Interview with DreamStudio

Hello everyone!! Tomorrow starts a new month, so here we have a new interview! Please welcome Kira, Mell and Ann from DreamStudio: they are artisans who make amazing doll furniture. As always, all images are used with permission, and the post is translated to English and Spanish. Enjoy!

Hello, and thank you for doing the interview! Will you introduce yourself to readers?
Hello! Thank you for the invitation! :) Dream Studio is a small workshop in Saint Petersburg, Russia. We are making doll furniture for about 4 years already. Our main team consists of three people: Ann (founder and head designer), Kira (head of production) and Mell (designer/account manager).
¡Hola, y gracias por aceptar la entrevista! ¿Se introducirían a los lectores?
¡Hola!

How did you started with the doll hobby? And specifically with BJDs?
Ann: I started to get involved in a doll hobby as an adult; I was about 20 years old. I was fascinated by Japanese dolls, especially Momoko. I enjoyed photographing them, making OOAK, clothes, and miniatures. I also started making my first furniture back then. It was completely hand-made with improvised materials: cardboard, wooden stirrers, bamboo skewers, etc. Some models later served as the basis for the furniture from our store, only now they are made of quality materials and with professional equipment. I like BJD dolls very much, but unfortunately, don't own any yet.

And from there, how did Dream Studio started?
Some years ago, I worked in a gift shop where I had an opportunity to use a laser cutter, and it opened up new horizons for my hobby! After I made the first little stool, I felt like I couldn't stop now. My boss noticed my enthusiasm and offered me to prepare some furniture for the exhibition. My friends and hobby pals has helped me a lot in the process and were the first buyers. Later the gift shop decided to end this project, but I am still grateful for this first push to turn hobby into a job.
Soon after that, I spent almost all of my savings on my own laser cutter, signed up for a Corel Draw course and then left my job to start my own business. Even though I had no idea if it would be a success or not. The first year was hard, full of trial and error. Back then, I did all design, production, supply and problem solving by myself. Lots of things needed to be mastered from scratch, however my old hobby and job experience helped a lot. Nevertheless, all of it was accompanied with incredible inspiration! It was then that most of our models were created.
After two years, I no longer managed to do everything alone. That's where Kira appeared and started helping me, and after another year Mell joined us. We began to enter an even more professional level. Now everyone has their own tasks, some have their own assistants, and we can proudly call ourselves Dream Studio team!

You have an amazing range of furniture! What inspires you to create a new model? Do you base your designs in human-sized furniture?
Most of our models are based on human-sized furniture. Most often it's the furniture I discover on internet or something inspired by it. Sometimes I find some piece of furniture in a shop or a cafe and like it so much, that I just have to make a doll-size version of it. For example, our round table with openwork is based on the street cafe table near my house. And our rocking horse is a child's rocking horse from one shop in Paris. Some models don't have a prototype, we just take some basic furniture structure and a design idea and then work out the rest from scratch.

What is the process of creating a new furniture? Do you have any workspace to share with us?
First, I find a prototype or make up some idea myself, figure out the measurements - actually, it takes most of the time. Sometimes it is needed to make the first sample from paper or cardboard to check up with a doll. Then: fix the flaws, cut, assemble, paint, make a photo, and a new model is ready to appear in our Etsy shop! This is our workshop, where our furniture is made. My creative mess with lots of idea stickers and shelving with different samples and ready-made models. Our workshop is small but very cozy, with a great friendly atmosphere. We usually have fun and laugh a lot while working together, and often hang out outside of working hours.

Do you work by commissions or stock? What sizes do you offer? Can people buy DIY kits or everything is finished and ready to use?
Mostly we offer a list of ready-made models, that you can find in our shop. We already make furniture for 1/6 YoSD, 1/4 MSD, 1/3 SD и 70+ dolls and soon will add 1/8 models for little PukiFee's! We can also change the size of the model according to specific measurements, so it will fit your doll better. For example, we were once asked to make a special mannequin in a shape of a Doll Chateau body. We also made unique chairs with very long legs for Pasha Setrova and her Pasha Pasha dolls.
Sometimes, if we find the model interesting, we can make a custom one out of a client's photo or a drawing. Like a wheelchair from a Wicked musical, that we did a while ago. And one day we were requested three thousand tiny puzzle pieces for a unique doll room parquet!
I am very happy when someone orders an item I have wished to do for ages, but there wasn't enough time. Like a doll piano or a red London phone booth, which will soon appear in our store! We offer both DIY kits and ready to use items. People choose the kits more often: they are cheaper, safer for shipping and just simply fun to be put together and painted by oneself. Our buyers often describe it as a children's building kit for adults. :)

Do you want to share anything else with us?
Our upcoming plans include adding a bunch of new models to our shop and to complete a brand new model of a collapsible roombox. In addition, I have long wanted to make folding furniture for those doll hobbyists, who don't have much storage space. In secret - I am already finishing some models!

  2. So many interesting things are now coming out of Russia. They appear to have a very active--and creative--BJD community. I'll be checking out Ann's, Kira's and Mell's etsy shop for furniture. I wonder what material they used to make the piano keys? They look so real!
