Interview with Atelier Momoni

I know we are not beginning a new month, but this interview got delayed due to some events... however, better late than never! This time, please welcome Lola from Atelier Momoni! She does everything, from clothes, to dolls, faceups and now she is even attempting urethane eyes!

As always, the interview is both in English and Spanish, and all photos are used with permission. Hope you will enjoy it as much as I did!

Hi there! Thank you so much for accepting the interview!
Hi, I’m Lola Palacios and I’m from Alicante, España. I’m also known as Atelier Momoni+, although I don’t really have a nickname.
Hola!

Let’s start with the basics: how did you found about BJDs? Did it take you a long time to get your first doll?
I met BJDs while I was a student. But it wasn’t until 2004, thanks to some college friends, that I bought my first BJD. Yes! It took me long to get my first doll, more than a year! I saved everything I could while I was finishing the major, and by Christmas I had enough to order her.

And from there, how did you started sewing for dolls?
Well, basically when my first doll arrived, a DOC Pitts, I had nothing to put her on that would fit her nicely. So I decided to grab some of my old patterning books and start making her something pretty. I remember I had just registered on Den of Angels and started a gallery to share photos of my doll. One day somebody sent me a PM asking me if I would sell the dress my doll was wearing, and that is how all started~

Then you started making dolls! How did you made this decision?
After more than 10 years in the hobby as an artist, as a creator it was an inevitable step. I love collecting BJDs and I always look that the doll fits my taste and to Atelier Momoni’s style. So I thought it was logical to attempt to create my own BJD with my desired features, such as a smiling :3 face, very hard to find until some years ago.
¡Luego comenzaste a hacer muñecas!

Your dolls are very pretty and they have unique features. Where you looking for a particular aesthetic? Do you have an artistic background or did you learn by your own?
Thank you! Basically, I wanted to create more happy faced dolls in a middle/small size that would relate to my drawing style. I’m very influenced by Gentaro Araki and his Unoa, I overthought it and started with it. I have a major in Art, which includes drawing, anatomy and sculpture, which is very useful while making the human body and the doll’s movement. Learning to make the joints and the inner channels was more complicated, a mixture of self-learning with the help of the book “How the Unoa Zero was made”.

Do you have any workspace to share with us?
Yes, of course. In fact I have the sewing zone and the sculpture zone. I also have a mini faceup corner~

You also do faceups and have started making urethane eyes. How did you started and what motivated to learn?
I started doing faceups with my first doll and I have been practicing little by little. Regarding the eyes, it has been a need I had to make small fantasy eyes. I have always loved those gorgeous eyes with flowers and crystals, but nobody makes small sizes. Besides, it is really gratifying to be able to create a doll from head to toe with a specific look, and make it all yourself.
Además,¡maquillas tus muñecas y has comenzado a hacer ojos. ¿Cómo comenzaste y qué te motivó a aprender?
Empecé a maquillar con mi primera muñeca y he ido practicando poco a poco.

This year you participated in LDoll. Have you been to other cons? Would you share the experience with us?
Yes! And it has been a wonderful experience, and I hope that the LDoll staff will continue making more editions! I have assisted to several cons in different cities, and each time I go I think it is impressive. Everything is amazing! From being able to see the artists’ work in person, to meet people in person and hug them. And most important, the love and support we get, it helps you to keep going and create more things.
Este año participaste del LDoll. ¿Has ido a otras convenciones? ¿Compartirías la experiencia con nosotros?
Si!

So far all your dolls are girls. Have you thought about sculpting boys? And other sizes?
Yes! Basically I have done only girls up to this date, in fact my personal collection only has two boys. I do not discard the idea of someday making a boy and I even dare to make bigger sizes!
Has ahora, todas tus muñecas son mujeres. ¿Has pensado en esculpir varones? ¿Otros tamaños?
Si!

Sadly, the hobby is suffering due to recasts. What is your stance in that matter?
I’m completely against it, without a doubt. I personally always saved during X amount of time to be able to buy an original doll. And I still do it!

Finally, is there something you would like to share with us?
I simply want to thank you for thinking of me for this interview. You have been very kind with me and I have loved to collaborate.
