Interview with AtelierMeringue

Hello everyone! It is time for another interview, so please welcome Marisa from AtelierMeringue. She makes amazing and colorful wigs, so I hope you'll enjoy this interview. As always, all images are used with permission, and you can read this in English and Spanish.

So, without further ado, let's start!

Hi there! Thank you for accepting the interview! Can you introduce yourself?
Hi hi~~ My name is Marisa, I’ve been running Atelier Meringue for three years now, and have been enjoying crafting for dolls every step of the way. My background was in fashion and sewing, and while I started off with simple clothing for dolls, my business morphed into solely wigs. I find wig making the most fun!
¡Hola!

How did you find out about BJDs? Did you started collecting right away?
I first saw BJDs at a convention in 2014. My heart fell for the size and detail of SDs and I had eyes for no other for a year! In 2015 I brought home my first doll, a Senior Delf Karis, and though the doll is no longer with me, the character was reshelled and remains one of my favorites. It’s been downhill ever since (in the best way!).

And from there, how did you decide to work create wigs?
My first wig was just for me, and I never intended to begin making wigs for sale when I started. I wanted a messy bun, in a silver and lilac color, and I wanted it to look pulled up into the style. For My Doll came the closest in ready-made wigs, but it looked too perfect as a clip-on bun attached to a longer pixie cut. After researching types of wigs, alpaca came up as the fiber to go with! I posted photos of that first wig on Facebook, and it took off enough to gather some sales interest. At the time I wasn’t processing my own fiber, I was ordering through Navy Blue Navel for clean hair and custom colors. I couldn’t have continued as I have without her help at the beginning! What keeps me going is striving to get better at color saturation and smooth blends. I tend to limit a wig to two colors to keep in my skill set, but have been working on adding more complex dye jobs to my portfolio. I hope to add more options for my clients!

Do you have any favourite materials? And a workspace to share with us?
Semi permanent dyes for human hair make up most of my dye stash. These dyes are how I get the fun bright colors! They allow me to mix up many different shades, and also multi task while the hair processes. Human hair dye allows me to apply the dye, and continue other tasks while it processes. Fabric dyes have given me nice, even colors, but they’re much more time consuming due to the fact you must stir the hair around the thirty minutes to an hour, with the added preparation of hot water.

How do you work? Do you take commissions or offer a stock?
Currently I work solely on commission! It’s a great way to track what the current trends are in the doll world. It’s interesting because I do see a pattern within order periods of style or color. In the future I would like to offer more stock options but for now my plate is pretty full.
¿Cómo trabajas? ¿Por encargos o tienes un stock?
¡Actualmente sólo trabajo a pedido!

Among all the wigs or styles you made: do you have a personal favourite? And the most popular among your customers?
My current favorite is what I’ve privately dubbed the Ballpoint Pen wig, ahaha. The specific shade of blue fading from the roots reminds me of smeared blue pen ink in school, especially when washing the dye out. It also has one of my best cuts on the bangs, and it’s a fan favorite too!

Do you have a personal collection of dolls? Which one is your preferred BJD brand?
I do! Contrary to my shop feed which showcases mostly my Minifee, I collect SD sized dolls the most. Little Monica has been my long time favorite, though I have been focusing on Dust of Dolls and Peak’s Woods lately. The formula for my dolls would be chubby cheeks, button noses, pouty lips, and dreamy eyes, my friends know I’m weak for a half open eye! This photo is a little old, but shows my collection pretty out together compared to how they look right now! Between being wig models and preparing to move, my doll collection is a bit scattered at the moment.

What is your process of creating a wig? Do you work in batches or one by one?
It’s a little of both! To simplify the process, wig making would be cleaning the hair, dyeing/treating the hair, and constructing the wig. The task of washing enough hair for each order period takes place over a few weeks, to protect my wrists from aches. I do a lot of carpal tunnel stretches as preventative measures though! It’s not too difficult a task, just incredibly tedious. This takes the most time. As I process the hair I bundle it in appropriate weights for MSD and SD sized wigs. Next comes dyeing! Sometimes I receive batches of alpaca that it not so shiny, and so this hair becomes my test subject. Dye tests can take a lot of attempts but once the correct color is approved, I can apply it to those weighed bundles from the first step. The goal is to not dye too much or too little, for efficiency!
Once the hair is dyed, it’s ready for construction. With the number of orders I receive it’s safe to assume I’ve always got more wig caps in waiting once previous wigs are finished. This part I space over a week or two just so the adhesive sets up to withstand styling and shipping. I do work directly on the cap for a smooth finish, I find working with wefts leaves a bumpy feel when petting the wig.

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
I couldn’t be doing what I’m doing without the support from my friends and customers, so thank you for sticking with me! It can be difficult to keep up inspiration alone, all the ideas and orders I receive keep me creating a range of different hairstyles. I love seeing what everyone designs for their own doll collection.

  1. Thanks for a great interview with an artist with whom I was unfamiliar and whose work I find I love. I'm not clear on whether she makes her own wig caps or glues the hair directly to a purchased silicone wig cap. Making a wig cap is messy and the results are very bumpy. Gluing wefts to something like that only makes it worse. I love her use of color: her gradations from one color to another are just beautiful.
