Interview with Frappzilla Studio

Hello everyone! Thanks for bearing with me with the one-day delay, but here we are with a new interview!

This time, the spotlight is on Fee from Frappzilla Studio, a French-based studio dedicated to make custom doll wigs in a variety of fibers :D. The studio is run by both Fee and Alex (aka Zilla), her significant other. You can see them on the photo! :D

As always, the interview is both in English and Spanish, and all the photos are used with permission from Fee. There are some images presented as links, in order to allow the interview to load faster. Links to Frappzilla's store and social sites are at the bottom of the interview!

Anyways, onto the interview! :D

Hi there! Thank you for doing the interview :3
Hello! Thank you so much for interviewing me. It is such an honour to be featured here alongside some of the world’s most talented BJD artists. I am Fee from Frappzilla Studio; a completely one-of-a-kind wig shop primarily for BJDs but also for Groove Dolls and other Fashion dolls such as Ever After High and Monster High. I work with my other half Alex (aka Zilla) and this is our full-time job. We use a variety of animal-friendly fibres and mix our own dyes, giving a new approach to conventional wig shops.
¡Hola! Gracias por hacer la entrevista :3
¡Hola!

You have a gorgeous collection of BJDs, and recently, you’ve got a really beautiful Blythe! How did you find out about BJDS? How did you start on the doll collecting hobby?
Ah thank you so much! I actually first found out about BJDs all the way back in 2004. I can’t believe I’ve been in this hobby for over a decade! I used to be a pixel artist and a friend at the time sent me a photo of Volks Shiro and Jun Tachibana for some outfit ideas. I thought they were the most unusual, fascinating dolls I had ever seen and began to research obsessively. Needless to say, I got my first doll as soon as I could afford to and I haven’t looked back ever since. I got my first Blythe around the same time but sadly she was a little neglected after my first BJD arrived. (Sorry old girl!).
After the launch of Frappzilla Studio, we were asked a lot of times whether or not we could do reroots for Blythe and so I invested in a little custom girl to experiment on recently. That is something we still have to master though as it is a completely different format and my only experience has been Monster High reroots so far!

How did you started on making BJD wigs? Do you have a workspace to share with us?
Wigs have always been my greatest passion in the doll hobby and I would spend hours designing wigs that most wig makers said were impossible to make. I was lucky in some cases but for the most part I was always refused. I think that wigs can truly transform a character design into something really unique. So, during my frustrations of trying to find a wigmaker willing to give my ideas a go, I fell into wig making and this is where Frappzilla Studio started.
At first I didn’t think I could do it. I suffer with a co-ordination problem known as dyspraxia. It makes my movements clumsy and doing things with my hands can be very difficult, and because of that I had crippling low self-esteem. Zilla, encouraged me to try and told me that he’d learn how to do it too so he could find ways around my problem and develop little hacks to help me out. We both really enjoyed the experience which not only bought us closer together by working on a project together, but physically too.

Originally Alex and I were in a long-distance relationship and were separated by almost 1000 miles. I lived in England and he lived in Italy. It was a very difficult time for us but - determined to bridge the gap between us - started looking at options of what we could do together to earn money to live. Due to visa complications we needed to be able to have work that could move us between countries. Since we both had enjoyed making wigs during his 6 month visa visit to the UK, we thought we’d offer our services to the public and to help others who hadn’t been able to find someone to make their unique designs. We never expected it to take off the way it has and for that we are extremely grateful for everyone’s support. Not only for keeping us from being separated, but for helping me regain a little bit of confidence too.
We now live in Magny-le-Hongre. A tiny village in France next to Disneyland Paris in a tiny little one bedroom apartment. Since we don’t have a lot of space, our living room is our work area. It’s always a little messy because loose fibres like to stick to everything. But it’s nice to be able to work from home, and, ultimately together.

Besides having a lot of styles for wigs, you also offer a lot of fibers types, which are all animal friendly! Do you have a favorite type of fiber to work with? And a most popular type of fiber among your customers?
In the beginning, I lived in Devon (where Alpaca farms are very common), but being a passionate lover of animals I wanted to ensure that we were buying our raw alpaca from a decent farm where the animals were well looked after. We did our research and now work with exclusive sellers in my old local area. I enjoyed working with alpaca a lot, but it wasn’t really the right fibre for me to achieve the kind of wigs I loved so I kept looking into other animal friendly fibres to use alongside the alpaca. We tried so many in our research - Fibre made from nettles, seaweed, faux proteins, synthetic mohair, and banana to name a few. All had both their good and bad points and I knew I wanted something vegan and vegetarian friendly and found that soy, although a messy nightmare to work with, ticked all the right boxes. We also found that rose was quite close to soy and offered us a pure white colour, which soy could not. Between the two of them and alpaca we found our perfect combinations.
We mixed our own non-toxic dyes, found ways to minimise transfer of colour onto resin and formulated our own secret processes that would transform the soy from ratty, shedding knots, into silky and smooth, shiny wigs with vibrant colour pay-off and heat resistance.
As a result we are able to offer completely one of a kind wigs, in virtually any shade you require and while we are still experimenting with styles, we are willing to give most things a go!

Left: Soy fibre on its freshly died state without an processing.
Right: ombre dye on alpaca.
By far, our most popular fibre is soy because it is so easy to style, eco-friendly, and able to be dyed in almost any colour. A lot of people were very interested in banana (because how cool would it be to say you own a wig made of banana?!) but we have since decided to discontinue it just because it’s too frizzy by itself. (It can be nicely paired with other fibres however.) People are still very interested in alpaca - as it has become very popular within the doll community - and while we haven’t had time to create special custom listings for those fibres, it’s something we are looking to do shortly. Because of the lengthy process of processing alpaca, we’ve employed the help of family who are coming to visit us throughout September. So watch this space for a lot of unique alpaca wigs coming in Autumn!
We are continuously testing new fibres and experimenting, hoping to find new fibres with their own qualities that we can add to our portfolio.
Personally, as a previous lover of faux fur wigs I prefer soy, which is like a glorified, fancy fur. Unfortunately it’s really horrible to work with before it has been made. It ends up everywhere. On clothes, in your food. We’ve even found it down the street from our apartment which isn’t even on the ground floor. Just this morning I accidentally dyed half of our white shirts a lovely shade of pink because a small bit of red soy snuck into the washing machine. It really does make for the best final wig though so I would say it’s worth it!

Your portfolio also has an amazing variety of styles and works! Do you have a personal favorite commission/wig style? And a most popular style?
Our most popular style is the short boy cut style or the asymmetrical style. I don’t particularly have a favourite style because each one can be customised in so many ways. Because we have total placement control, we can decide if we want streaks, blends, perfect splits for 50/50 wigs and it works in all styles. The 50/50 split style is also really popular because the divide is really precise.
One of my personal favourite wigs though, was my boy Frapp’s. I had owned the character as a doll for many years but I was never able to find someone who was capable of making a high ponytail, let alone in vibrant colours. I never expected that I’d be able to make it myself as it’s quite complicated in its making. It was definitely a challenge but I’m so glad I was finally able to own his wig and he truly feels like his character was always intended to be.

Regarding your doll collection, which dolls do you currently own? Do you have a preferred company?
I currently own dolls from an array of companies. I have a weakness for older dolls with stylised features. I never seem to be able to bond with anything too realistic despite having a massive appreciation for those who do own them. I just find something very nostalgic about the wide eyes, exaggerated pointy noses and pouty lips and I like my dolls to feel like, well… dolls rather than miniature humans. I’m a big fan of a lot of artists in the community right now, especially Merrydollround, Irrealdoll, Lilycat and Little Rebel. I think their sculpts are so unique, and I have such respect for artists who started out as hobbyists.
I also really like the event heads that companies like Luts give away. They are so often underrated and really inexpensive compared to most, on the secondary market. I always try to urge beginners who don’t want to spend a lot towards those. I’ve always been very passionate about hybrids just because it can save you so much money and the event heads are great little things to experiment with, without breaking the bank.
I also have a great appreciation for Resinsoul minis. I only own one myself, but I think that while they aren’t your conventional ‘pretty’ doll, they have a lot of personality and potential in the right hands for a considerably cheaper amount of money than your average MSD doll. I think there is something quite endearing and captivating about their wonky little faces.
My doll family isn’t anywhere near as big as it used to be as I had to sell a lot of my old crew to fund the start of this business and moving away to France. My oldest doll is a Volks Syo called Jango, who I had from 2005 and Circa, my Customhouse Hyun who I have owned since 2007. I’m quite emotionally attached to him.
On top of them I also have;
  • Mog, a Dollish U-me
  • Clipper, a Merrydollround Merry
  • Taxi, a modified F60 Soony/Juri Boy
  • Frapp, an F60 Celine boy
  • Roscoe, a Little Rebel Seven
  • An NF Family MNF
  • Sooki, a Juri 2012 Event head.
I have Pukifee Juri, Pukifee Halloween, LTF Juri 2013, MNF Des, Unoa Lusis, LTF Wink Ante, and F60 Rin – all unnamed and currently mostly just for modeling wigs but I’m looking to turn them into character dolls too once I can get bodies for the and find time to make their own wigs. There are a few junk and practice heads that I have solely for wig making.
I’m also waiting for a Roxydoll Eun-U and Zilla is awaiting his first doll; a Merry doll Round Fang. I’m currently saving up to do some hybridising of event heads myself. Specifically with the Luts 2014 Christmas/unicef head and Winter 2013 sculpt, who I owned before, sold and regretted it a little bit.
On top of the BJDs we also own 2 Pullips, 2 Dals, 2 Isuls, a Taeyang, a Licca, a Blythe, a Disney Animator Doll, and some Monster High and Ever After high repaints.
Estoy bastante atada emocionalmente a él.
Además, tengo:

  • Mog, Dollish U-me.
  • Clipper, una Merry Doll Round Merry.
  • Taxi, un F60 Soony/Juri boy, modificado.
  • Frapp, un F60 Celine boy.
  • Roscoe, un Little Rebel Seven.

Would you like to share how the process to make a wig is? How long does it take?
The actual process for making a wig is quite complicated, but we have tried to streamline it as best we can on Etsy. We have a lot of pre-dyed fibre and a vast colour chart, and a lot of styles that can be easily customised in a wide range of sizes. Most people seem to want a wig within the styles we offer but we have a lot of other unique styles in the works too, such as pigtails, braids, shaved styles and undercuts.
It starts by us making a wig cap. This doesn’t take too long on our part but requires lots of frequent recoats and needs to dry completely which can take quite a bit of time. If we need to dye the fibre, this will be done while the cap dries. Once dyed, we use a special bath that will lift any excess dye from the fibre to reduce colour transfer and then we’ll do our own conditioning method to make the fibres soft and silky.

Frappzilla Studio's Color Chart

After it has dried out (which can take a couple of days in soy’s case) we need to prep the fibres ready for use. This takes at least an hour of lots of manual processing.
Alpaca takes much longer as all of the fibre needs to be washed, conditioned, brushed and then dyed. It might not seem like a lengthy procedure but the alpaca is very dusty and often has plant matter caught between the fibres. It can take days to process 1 kilo of alpaca.

Alpaca on different states of processing.

Then comes the fun part! Making the wig! It can take anywhere from 3 to 9 hours depending on the style and will again, need to dry overnight before we do the final layer and part. Once that is done, we take photos, send them to the customer and after approval, gift wrap the wigs and get them ready for shipment.
Overall it is a very long process, especially if we are dying to a specific shade as that can take a couple of tries, or multiple in some cases. Ombre can also take quite a long time too, especially with soy as the fibre needs to be dry before adding a new transition to avoid the colour bleeding up the hair.
