctor, she never worked as one. Instead she worked as a web-designer for many years. And in case you are wondering, who I am :) I come from the world of video-game development and 3D graphics. Initially I assisted Olga in her transition from hand made dolls to products which are designed in 3D. Today my jobs inside the studio (aside from being Olga's husband) is to handle all the logistics and communication. Occasionally I do initial designs for some dolls (most recent being the Baby Dragon), but mostly my function is an administrative one.
¡Sus mascotas son adorables! ¿Cómo decidieron empezar esa línea? ¿Tienen alguna educación o formación artística?
Alex: ¡Gracias!

Why did you decide to work with 3D printing? Will you share a little about the process of these dolls?
Alex: Because of it's efficiency, though not only that. Computer and apps like Zbrush are amazing tools which just make artists life so much easier. Any creative task still contains lots of tedious labor, but instead of making one doll at a time, we can print several. And we can make iterations improving on the existing design. Each doll still requires lots of manual work, that's why it takes months to make a single doll. But without a computer and 3D printing technology it would be plain impossible. It would never go beyond hobby.
We design our dolls in Zbrush and we print them using SLS method for the most part. The material is very durable (bulletproof compared to resin), but unfortunately printers of this type don't do color so we have to dye and airbrush every single part. And that's very time consuming. We've spent lots of effort establishing the best methods which would work best with the material.

How many people work at Eve?
Alex: Well, it's Olga who does most of the designs. Our friend and colleague Svetlana Germanova is an amazing asset too. She handles the most laborious tasks, like cleaning the parts, assembling the dolls and she also applies color. Before Svetlana came alone, Olga had to handle all that on her own. Svetlana also designed the magnetic joints which we use extensively now.
We have our trusty partners, who do printing and molding for us. They are external companies but we consider them to be the extension of the studio. And also there's me :) I'm totally useless when it comes to manual crafts, so I do all the web-design, email, logistics, shipping, packing , etc.

Do you have a personal collection of dolls?
Alex: No, actually. I believe Olga has one tiny doll she keeps as a mascot, but other than that, no.

You also have a line of fashion dolls, that are really nice! Do you want to share more about them?
Alex: You mean, human dolls? :) They are in fact Olga's favorite. The success of our pets came a surprise. We love our pets and they help to pay the bills, but Olga's main drive come from her ongoing projects of fantasy creatures. [LINK]

[LINK]

Sadly, the BJD hobby is suffering a lot from recasted/bootlegged dolls. What is your statement on this regard?
Alex: Well, since we view it as a serious business, we are very aware of this problem. To the best of our knowledge, our dolls has not yet been bootlegged in any form. But we realize that it can happen. And we decided a long time a go that if it does, we are not going to be hysterical about it. It's a problem that everyone faces, and bootleggers will never reach the same level quality anyway. And since our dolls are printed we are more concerned about our 3D models than about someone doing a recast.

Finally, anything else you want to share with us?
Alex: We are very curious and hopeful about new technologies and where they can take us. Over the years we got lots of feedback from people and some of them suggest that doll are not meant to be made with computers. We strongly disagree with that and we hope that more doll-makers will embrace new emerging technologies.
