Interview with Summomo

Hello there! I know we are a couple days ahead, but it is time for a new interview! This time, let me introduce you to Maria, the artist of Summomo! In case you don't know her, she does amazing footwear for BJD by hand, and has several styles and materials.

As always, the interview is both in English and Spanish, and all photos are used with permission. This time, though, the translation is the English version, so I apologize for any mistakes. So, without further ado...!

Hi there! Thank you for accepting the interview!
Hello! Thanks to you for counting with me for the interview. My name is Maria and I’m from Spain, precisely from Malaga, also known as the Sun’s Coast. My nickname comes from Chobbits manga, the small robot called Summomo. It was a personal joke at home, because I’m to active, getting oriented on trips, doing to-do lists… I used it on my personal blog and in forums, but I never thought it would end up as a definitive name. I didn’t want to lose my contacts when I started my store, and Summomo stayed as an official name! Maybe the logo is more personal than the name, which is a momiji leaf. I love Japan ♥
¡Hola! ¡Muchas gracias por aceptar la entrevista!
Hola!!

How did you meet BJDs? Did you collect other dolls before?
I knew about dolls since 2008, but until 2010 I didn’t had my first resin doll at home (a Faryland Pukifee Ante).
Since everything in this hobby looked so expensive and hard to get to me, besides that I couldn’t find anything that would fit my style, I took advantage of it to learn to use my sewing machine. Now I see the stuff I made back in that time and they are terrible, but in those moments I felt so proud of having something for them to wear…
I have always loved miniatures and collected Sylvanian Families dolls. I do works on FIMO, but each time is harder to find time for it. Besides this, I also enjoy doing dioramas and doll accessories like felt plushies.
On my first trip to Japan, I met Momokos, but when I finally found out BJDs, it was what I have always wanted! Choose the sculpt and customize it as you like, with so many options for eyes, wigs… I loved it! But in this hobby it is so hard to get only one doll, hehehe.

And from there: how did you decided to start making footwear? And why did you decided to open the store?
Everything started when I was looking for shoes for my Minifee. Everything I found was a gothic style, with huge soles that look disproportionate. I found some basics one that, once I finally got them, were 1cm bigger. So I made a pair. I enjoyed a lot making them and did five more. My husband told me to try to sell them and, to my surprise, they sold! After that, I did some more and they sold again! That activated my creative side to try different models, boots, sandals… I have attempted some models for years, like the boots. And I always have in mind some details to remove or improve. On these seven years, the store has been growing little by little… Sometime ago I took a comparative photo for my personal blog of my first shoe, with the last one.

Currently, you have a big variety of shoes. Which materials do you prefer to work with? Do you have any workspace to share with us?
Most of my shoes are made with a very thin synthetic leather, but I also work with felt, fabrics and other stuff. I have templates of the bases and soles, to get them automatically and always on the same size, Minifee, which is the one I like the most. The rest of the sizes are handmade. I also have the template for the shoe boxes, which require assembling and stock when packaging times arrive. There is so much work behind a pair of shoes: I always have soles ready, boxes, different base colors… maybe what makes me more lazy is filling out postal service forms U_U When I started I used my computer desk, but I was always stressed because of the size. After moving houses, we mounted up an atelier when I have all the space required for all materials, and I’m able to work comfortable.

Have you participated on events and/or cons? What can you tell us about it?
I have participated on national events, and on 2013 I was on one of the most renowned ones, at Lyon. Without doubt, at European level the hobby is far more active. I guess that on the rest of Europe the crisis is not as noticeable as on Spain. I was happily surprise to see so many people enjoying the event, buy and take their own dolls.
¿Has participado en convenciones y/o eventos?

Regarding your selling organization: do you work with stocks, do pre-orders or take commissions?
I always have footwear on stock, but not all of them. There are so many models, colors and sizes… I made the basic shoes when requested, but there are complex models that require more time and I set them on pre-orders, to let people know it will take me between one or two weeks to send the order. Sometimes I do take commissions, but it is not common. There are so many brands and BJD models with different foots, and without having them physically with me, it is impossible to make a shoe. A French girl sent me a rubber copy of her doll’s feet, because she couldn’t find anything that would work for her. Sometimes, I get requested a special design, and that also motivates me to try and attempt new things.

Regarding BJDs. Do you have a personal collection? Which one is your favorite store?
When I started with the hobby, everything I had was really small (like Pukipuki of 11cm). I was up to eight of them, I believe, but then I fell in love with YoSD and since then it is the size I like the most, although I also own some MSD. My doll family is currently like this:
  • Fairyland Pukipuki Ruby, tan.
  • Fairyland Pukifee Nanuri16.
  • Fairyland Littlefee Ante, tan.
  • Fairyland Littlefee Pipi.
  • Fairyland Littlefee Chloe.
  • HaruCasting Adori.
  • Fairyland Realfee Pano.
  • Fairyland Minifee Chloe.
  • Elfdoll Smiling Soa on FL Minifee body.
  • Fairyland Minifee Seorin.
You could say my favorite brand is Fairyland, but I also like Iplehouse a lot, HaruCasting and AngelRegion. It is true that my style tends to be realistic and I like to do dioramas for the photo sessions. I guess that is why I find Minifees so hard to photograph. Keiko, my Elfdoll MSD has a more peculiar style that goes between Mori and Nature. I believe she is the one I enjoy sewing for the most.

  • Fairyland Pukipuki Ruby, tan.
  • Fairyland Pukifee Nanuri16.
  • Fairyland Littlefee Ante, tan.
  • Fairyland Littlefee Pipi.
  • Fairyland Littlefee Chloe.
  • HaruCasting Adori.
  • Fairyland Realfee Pano.
  • Fairyland Minifee Chloe.
  • Elfdoll Smiling Soa con cuerpo FL Minifee.
  • Fairyland Minifee Seorin.

  1. Thank you for this interview! I've met Maria at LDoll festival where we switched items, I treasure that memory as it was first one that artist from other country suggested we should do. I love to see the first pair and the hard work has totally paid off. ^__^ New pairs are always delicate and beautiful! <3 Also she is very sweet person and I love to see photos from her Soa and the dioramas.
