Interview with SartoriaJ

Hello everybody! This is another year, and we are starting with interviews! I usually do not post interviews on January, but this time is something special. Please, let me introduce you to Donatella and Jay, from SartoriaJ. They are a shop that creates amazing outfits, shoes and wigs for dolls.

As always, the interview is both in English and Spanish, and all photos and videos are used with permission. Also, some of the photos are linked to the sales pages!

Hello! Thanks a lot for doing the interview :D
Hello! It is really an honor to have an interview with you. We have been reading your blog and love your interviews. We are really happy to have an opportunity to introduce SartoriaJ to your readers. SartoriaJ is a small bjd shop selling bid clothes and accessories and it is run by Donatella and Jay. Donatella designs the products and Jay takes charge of the rest. We started an Etsy shop on spring of 2015 and expanding the shop since then. Since summer of 2016, we started working with Dollshe and preparing various projects with him. Also we opened a new site on December of 2016 and we want to try new projects like crowdfunding through our site.
¡Hola! ¡Muchas gracias por hacer la entrevista!
¡Hola! Es realmente un honor que nos entrevistes. Hemos estado leyendo tu blog y adoramos tus entrevistas.

How did you found about BJDs? Also, you have previously worked with other BJDs companies, too! Would you share with us that experience?
Donatella: I majored fashion design. Fashion designer is an interesting job but has to be sensitive to trend. A design can be easily evaluated by trend and I didn’t get used to that part and decided to do something else. I was staying in Italy at that moment and since I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do for rest of my life, I just took a lot of different courses. I learned to make bags, shoes, jewelry and etc. One thing I was sure was, I wanted to make something valuable which doesn’t change easily as time passes.
Since I was a little girl, I loved old classic movies like “Gone with the wind”, “Pride and prejudice” and “Wuthering heights”. Dresses in those classic movies were so beautiful and it looked like it came from another world. Since I grew up in Korea, I didn’t have an opportunity to see those kinds of dresses before. I wanted to have a chance to get close to those beautiful dresses, so I decided to learn about opera & movie costumes. After I graduated from the academy, I started working at “Tirella” which is the largest movie & opera costume company in Italy. While working at Tirelli, I was surrounded by all kinds of beautiful clothes and it was one of my happiest moments in my life. Experiences at Tirelli is still an inspiration to my work and I still like making classic period clothing.
I got to know about ball jointed dolls after I came to Korea. I came back to Korea suddenly and there were not that many places which made classic period clothing in Korea. While I were searching through various companies, I got a chance to work in Iplehouse and since then I have been designing bjd clothes. The first thing I made in Iplehouse was “Opera” series. First it was little bit hard to reduce the dresses in doll sizes but it was also very interesting and fun job too. Next I designed “The Addition” and “Carved Heritage” series and started to make fantasy costumes as well as period clothing. Since then, I started to make accessories, weapons as well as clothes. Sometimes I get stuck in the process but always feel really great when a series ends.
I think a doll clothing is an amazing field where I can express my fantasy and I am very satisfied with my work and I also love my job.
Aprendí a hacer bolsos, zapatos, joyas y demás.

You make amazing items, especially those tailored suits! How did you started?
When we first started the business, we selected two main items. One was tailored suit line and we are developing it as our premium line. We think suit maximizes the beauty of a male body. We want to make a suit which is just like actual human’s suit so we choose everything very carefully from fabric to little buttons. Currently we are making a khaki wool jacket which has a little bit of rough texture. It has a beautiful khaki color with warm feeling and to keep this warm feeling, we dyed the wooden button several times to match it with the jacket.
Currently we only have few type of tailored suits but we will release more styles throughout this year. Not many are sold yet but we are sure that everyone will like our premium suits if they actually try it on their dolls. Our tailor made tailored suits for more than 30 years and also worked with Freedomteller before working with us. He worked with Freedomteller when they first started the business but got separated after few years. He went back and made tailored suits for humans but after our long persuasion, he decided to work with us again. We are sure that you will fall for his suits just like us if you actually see them!

You also have period clothing! Is there a period you like the most? Do you offer these as commissions or in stock?
Donatella: In case of period clothing, I take charge of everything, from designing to manufacturing. I am free and happy when I am making period clothing. Most interesting part in period clothing is that each costume reflects the culture and historical situation. Many interesting stories are hidden under the little details of the costumes, so it gives an opportunity to imagine a lot of things. Before I started working at Iplehouse, I preferred Victorian and Edwardian era but now I don’t have a preference. Now I usually get an inspiration from a painting or a movie. When I find an attracting color or a silhouette, I make an outfit of that era. Nowadays I am really into Pre-raphaelite paintings and working on a medieval knight and heroine like Ophelia. br /> When we first started our Etsy shop, we offered customized outfits but we don’t offer it anymore. Currently we are developing several different items like shoes, wigs, eyes and etc. We don’t have enough time for customized outfits and decided to suspend it for now. Instead we are considering about crowdfunding for customers who are looking for special items. If we can gather certain number of people who wants same clothes, we will make it in our style. For instance, currently we are making a medieval knight’s armor in SD size. We don’t want the armor to prevent posing or scratch the skin so we are making a leather armor and dying it so it will look like an antique steel armor. Also we divided the armor into several parts and assembled it with an adjustable string so you can put it on almost any SD size. It fits on Dollshe 28M, Iplehouse EID and SID and I think it will fit on almost any SD body. Since the leather master is making all of them by hand, we will only have 15 limited pieces. If there are a lot of customers who are interested in the armor, we are going to make a chest, and leg armor which will go with current armor.

SartoriaJ also offers some stunning heels and shoes! How is the process to design them and build them? Which sizes do you have available?
Donatella: Shoes designing is an area which I had a lot of interest for long time and I also took a separate course in Italy. When we make doll shoes, we follow the steps I learned at that time.
Before I draw the sketch. I usually select the material first before designing the clothes too since a beautiful fabric can be an inspiration too. First, I select the material and accessories and lay them all around. While looking at them, I draw a sketch and make a pattern at last. To make a perfect sample, I talk with the shoes factory and adjust the details. Currently we are making shoes for Iplehouse and Dollshe dolls but we will expand it to other sizes throughout this year. Now our customers gives us information about whether the shoes fits on other dolls or not. Also we usually use lace up closure or a buckle so it can be worn by other dolls too.
Currently we are making basic styles but we will try different styles like man’s dress shoes with unique colors too.

You also make wigs, eyes and jewelry. Which materials do you use? On which sizes do you focus?
In case of wigs, we get samples from several different companies but it is really hard to get one we really like. We are working with two different companies and we will be able to release them soon. One company deals with mohair (synthetic and real) and another company deals with high-heat resistant wig. Currently we are developing short man’s wig and 4-5”, and 5-6” wig with less hair. (Most wigs have too much hair.)
We are also developing handmade glass eyes. It is low dome with smaller iris. We will release 12mm (6mm iris) and 6mm (3.5 mm) eyes which will fit on Dollshe Classic and Dollshe Fashion line.
In case of jewelry, we usually make them when it is needed for the clothes and prefer the items which goes well with various items,

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us? Thank you for doing the interview!
Since we have our own site, we want to try new projects this year. In last 2 years since we started the shop, we got to know a lot of friends who can help us in developing items. And we are also open to any kind of idea, so if you have anything you want to make up, feel free to contact us and we will try to find a way to make it possible. Thank you for reading our interview and happy New Year!
